JOHN il'. MACKAY, OF LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA.
NUT-LOCK.
Lasagna.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, JOI-IN J. MAGKAY, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Lake Charles, in the parish of Galcasieu and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut- Locks, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the ac-` Y Still a further object of this invention is in the production of a biiurcated portion upon one end of a key which bifurcated portion is provided with a beveled outer face Vso as to lie flush with the corresponding 'ace of the nut.
'VVith these and other objects in view, this invention consists of' certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully de- Bo scribed and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bolt and nut showing the device in operation.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 ci Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 oi" Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the hey used in connection with this device. 4@ Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that 1 designates the bolt which is provided with the threaded portion 2 which is adapted to receive the nut 3. The nut 3 is provided with the transverse opening 4 which extends wholly within the body of the nut as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
to By referring to F ig. 3, it will he seen that this opening is adapted to receive the key 5 in such a manner that the threaded portion 2 will bite into said key so as to prevent the nut from unscrewing on the threaded portion.
By referring to Fig. 4, it will be seen- 'that Speccatonof Letters Patent.
Patent-eri sept. 4, rait.
Application led December 22, 1916. Serial No.7138,422.
the key used in connection with this device is provided with the bifurcated end portions (i and 7. rlhe end portion 7 is bifurcated so as to forni the slot 8 and the end (i is bifurcated so as to forni the slot 9. It will be seen by referring to the saine ligure that the end portion G is beveledI so that the same will lit iush with the face 8 of the nut 3 asis clearly shown in Fig. 2 and it will also be seen that this end is provided with the channel portions 10 within the slot 9. The purpose of these channels 10 is that when the key is inserted in the portions shown in Fig. 2 a. nail or other like implement maybe driven into the channel 10 in such a manner as to spread the slot su'tliciently because the end 6 will bind upon the inner face of the transverse opening 4. It will be seen that when this end 6 is in the described position, 'l
that it will eihciently prevent the accidental displacement of the key so that the same will not be easily knocked out but will not prevent the saine being driven out if so desired.
rEhe main purpose of the slots 8 and 9 is to allow the key to he easily inserted within the transverse opening 4. Bl referring to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that the slots are adapted to extend parallel with the iace 1l of the nut so that when the key is driven into the aperture the threaded portion 2 will go between the bifurcated portions, thereby making it easy for the threads to cut into the key'as is shown in Fig. 3. By having the threads cut into the key, it will he seen that the key may be removed from the opening 4 without injuring the threads so that the bolt may be used indefinitely.
From the above description, it will be seen that a nut lock has been produced which is provided with a key which will taugen tially engage the threaded portion of the nut in such a manner as to eiiiciently prevent the rotation of a nut and at the same time the key may he inserted or removed without substantially injuring the threaded portieri ci the holt. It will also he seen that a key has been provided with a construction which will allow the key to be sufficiently locked within the nut so as to prevent the accidental displacement of the said key.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a bolt, a nut carried upon said holt, a transverse opening provided Wholly Within the body of said nut, a key adapted to be inserted Within said nut, said key provided with slots at each of its ends, said slots adapted to eXtend parallel With the under face of said nut so as to allovv said key to be inserted Within said slot in such a manner that the threads Will easily out into said key. Y
2. In a device of the class described, the combination o a bolt, a nut carried upon said bolt, a transverse Opening provided Wholly Within the body or' said nut, a key -adapted to be inserted Within said nut, said key provided with slots at each of'its ends,
said slots adapted to extend `parallel with 15 the under face of said nut, one end of said Y key being beveled so as to t flush with the corresponding side of said nut, said end provided With a channel extending Within said slot whereby a pointed instrument may 20 be driven in said channel so as to spread said slot, thereby eiciently locking said Vkey Within said nut so as to lprevent the accidental displacement of the sanne.' Y Y In testimony whereof I'lnelllntoV aiX my 25 signature.
Y JOHN J. MCKAY.
