rlhe main object of the invention is to construct and provide in apractical and cillating arm and another movingl part', which latter has a rectilinear motion, or moves in a line different from that of the point of attachment of the arm to said moving part.
When, for instance, a puppet valve or some other machine part that moves in a straight line has to be operated from an arm fulcrumed at some fixed point and attached to the valve stem at another point, which latter point in the movement of the parts describes a curve, it has always been a diflicult matter to provide a proper joint between said valve stem and arm which joint will have such freedom as to accommodate itself to the curved path of movement of the connection between the arm and the stem and, at the same time, be free from lost motion and wear.
Ordinarily, some type of link or sliding block is used for this purpose. A link is always the best mechanism, but when these links become very short, as will occur in nearly every case where a puppet valve is operated in the above-described manner, the construction of such a link possesses great difficulties.
In the annexed drawings the invention is illustrated as applied to a valve-stem deriving its motion from an oscillating lever, and wherein:

The eccentricity of the eccentric, or the distance between the center of eccentric 4 and the center of the pin 7 denoted by m, see Fig. l, then becomes the effective length of the link. The relative motion between the center of pin 7, which passes through a curve o, with a radius y, and the rectilinear movement of the valve-stem 1 produces an oscillation of the eccentric 4 in the enlargement or strap 3 to which it is fitted, and thus gives the mechanism freedom to operate.
It is evident that this mechanism is easy to construct and does not involve very many accurate fits. Thus the arm or lever 5, fulcrumed on shaft 6, is held between two faces 8, 8a of the support for the shaft, and the eccentric is fitted between the forked or bifurcated elements of the lever and is free to oscillate with the enlargement 3 and about pin 7. It is not, however, necessary to provide accurate lateral alinement between the lever and the valve-stem, and the enlargement 3 may be made narrower than the eccentric to provide clearance between thel stem and the bifurcated end of the lever. All that is necessary is, that the eccentric fit properly in thevbore of the valve-stem, that the pin 7 t accurately in the'eccentric, and that the center line of the valve-stem and of the pin or shaft 6 shall be at right angles to each other, so that the center line of the valve-stem coincides with the plane of oscillation of pin 7. The arm and the valvestem can thus be guided freely, the former on its fulcrum pin or shaft 6, between the members 8 and 8a, and the latter by its ways 2.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In combination with a member reciprocable in a right line; an actuator therefor standing at substantially right angles to the line of movement: Oisaid m-imber;A and; a connection between said member and actuator, comprising an eccentric carried byt the member and connected with the act-nator.
