To all/whom it may concern:
Be itknownthat l, ARTHUR W. HEALEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the countyof Stutsman and yState of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vashing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in washingv apparatus and it is an objectl of .the invention to provide an apparatus ofl this general character wherein pressure is imposed upon the articles to be cleansed from opposite sides and wherein the pressure at one side is mechanical and the pressure at the opposite side is afforded by steam pressure.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character including' a pounder head mounted for reciprocal movement and coacting with the upper part of the articles to be cleansed, whereby steam is directed upwardly towardfthe pounder head whereby the cleansing` operation is materially facilitated.
It is also an object of the inventionto provide a novel and-improved apparatus of this general character including a container and mechanical means coacting therewith for operating' upon the articles placed within the container and wherein said mechanicall means is so mounted as to be moved away from the container so that access may be had therein.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved apparatus whereby certain important advantages `are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating a washing apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of myinvention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in front elevation and partly in section of the apparatus as herein disclosed;
Fig. 3 is a view in top plan with parts in section vof the apparatus as herein set forth, of disclosure;
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken certain of the parts being omitted for clarity substantially on the line /l-t of Fig. l;
Fig. 5 is a view partly inelevation and partly in section illustrating an operative connection with one of the pounder heads as herein included; and
Fig. 6 is a view, enlarged, in elevation, illustrating certain details of `my invention as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, C denotes a container or tub of predetermined dimensions and configuration and tical arms 2 of the brackets B are tied or connected by the transversely disposed bars i whereby it will be perceived that the brackets B will be caused to move in unison and in the same general direction relative to the uprights l. The horizontal arms 5 of the brackets B are provided with the upstanding bearings 6 in which are Arotatably mounted the crank shafts 7, adjacent ends of said shafts 7 having fixed thereto the gears 8 in mesh with an interposed gear 9 mounted upon a shaft l0 rotatably supported by the horizontal arm 5 of one of the brackets B, said shaft 10 being adapted to be rotated in any desired manner, but more particularly as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
One of the bars li, preferably the lowermost bar, is provided with the forwardly directed arms 11 in predetermined spaced relation and substantially in parallelism, each of said arms 1l being provided with the vertically directed'bearings 12 and through each of said bearings l2 is directed the tubular shank 14 of a pounder head V, said pounder head V being preferably cone shape in form and of a conventional construction.
Telescopically engaged with each of the Shanks 14 is a rod 15 provided with the laterally directed finger or pin 16 disposed through a slot 17 arranged longitudinally of the shank 14, whereby it will be perceived that the rod 15 and the shank 14 are capable of limited independent Yrelative movement.
In order to normally maintain the shank 14 perceived that upon rotation of a shaft 7 the requisite reciprocation will be imparted to the pounder head V, the stroke of the pounder head being determinedby the throw of the crank 20. By having the rod 15 and the tubular shank 14 capable of relative independent movement, it'will be perceived that the requisite compression may be had upon the articles within the container or tub C without interfering with the oscillation of the pitman 19.
In vcommunication with the interior of the container or tub C through the bottom thereof and directly beneath each of the pounder heads V, is the pipe 21 leading from a suitable source of steam supply independent of the container CV and whereby it will be perceived that a continuous upward pressure will be imparted upon the articles to be cleansed from below and inv direct alinement with the pressure imparted upon the articles to be cleansed. In addition, the steam serves to cause the cleansing fluid to thoroughly and effectively perme-l time.
As herein disclosed, the shaft 10 *hereinbefore referred to, has affixed to its outer extremity a pulley 22 around which passes vshaft 25 may be manually rotated. I-Iowever, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this particular means for rotating the pulley 24, as the same may be .engaged from the clutch member 28.

The shaft 25 has affixed thereto a clutch member 28 adapted to coact with the clutch face 29 of the drum 30 fixed upon the shaft 25 to rotate therewith, but capable of movement longitudinally thereofiso that the clutch face 29 of the drum 30 `may be dis- As herein disclosed, the clutch facev 29 of the drum 30- is disengaged from the clutch member 28- by the operating member coacting with the vdrum 30 in a conventionalmanner. It is also to be notedthat the clutch face 29 of the drum 30 is automatically moved into engagement with the clutch member 28 by the expansible member 32 herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring interposed between an Vvend of the drum 30 anda bearing 26, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. Suitably secured tothe drum 30 and adapted to be wound therearound, is the iexible member 33 lwhich extends upwardly and over a guide pulley 34 suitably supported at a predetermined point above the shafts 7 and then downwardly and operatively engaged, as at 35, with the upper brace bar 4. By this arrangement it will be perceived that when it is desired to apply articles to be cleansed withinthe container or tub C, orfor any other purpose, itis only necessary to permit fthe clutch face 29 of the drum 30 to interlock with the'clutch member 28, whereupon the rotation of the shaft 25 will so wind the flexible member 33 about the drum 30 as to lift or move upwardly the brackets B and thus withdraw the pounder heads V from within the container or tub C a suiiicient distance thereabove asto offer no obstruction to the insertion of the articles to be cleansed within the container or tub C or for any other purpose which may be desired. Itis also to be understood that after the brackets B have been elevated the desired height, the rotation of the shaft 25 is discontinued.
In order to hold the shaft 25 against retrograde movement, which would otherwise permit the pounder heads V to be lowered within the container orvtub C, I 4provide the shaft 25 with a conventional ratchet 36 with whichcoacts a pawl 37 pivotally supported by anadjacent bearing 26, as is particularly illustrated-in detail iny Fig. 6. In this figure it is to be observedthat the dog or pawl 37 is provided with an upstanding tail 38 whereby the pawlor dog 37 may be disengaged from the ratchet 36 when it is desired to return the pounder heads V within the container or tub-C.
From i the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invene tion is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my 3 invention in practice.
I claim: A Washing apparatus comprising a con'- tainer, a plurality of pounder heads mounted for reciprocation in a vertical path relative to and above the bottom of the container7 and a pipe coacting with each of the pounder heads and leading from a source of fluid supply under pressure and in communication with the container through the bottom thereof at a point below the axial center of the pounder head, the space between the bottom of the container and the pounder heads being unobstructed.
