WLS. J. ZW|CK.. ROOF STRUCTURE. APPLICATION FILED mums. 1912.
Patented Sept. 4,191? EN F I UNITED srnrns WILLIAM s. J. zwIcK, or CLEVELAND, or IIo, 'AssIGnon TO THE ronnsr CITY ENGINEERING COMPANY, or CLEVELAND, OHIO, A. ooRroan'rIoN. or OHIO.
aoor madame.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1917.
Application filed January 5, 1917. Serial No. 140,661.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. J. ZwIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roof Structures, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a roof construction and also involves a form of truss for the roof.
The invention relates more particularly to a modified form of monitor roof construction and is more particularly intended for factory buildings and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a roof construction which is so arranged as to permit a large amount of light to pass to the interior of the building for the purpose of illuminating the floor of the buildm Generally speaking, the invention may be said to comprise the elements and combinations thereof set forth in the accompanying claims.
Reference should be had to the accom panying drawing forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the upper portion of a monitor type of building, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged view showing certain details.
Factory buildings should be constructed to permit as large an amount of daylight to pass to the interior of the building as possi le.
Heretofore monitor roof construction has usually employed a roof rectangular in cross section for the monitor portion of the building, and the illumination, at least so far as outside light is concerned, has been by way of windows placed in the vertical sides of the monitor, and windows at the end of the monitor. These windows being vertically extending windows, do not direct the light toward the floor, but rather the light is more or less lost in the roof structure, except such light as is reflected to the floor from the roof, which is usually a small amount, due to the fact that the walls become coated with dust dirt. i
In the invention herein disclosed, it is my purpose to provide a portion of the roof of translucent material, and this portion of the roof is so situated that the light from the sky may pass directly through the translucent material to the floor of the building.
Referring to the drawing, the monitor is provided with a substantially fiat top 1, with substantially vertically extending side portions 2, these side portions cooperating with the lower roofs 3 at the sides of the monitor.
The roof portion 1 instead of meeting at an angle with the side portions 2, as is usual in monitor roof construction, cooperates with portions 4:, which portions are slanting, and are made of translucent ma terial. It will be seen that these portions 4 are in such position as to receive light directly from the sky, and to transmit that light directly to the floor of the building.
The portions 4 form a part of the roof.
The roof truss for the type of building herein disclosed, is modified from the usual form of truss employed for monitor building, and in this instance comprises a lower chord 5, upper chord 6, with intermediate bracing and tying rods 7 and the end portions of the upper and lower chords are connected by a slanting chord 8.
If desired, the roof portions 3, instead of extending outwardly to the side walls,as represented at 9, may also employ a slanting portion 10 which will. be made of translucent material. This portion 10, it will be seen is so placed as to transmit light from the sky directly to the floor of the building.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A monitor roof construction in which the top roof of the monitor comprises a central portion and slanting portions which slant away from the top portion said slanting portion being of translucent material, and side portions which extend substantially vertically with respect to the slanting portions.
2. A monitor roof construction having a central monitor portion and roofs at a lower level than the monitor which extend away from the monitor said monitor having a top roof portion and substantially vertically slanting outwardly and below the roof porextending sides Which cooperate with the tions to which they are adjacent, the said lower roofs, and slanting roof portions slanting portions being formed of trans- 0. which extend between the top roof portion lucent material.
' and the sides of the monitor, said slanting In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my roof portion being formed of translucent signature. material, the outer parts of the lower roofs WILLIAM S. J. ZWICK.
