To all 'whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, MILEs D. BRUGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thedford, in the county of Thomas, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Lift for Pump-Pipes or Pump-Rods; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The nvention relates to a device to be used for removal of pump pipes or pump rods from wells, so that new washers may be appled or other necessary work done upon them.
The principal object is to provide a lever operated frame for elevati'ng the pipe or rod and a holding' frame for securing either in the position in which t has been raised when the lever operated frame is released to secure a new grip.
A further object is to provide a vise member, so that the pipe may be secured against turning, the vise member permitting the connecting lengths of pipe to be uncoupled as they are raised from the well.
A still further object is to provide, in

The objects set forth are accomplished by the specific structure shown in the drawings, which structure constitutes one embodiment of the nvention. Practice, howsuch other embodiments do not depart from the spirit of the appended claims.
Other objects than those set forth will be made apparent in the description of .the various parts of the invention. Should the drawings and specification difi'er to the extent of having' the one set forth some structure that is not fully treated by the other, the right to such structure is claimed, unless the structure is old and admitted so to be.
A uniform system of designating the various parts of the invention obtains in all of the several fig'ures ofthe drawings, wherein:

The numeral 1 represents a pump head from which the pipe 2 is being' rased, a coupling` 3 being' shown attaching adjacent lengths of pipe together. A strap 4: is used for attachment to the pump head. This strap is circular in plan and, being open on one side, has its two free ends 6 turned outwardly in a radial direction, a bolt 7 passing,` through the two ends 6 and a nut S threadingz,` on to this bolt and drawing' the ends 6 together to secure the strap 4 on the pump head. On the diametrically opposite side from the ends 6, the strap 4- has a radial integral projecton 5 which is slotted and receives in this slot the standard 9, suitable rivets`10 securing the standard and the strap 4 together.
Designed to set on top of the pump head is the holding-frame. This frame comprises the side plates 11 and 12 which are united by a cap plate 13, screws 14a passing` through the can plate and threaded into both plates 11 and 12. The cap plate 13 has a central hole of large enough diameter to permit the passag'e through it of the largest pipe coupling Within the capacity of the device, the plates 11 and. 12 having their inner sides hollowed out centrally directly below this hole in the plate 13. Jaws 14 are pivotally supported between plates 11 and 12 on the studs 15 which are firmly fixed in both the plates 11 and 12. At the free end of each jaw 14. an angle plate 16 is attached, bolts 17 with their nuts 18 effecting the attachment. Eye bolts 19 pass through the upturned ends of the angle plates 16 and have nuts 21 threaded on their shanks. Sprng's 20 are connected between the eye bolts 19 and the ears 22, which ears are integral projections of the cap plate 13. By raising the rear end of the jaws 14:, the springs 20 operate to keep the jaws in firm contact with the pipe that may be passing between them and these springs yield to permit the jaws 14 to spread when' Teeth are formed on. the pipe engaging ends of the jaws 14 and these teeth prevent the pipe Which is held between the jaws from dropping, the teeth engaging the pipe at points above the pivotal supports of the jaw. The holding frame and the standard 9 are rigidly connected together by bolts 23 which pass through the standard and thread into the plate 12.
Above the holding-frame, the standard 9 is offset, t'erminating at its top in the ears 24 formed by slotting the end. Between these ears the lever 25 is fulcrumed, the stud 26 fixed in the ears providing a pivot on which the lever- 25 can move. The lever 25 has a bifurcated end 27 which straddles the upper end of the eye bolt 28. This eye bolt 28 has an elongated eye 29 through which the stud 30 passes, the stud 30 being fixed centrally in the bifurcations of the end 27. Besides being attached to the lever 25, the eye bolt 28 is also connected to the b beam 31, entering a centrally formed rectangular aperture 32, near the bottom of which it engages pivotally a stud 33 that passes transversely through the beam 31.
Near either end of the beam 31, the stud bolts 34 are attached, the shanks 35 passing transversely through the beam and having nuts 36 threaded on to them. The shanks 37 of the stud bolts 34 are adapted to support the arms 38, so that the latter may be `.permitted to have pivotal movement thereon. At their extreme ends the shanks 37 support between them the vise beam 39,' spiral springs 40 surrounding the shanks and intervening between the arms 38 and the vise beam. Nuts 41 are threaded upon the shanks 37 on the outside of the vise beam. On its inner face and disposed centrally with reference to its length, the vise beam 39 has a Circular depression 42 with teeth formed therein Which enables the vise beam to firmly grip the pipe and screW down upon the latter.
Both the vise beam 39 and the arms 38 are adapted to slide freely and easily upon the shanks 37 of the stud bolts 34, so that, when a coupling (such as coupling 3) has reached a position where it is between the beam 31 and the vise beam 39, the vise beam 39 can be brought into firm contact with the coupling by screwing the nuts 41 down upon.

