One object of my invention is to provide a. novel form of supporting structure and knife carrier for use in connection with pile cutting mechanism such as that described and claimed in my U. S. Patent No. 1,161,710, Nov. 23, 1915, the construction and arrangement being such as to provide a stili-'er supporting bar without increasing or materially changing the disposition of the metal employed. Another object of the invention is to so mount the carriage-supporting guide or slide bar that lint or dust cannot collect upon it.
It is further desired to so construct the knife carrier that there shall be no lost motion between it and its supporting bar nor any rebound at either end of its stroke, the invention contemplating a constantly acting brake for accomplishing this end which shall permit the loom on which the invention is used being operated at a considerably hibgher speed than would otherwise be possi le.
These objects and other advantageous ends I secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

ln the above drawings 1 represents portions of the main frame of a loom having a take-up roll 2 for the fabric a'. As described in my application above referred to, this fabric is woven upon pile wires and is immediately cut to form the tufts characterizing a certain class of rugs or carpets, the cutting apparatus preferably including a knife blade 3 supported upon a carriage or carrier 4.- slidable transversely of said fabric upon a rigidlj7 supported horizontal bar 5.
According to the present invention this bar is cf square section and is clamped in standards or brackets 6 on the frame so that one of its sharp edges is uppermost, its various sides lying in planes at angles of d50 to the horizontal.
The carriage itself consists of a pair of blocks 7 and 8 respectively'formed with lon gitudinally extending recesses of triangular section in their adjacent faces, into which the bar 5 is designed to closely fit. For holding these blocks together upon the bar I provide four bolts 9 extending' through them adjacent their corners and each having a spring 10 causing said blocks to exert friction upon said bar. Each spring preferably acts in a cavity of the block, between a shoulder at the bottom of said cavity and the head of its bolt 9, which passes completely through the second block 7 and has a nut 11 screwed on its extremity. As a consequence of this arrangement the two blocks are yieldingly pressed against the inclined surfaces ofV the bar 5 and the strength of the springs is such that while the carriage may be moved on said bar by power applied through a cable 12, its motion stops as soon as the moving force ceases. ln other words, the friction between the blocks 7 and 8 and the bar is such that the carriage will not drift nor rebound at the ends 4of its path of movement.
F or actuating the carriage I provide a cable 12 mounted upon pulleys of which one is illustrated at 13, and drive this cable so as to reciprocate the carriage, from a suitable source of power forming no part of this invention. For connecting the cable to the carriage I provide a clamping plate 14 having a rib 15 extending along one edge and provided with a groove of V-shaped section formed in a portion of its ribbed face adjacent that edge distant from said rib. Said plate is caused to clamp the cable 12 to the block 7 by means of a pair of bolts 16 which confine it between the upper face of said block and the sides of the V-shaped groove. rlhe knife 3 is mounted to extend downwardly from a secondary knife carriage 17 which is mounted on tubular guides 18 projecting from the outer side of the block 8.
With the above described arrangement of parts not only do the sloping upper sides of the bar permit lint or dust to freely fall off without collecting; but by reason of its being mounted in the bracket G with its greatest transverse dimension vertical, said bar is found to be materially stiffer than when supported as shown in my application above referred to, with its sides respectively vertical and horizontal. Further it is possible with the carriage braking device above illustrated to operate the loom at considerably higher speed than has hitherto been allowable, in view of the elimination of the rebounding of said carriage at the ends f of its path of movement.

5. The combination of an elongated supporting bar mounted with one of vits longitudinal edges uppermost; two blocks having triangular grooves 'in `theiradjacent faces for the reception of said bar; bolts connecting the blocks above and below thefbar;
means for yieldingly drawing said blocks together; and a pile knife carried /by the blocks.

The combination of an elongated supff porting bar; two blocks slidably fitting said bar; headed bolts connecting the blocks; a spring operative on each bolt between the head thereof and one of the blocks for yieldingly drawing Vsaid blocks into frictional engagement with the rod; with a vpile knife carried by the blocks.
7. The combination in a loo1n`of an elongated bar supported at its ends and extending across the machine; a knife carriage slidable on said bar; and a constantly acting braking device for the carriage including means for automatically takingup lost motion between the bar and said carriage.
