Be it known thatI, JAMES B. Enwanns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Richland and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Turning Off Crank-Pins and like Parts, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine for quickly turning off and truing up crank pins, and like parts.
The invention contemplates among other features, the provision of a machine of a simple character for use in truing up they bearing surfaces of crank pins and the like. To this end a machine is designed to accurately perform the work and the machine is so constructed and arranged that it can be operated by workmen or laborers who need not be especially skilled in machinery, to operate the machine.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constitutinga part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the work holding member.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a base 10 carrying an upright 11 terminating in a bearing 12, through which passes a tool bar 13 the forward end of which is formed with an enlarged head constituting a socket 14. The socket 14 is adapted to receive a bushing 15 into which one end of a crank pin 16 is threaded or otherwise fitted, it being thus apparent that the socket 14 can accommodate bushings having different interior diameters and whereby crank pins of dierent sizes can be used in connection with the machine. Supported on the bushings and encircling the same is a boxing 17, the inner end of the boxingbeing provided with a shoulder 18 which is adapted to engage the enlarged head of the tool bar and lock the same thereupon. Encircling the tool bar is a sleeve 19, the forward end-of the sleeve being carried by the boxing 17 while the rear end thereof is provided with a toothed wheel Specification of Letters Patent.

The toothed wheel 20 meshes withv a smaller toothed wheel 21 carried on a ysuitable spindle 22, the saidspindle being journaled on the upright and having one end tapered as at 23 to receive a suitable handle whereby, when rotation is imparted to the spindle, they toothed wheel 21 will be rotated, thus imparting rotation to the toothed wheel 20 and in that manner resulting in rotation of the sleeve 19, the boxing 17 and also the bushing 15 so that rotation will be imparted to the tool bar 13 and to the work 16.
Mounted in the upper portion of the boxing 15 is one end of the tool bar 24, the boxing being provided with an auxiliary key 25 operating in the keyway 26, whereby the tool bar will be locked within the boxing and rotation of the same prevented. It will be noted that the tool bar 24 extends to and beyond the boxing, the outer extremity of the bar being provided with a tool 27. The inner end of the tool bar is providedwith a longitudinally extending bar, the bar being threaded to receive a screw 28, the screw being rotatably mounted within the toothed wheel 2O and being provided with a star wheel 29. In order to hold the .bar 13 against rotation a screw 30 passes through the upright 11 and engages the work holding bar, thus holding the same against movement relative to the upright.
It is to be understood that the screw 28 being Carried by the toothed wheel 20, that upon rotation. of the latter and by means of the small toothed wheel 21, the tool bar and tool will be rotated about the work 16. The spindle 22 carries a pin 31 which, when the toothed `wheel 2O is rotated, will be engaged by the projections of the star wheel 29 at each revolution of the toothed wheel, thus turning the star wheel to actuate the screw 28 whereby the tool bar will be advanced to advance the tool 27 over the periphery of the crank pin or work 16.
In practice, when rotation is imparted to the toothed wheel 21, the larger toothed wheel 20 will be rotated, thus turning the tool bar and star wheel together with the boxing around the member 13, and that at each revolution of the toothed wheel the star wheel engaged by the pin 31 will cause the tool bar to be advanced in the boxing, thus advancing the tool 27 over the exterior surface to be trued up.
The machine described is of a simple construction, can be readily operated and although I have shown a spindle 22 as adapted to receive a handle and he manually rotated, it Will be understood that the same can be also operated by a suitable driving mechanism or other machinery such as electric motor or the like.
