To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY T. BAR'rLnTr, loi-1N BAmLn'r'r, and JEssii T. ROBINSON, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Montgomery, in the county of h/lontgomery and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
@ur invention relates to a cabinet or container forvholding a stack of bank checks, deposit slips, sheets of writing paper, or slips of' material which will be delivered one at a time for use by the manipulation of a feed mechanism, the object of the invention being to avoid by this seratim delivery of the articles the loss and waste incident to the promiscuous use or removal of such articles by customers and others.
Our invention is more particularly intended as an apparatus for preventing` the waste of counter-checks and deposit slips which at present are left exposed on the bank counters in large quantities, generally in pads, and which are appropriated by the customers of the banks and others for use as scratch pads or for other purposes foreign lo the business of the institution providing them. 1We have conceived that, if a simple and inexpensive apparatus can be provided which is attractive in appearance and can be conveniently placed upon the counters and which must be operated each time a slip, check or the like is desired, a large percentage of this waste will be obviated and to this end we have designed a cabinet adapted to receive and hold a stack of slips or blank checks. Adjustable mechanism is provided to hold the stack of slips in position before the delivery chute and the deliv- .ery mechanism is provided and adapted to be equally effective, regardless of the height cf the stack of slips, to deliver them seriatz'm in position to be grasped and drawn out by the user.
Our invention comprises many novel details of construction, the nature and purposes of which will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings which are intended to illustrate only the preferred embodiment of our invention and in Figure 1 shows the complete apparatus in perspective with the top part of the cabinet shown in dotted lines. i

lThe apparatus, as illustrated, comprises a suitable base or pedestal 10 preferably in the form of a box open below and supported by soft pads 11 to protect the counter or desk upon which the apparatus is placed. The base comprises a flat top or platform 12 which receives the stack of articles 13, such as checks, depositslips and the like. Near the back end of the platform 12 and along its center line is a series of screw threaded holes le adapted to receive the lower threaded end of a stop or post 15 and permitting the post to be adjusted lengthwise of the platform to accommodate varying lengths of stacked slips and hold their forward ends adjacent to an upwardly inclined delivery plate 16 leading to a feed slot 17 in the front end 18 of the top of the apparatus. This plate 1G is movable with the top and when in operating position extends from below the platform level to and beyond the slot 17, forming the bottom of the latter.
The platform near its forward end is provided with a pair of guide posts 19 which project through arcuate slots 20 at each side and are riveted or made fast to the forward ends of bars 21, which extend diagonally across under the platform and have their central lapping portions pivotally connected to the platform by a rivet or bearing stud 22. At their rear ends each bar 21 carries an upright post 23 which projects up through a slot 2li on each side of the platform.v The several slots are struck on arcs from the bearing@ and elongated to permit the posts of each pair to be swung toward and from each other and thus vary the spacing between them to accommodate different widths of checks, slips or like articles, The right hand post 23 at its upper end is reduced to form a vertical bearing pin upon which a rocker arm 26 is journaled and held in place by a top washer 27 riveted on the bearing pin. The rocker arm 26 is free to swing horizontally and at its outer end carries a straight presser rod 28 which projects downwardly at a slight outward angle (see'Fig. 5) through the adjacent platform slot 24C. A sleeve 29 of rubber or like frictional material is fitted over the presser rod 28 and a similar sleeve 30 is mounted on the left hand post 23. A coil spring 31 engages the presser rod 28 and is connected to the adjacent post 23 and tends to swing the rod about the post and press it against the side edges o f the stack of slips, it being noted that its angular disposition causes it to exert its friction pressure upon the upper slips only of the stack, and that this action is true regardless of the height of the stack. Links 32 are connected to the rear ends of the bars 21 and are in turn connected to a slide pin 33 working in a longitudinal guide 34 in the under side of the platform. The bar 21, adjacent to the right hand post 19, is formed with a lateral extension 35 in which is journaled a swivel block 36 having a threaded hole therethrough to receive the threaded end of an adjusting screw 37. This screw has fast on its outer end a plunger 38 which works in a socket 39 formed in a boss t() in the side of the pedestal. A coil spring 411 surrounds the screw bearing at one end against the boss and at its other end against a collar 42. The spring urges the bars through their lazy-tong connections to press the several posts against the stack of slips and the plunger, by engaging the inner wall of the socket, serves to limit the inward spring-pressed movement of the posts. By turningthe screw the pairs of posts can be set nearer or farther apart without disturbing the action of the spring and stop thereon.
At the rear end of the platform is a bracket .43 having forwardly extending end flanges through which passes a bearing pin 411.- The metallic casing forming the top of the cabinet is journaled at its rear end on the ends of the pins 44 and can be adapted to be opened up to a vertical position so as to fully expose the platform. This top, at its forward end, carries the parts 16,17 and 1S and also carries a latch 46 which is adapted to. engage a latch pin 47 below the platform, 'a spring 4:71L pressing the latch toward its pin engaging position and a slot 48 infthe platform being provided to permit the latch to project down therethroughand engage the pin. The outer end` of the latch `projects through the guide plate 16 in `convenient position to be pressed by the hand when in position to lift the top.
A `curved operating `lever 49 isy mounted at one side of the,apparatusland'at its forwardendcarries'a handle 50 which projects through a slotted guide 51 near the Vtop of the apparatus, and at the other end the lever is pivotally connected to a bow lever 52, the side members of which are pivotally connected by pins 53 to the sides ofthe top and at their upper ends are connected `by a cross arm 54. A bar 55 is pivotally connected to the center of the cross arm 5a and extends forward 0f the machine, having its forward end pivotally connected to a pin 56 on a` rocker arm 57 mounted to rock on a. bearing 58 onthe side of the top. Coil springs 59 hold the rocker arms retracted and the handle at the rear end of the slot 51. At the center of the arm 55 is an enlargement carrying journal pins disposed vin vertical alinement and having mounted thereon a kpair of parallel kbars 60, which bars at their forward ends are pivotally connected'to a pusher plate 61 having its main body portion twisted to lie ,in a transverse plane and covered with a rubber or friction pad 62. A coil spring 63 mounted on the bar 55 engages and depresses the bars 60,.thus urging the .pusherplate toward the pad sheets. The top15 of the apparatus has a glass cover 64 which exposes to view the stack of slips to be distributed.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: Assuming that a stack of counterchecks are to be handled, the top 45 .is raised, the left hand posts 19 and 23 are grasped and drawn together by which action all of the posts are spaced apart and thechecks can be placed between the posts on the platform 12. The post 15 is adjusted to the proper holeV to `bring the forward ends of the 'checks near enough to the feed slot 17 to be projected therethrough by the pusher plate. By turning the screw 37 the relative adjustment of `the posts can be adapted to the size of the checks, the posts 19 serving preferably merely as guides while the presser rod 28 and the opposite post 23 between them frictionally engage the side edges of the stack of checks sufficiently to resist their outward `movement. The top 15 is now lowered and in doing so the pusher plate 62 engages thetop check of the stack. As the handle 50 is drawn forward it rocks the arms 52 and 57 forward, carrying with them the bar 55 and moving forward with the bar ythe parallel bars 6() and the pusher pad 62, which frietionally engages, and in moving from its full line to dotted line position, Fig. 2, `feeds forward a check in position to be grasped and drawn out by the operator. Upon releasing the handle thefsprings 59 return the pusher mechanism to retracted position, as shown in full'lines F ig. 2. As the stack is lowered the spring 31 swings the presser rod 2S about its supporting post 23 and causes `the inclined surface of the former to press always with its greatest force yon the upper sheets. 1n likelmanner the spring 63 and the weight of the pusher, cause the latter to follow down, as the stack diminishes, and to work as eifectivelyto feed the first as the last article. Either the weight or the spring may be relied upon.
The apparatus is especiallydesigned for feeding checks, slips and the like scrz'atz'm, and obviously it may be modified in design and construction to handle tickets, envelops, writing paper, and like articles. It will also be understood that various modifications may be made in the apparatus which we have attempted to describe only in what we now regard as its preferred embodiment.

