My object has been to provide a tag having reinforcing material so attached to the g material forming the body of the tag, that it is practically impossible to separate the` reinforcing material from the body of the tag. The strength and durability of the tag is thus limited, not alone to the tensile strength of the material of the body ofthe tag, but to the combined strength of the reinforcing material and the body of the tag.
Another object is to provide a tag having` the thickness of the reinforcing material apparent on one surface of the tag only, `where the tag has a multi-ply body, leaving lthe other surface fiat or smooth to facilitate its inscription.
Another' object is to provide an arrangement of the reinforcing material so as to protect the longitudinal edges of the tag,`
and thus add strength and durability.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown and described a tag having a multi-ply body portion with a flat metal reinforcing strip through its approximate longitudinal center and rounded reinforcing material along the sides, but I do not limit myself to the precise shape, location or kind of reinforcing material herein shown and described, nor to the method of attaching the same to the tag material, nor
to atag having a multi-ply body portion.
It is apparent that it is not necessary to have the reinforcing material of fiat metallic strips, but a wire with roughened or serrated surface would answer the purpose as well in some cases; in that event the reinforcing material, such as wire, could extend beyond the body of the tag for attaching purposes and the roughened or serrated surface would provide an eicient bond when the plies of material are cemented together under heavy pressure, that `would be difficult if not impossible to obtain in any other way.
I accomplish these objects in the manner hereinafter specied.

The modiiied form of construction shown in Fig. 3 is that of a tag formed of two distinct layers or plies of tag material with the side reinforcing material set in toward the longitudinal center of the tag.
2 is the smooth face or fiat upper layer of tag material which is adapted for such inscription as it may be desired to place upon the tag.
3 is the under face or layer of tag material which may be formed as hereinbefore stated by folding the tu g material back upon itself. The two layers of material thus formed may be cemented together by any well known adhesive.
4t is a strip of reinforcing material, pref erably metallic between the layers of tag material. l
5, 5 are strands of reinforcing material also between the layers of tag material. These latter may be of metal suoli as wire, or may be composed of string or tape or may be entirely eliminated.
As shown in my preferred form of construction, Figs. l, 2 and 4f, thes(`l strands 5, 5 are placed substantially along the longitudinal edges of the tag where the tag material is creased to fold it back upon itself.
Vhen the layers of tag material are pressed together after the insertion of the reinforcing material and the adhesive, the several parts are pressed together in such manner as to force the reinforcing material toward one face of the tag only and, with the layer of'tag material on that side, to form the flanges as shown in Figs. 2 and Li.

and 5. vThese roughened" surfaces furnish an excellent hold for the adhesive and when -the layers oftagmatei'ial arev subjected to jpressure thepaper or otherfmaterialformythetag laterally. These strands are ,illustiated asA being wit-hout serrations, butfgdo not limit myself to the precise form o'f construction, shape or condition shown.
In order to secure a still moreperfect 'union of strip i lwith the body of the tag and to furnish an eyelet for the. purpose of attaching they tag' by wire, string or` otherwise to a packagegl provide one or more apertures '7 7.
In the drawings "l have shown two such apertures substantiallycircular in form, but
I do not limit myself to any precise number or shape or'location. An important feature of theinvention resides in the means 'by which the apertures are provided with round edges to prevent cutting the string and at the Sametime'providing means for additionally securing-the tag material and the reinforcing strip together. This is accomfplished by 'forming an eyelet from the reinforcing material the edges of which engagc the tag material.
These eyelets may be formed by punching Athe two'layers of the' tag material and the strengthening material 4, then by any welllrnown ymeans forcing the material 4 and .such portion ofthe tag material as maybe carried with it toward the surface ofthe tag and then turning the edges of the punched portion of the strip 4 back upon itself until it clenches itself and that'surface of the'tag'together. There is advantage in this'forni of construction as I am able thus to secure not only additional security in fastei'iing the material fl to the tag material but also from the fact that the aperture'is'provided with a round smooth edge for the string or other-means usedto fasten the tag to an article.
It will be observed that one or more of the eyelets in the preferred form of-the invention as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, and t, engage a portion of each of the abutting edges of thel tag material indicated by the dotted line l. vThis construction provides means for preventing either of the redges which vmight `become loosened, from springing away :from
the reinforcing material.
