TAMPING DEVICE.
vSpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 11, 1917.
Application led February 21, 1916. Serial No. 79,705.
l f'to provide a tamping device particularly adapted for positioning explosive charges in connection with coal mining, etc., Vand in which there 1s provided areceptacle assofor containing packing clay or similar material toV enable the device to be Voperated .by a single persom A further object of the invention is to provide a tamping device in which there is vprovided 'a receptacle to contain clay or other packing material and in which the receptacle is provided with a valve-controlled,
trolled by the sliding movement of the plunger or tamping bar.
With these general objects in viewand others that will appear as the nature oflthe j inventionlisbetter understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination andvarrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the acicompanying drawings, and then claimed.
Vapplication and in which like designating Y.
In the drawings forming a part of this Ycharacters refer to .corresponding parts .throughout the` several views tamping device inl operativey position in a coal or rock wall.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the i' device removed from the wall. v A
Fig. 3 is a top, plan view of the same showing the slidingvalve in open position. Fig. lA is a vertical cross-sectional view taken centrallythrough the clay receptacle and adjacent `tube portion.
the clamping device for positioning the same in a wall opening.

passage-way which is` automatically con-V F ig.l is aside elevational view, partly broken away, of the blasting needle. Y
In blasting, as in coal mining 0r other forms thereof, the placing of an explosive charge has usually required two persons, one to do the tamping vor packing of the Y filling clay or the like in the wall opening while the other person usually performs the duty of throwing the packing 'material into With the present invention, the packing of an explosive chargemay be accomplished by one person, such as positioning the blasting needle, the feedingA of the packing material and the tamping operation. -The present invention includes a tubularvmember carrying an expansible col-y lar orl sleeve that is adapted to be ositioned in a drilled opening in a coalban or other walluand adapted to be expanded so as to hold the tubular` member in the desired po-V sition. A lpacking 'material receptacle is associated with the tubular member and is provided withv a valve-controlled passageway forming communication therewith. A tamping rod or bar is slidably positioned in the tubular memberand has the enlarged head thereof extending into the wall opening, and by reciprocating the tamping bar,
and drawingthe same rearwardly to the desired position, the controlling valve for the packing material receptacle may be opened to permit the desired amount of packing material to fall into the tube to be carried forward by the tamping bar, and during such forward movement, the valve is automatically closed.
Referring more in detail totheaccompanying drawing, the reference numeral 10 Figurey 1 is a side elevational vlew of the designates atube that is preferably` cylindrical in cross-section, the same beingopen ateach end to permit the ready insertion l f ears 13 that receive an adjusting screw 14 Fig." 5 is an end elevational view showing that may be operatedfto cause the clamping members 12 to be moved relative to the tubular member 10.
A packing material receptacle 15 is centrallyY carried by the tube 10 and the bottom wall thereof is provided with an .opening 16 that forms communication between the rcceptacle 15 and the tube V10. The communi 1in thetainping head groove23fan`djmoved cating opening 16 is controlled by thesldllg valve member 17 in theiormof an elongated rectangular plate, one end "of the valveV 17 passingbetween the bottom of the receptacle and the tube 10 as Vshown in Figs-2'and'fv 4to, be receivedbetween the guidefianges 18 formed'at the'side walls ofthe opening; Stop pins are carried by the innerend oi the` valvev 17 which will limit the sliding move- `Inent thereof inl opposite directions? The outer end ofthe val-ve plate 17 is angularly bent as at 19 to the form vbest 4shown in'Figs. -2 a-nd 6, while aV swinging clasp 20 is hinged at one end .to one side'oi' the bent end 19 with So'as tovprovide a Supportingzgfuide and lock ltheV other end'V detachably connected thereto withy any'suitable form of handle'end as may side thereof. The"blasting needle A-24fli'sf'in the form of i an elongated- Wire lmemberthat carriesthe handle 25. "il/Vith the tamp'i'ng bar 21 inV operative position"V as 'wshownin Figs. 2 and`3,by withdrawing-thesame to the `position shown, `the fhead '20 will engage the bent end19 of the sliding valveplate 17V and withdraw the same to uncover Ythe :valve opening 16 as shown more clearly in Fig. 3,
and in this position, the springs 26 secured at one end to dependingy pins 27Aon' thereceptacle 15 and atl-their other end `todep'endin'gfpins 2S'on`the'outer1end of thevalve platefare placed under tensionso that when `'the tamping? bar ,moves orwa'rdly, thesaid springs will'return the valveplate'17 Vto ya position to' 'close the receptacle opening 16.7l
' AfIn assembling the parts, the' swinging 4 clasp' 2 0may be moved on its hinge point to permit the head 22 of the'tamping bar'tofbe inserted in the open outerend of the' tube 10.
The blasting needle 24C, may thenbe inserted interne-mbe Aio `thedesireddiscanc V`A Vcoal orfrock bank A shownV inFigjLl "pro- 'vided'y with a drilled opening Bfinfwhicli is placed an. explosive charge C; The clamping i members 'k12 are drew@ im@ ClOSe 'relationl' Yship *withtlieltube 1() vby the'radjustingy screw 14 and"` the' clamping end ofthe tube is` then positionedwithin" the drilled opening In 555 -vthis position',V "the adjusting screw 14)' may be operated to cause-the clamping members -12 tov4 expand-to `frictionallyengage the"l side walls of the opening and securely "hold the' i' packing material receptacle n15` inrupright position as shown in FigL The packing material,Dshownfwithin the receptacle 15 in Fig. '1 'is fed into the tube-10 whenthe taiping'bar 21 ismoved outwardly andthe rear'end of the head 22 caused to engage the angular-ly bentvend 19 fof the'slidingtvalve ,plate;17,y therebyV the 17 to uncover .thevalve opening 16 and permit the f i contents of the receptacle l5 to descend into v-thetube 10. When so moved rearwardly, the springs 26 are placed under tension and .upon a forward or inward movement of. the tamping bar, the packing material within the tube is :movefdigfrwardly and the springs 26 automatically close the valve opening 16.