An apparatus of the character described comprising a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, guides on the platform, clamping members adapted to engage the side edges of, and frictionally hold between them, the articles to be fed, in combination with means for feeding the articles seratz'm.

An apparatus of the character described comprising a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, guides for the articles, spring-pressed means to engage and press against the side edges of the articles, said means comprising an inclined member disposed to exert its maximum pressure on the upper articles, and means for feeding the articles seratz'm.
3; An apparatus of the character described comprising a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, adjustable guides for the articles on the platform, hinged clamping rods projecting below the platform, spring means adapted to press saidrods against the sides of the articles to be fed, and means to feed said articles scrz'atz'm, substantially as described. i

In an apparatus of the character described, a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, adjustable guides mounted on the platform,clamping rods projecting down through the platform, swinging arms which carry said clamping rods, a tension spring adapted to press said rods against the sides of the articles to be fed, and means for feeding said articles scr/'azz'm.

In an apparatus of the character described, a platform adapted to hold the ar-` ticles` to be fed, guides for the articles, means to frictionally engage and press against the side edges of the articles, means to feed the articles scrzctz'm, comprisinoa a handle, a rcciprocable member movzible y thereby, and a pusher depending from said member and adapted to frictionally engage the articles Scafati/1n, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the character described, a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, guides for the articles, means to frictionally engage the side edges of the articles, means to feed the articles seriali/im, comprising a hand lever, a reciprocable member movable thereby, and a springpressed pusher `depending from said member and adapted to frictionally engage the articles scrazz'm, substantially as described.

In an apparatus of the character described, a platform having guides for the articles to be fed, a hand lever, a reciprocable member movable with the lever, parallel arms journaled to said member, and a pusher journaled to the ends of said arms and adapted to frictionally engage the articles serial/Lm.

An apparatus of the character described comprising a platform adapted to hold the articles to be fed, guides for the articles, spring-pressed means to engage and press against the side edges of the articles, s aid means comprising a spring-pressed swinging friction member which is bodily movable toward the stack of articles and inclined, to engage the upper in advance of the lower articles, and means for feeding the articles serz'atz'm.

In an apparatus of the character described, a platform adapted to support a stack of the articles to be delivered, guide means for the articles, horizontally movable swinging .arms disposed below the articles, clamp members carried by said arms and adapted to frictionally engage the side edges of the articles, spring means to press said members together, and means to feed the articles caritativa. 1