The beam 31 together with the arms 38, the jaws 43 and the plates 44 constitute the raising-frame. Studs 45 connect both plates 44 together and support between these plates (so as to allow them pivotal movement) the jaws 43 which in shape and in the manner of mounting are identical with jaws 14.
The plates 44 are curved in their Centers' to permit the passage between them of the pacity of thevv device.
The jaws 43 at their ends remote from the pivots 45 have the angle plates 47 attached Which angle plates are secured to the jaws by the bolts 48 and nuts 49. The jaws 43, in addition to their pivotal Connections 45, have lalso pivotal connections with the arms 38, these pivotal Connections being provided with the studs 50 Which are secured to the legs 46 of the forked ends of the arms 38, Which legs 46 straddle the jaws 43.
Near the extreme ends of the beam 31, the eyes 51 are connected, being secured to Springs 54 are connected with the eyes, 51
'couplingof the largest pipe Within the caand these springs also connect with the eyes 55, the threaded shanks of which `pass through holes in the angle plates 47 and have nuts 56 threaded on them.
It will be seen that the eye bolts 19 and 55 provide means for adjusting the tension of springs `20 and '54 respectively, the increasing of which will increase the grip of the jaws connected with these springs.
The device is utilized by attaching it to a pump' head so that the holding-frame, a,
rests on top 'of the pump head, when the strap 4 can be'secured to the pump head by tightening the nut 8 on its bolt 7, the holding-frame, a, and raising-frame, b, being, of course, placed over the pipe 2 before the attachment of the pump head is eifeeted. The springs 54 and 20 will then operate to cause the jaws 43 and 14 to grip the pipe 2. W'hen the lever 25 is depressed the frame, b, will be raised and, the jaws 43 firmly gripping the pipe, the pipe also will be raised, the jaws 14 yielding against the tension of the springs 20 to permit the pipe to slide between them. When the' lever 25 has been depressed to its lowest point it is raised, so that the raising-frame, b, may obtain a new grip on the pipe. The holding-frame, a, then holcls the pipe in the elevated position to which it was raised by the4 first depression of the lever 25, as any downward movement of the pipe tends to increase the grip of the aws 14 upon it. While the holdingframe, a, secures the pipe against dropping, the jaws 43 of the raising-frame, b, yield (when the lever 25 is ,being raised) as the jaws 14 previously did when the pipe was being raised. y l
VVhen the pipe 2 can be raised from the well a distance equal to one of its connecting lengths, and the coupling 3 which eonneets this length to the rest of the pipe `has reached a point where it is between, the beam 31 and vise beam 39, the vise beam is made to grip the coupling by serewing down the nuts 41. That length of pipe abovethe coupling can then be disengaged therefrom. The nuts .41
Operating to press the vise beam 39 away from the coupling, whereupon the raisingframe, Z), can then be operated to lift the pipe a distance equal to another of its connecting lengths.
In lowering the pipe back into the Well after the necessary repairs have been made, the jaws 14 are rendered inactive (by loosening the nuts 21) during the period when the pipe is being lowered. The nuts 21 are then tightened up causing the jaws 14 to grip the pipe, while the jaws 43 of the frame, b, are released from their grip to obtain a grip on the pipe at a higher point. When the pipe,
is being lowered into the well the various lengths are assembled with the ad of the vise beam 39, the couplings being held between it and the beam 31 just as they Were held When the several lengths Were disconnected.
What is claimed is:
1. In a pump lift, a holding frame adapted to rest upon the pump head, Whereby said frame may swvel around the pump pipe, said frame having a standard rising upwardly therefrom, a lever pivoted on the upper end of the standard, a link loosely pivoted to one end of the lever, a trans! versely disposed beam having a channeled outV recess midway its ends to receive the lower end of said link, means to secure the link in said recess, the ends of said beam having laterally extending bolts, arms pivoted upon said bolts, jaws having their outer end portions pivotally connected to the lower ends of the arms and having exten sions, a pair of plates connected together, one upon each side of the pipe and having means to pivotally support the inner ends of said jaws, spring connections connecting the ends of the beam and said extensions of said jaw, a vise beam having its ends slidable on the lateral bolts, springs between the ends of the vise beam and said arms, and means threaded on said lateral bolts for forcing the vise beam toward the pipe, said vise beam having teeth, adapted to engage the pipe when the vise beam is forced toward the same, whereby the pipe may be turned.
2. In a pump lift, a holding frame adapted to rest upon the pump head, said holding frame having spring` tensioned jaws at its lower portion to intermittently grip the pipe, said holding frame having a standard rising upwardly therefrom, a lever pivoted on the standard, a beam having a central link connection to the lever, the ends of the beam having lateral bolts, arms pivotally mounted on said bolt, a vise beam slidably supported upon said bolts, a pair of plates connected together and disposed opposite each other on diametrically opposite sides of the pipe, a. pair of jaws having their outer ends pivotally connected to the' lower ends of the arms and their inner ends pivotally connected between the plates, whereby the last named jaws may grip the pipe alternately with the firstnamed jaw, the outer pivoted ends of the last named jaws having extensions, and spring means connecting said extensions and the outer ends of said beam to hold the last named jaws in firm contact with the pipe.
