' and useful Improvements in Couch-Platforms for Ships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in couch platforms for ships.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a resiliently mounted platform or couch for employment upon shipboard, the device being so arranged that the sup porting portion thereof will constantly re main horizontal.
A further object of the device is the provision of a couch for ships adapted for maintenance horizontally during the rock ing movement of the vessel, resilient supports being provided for the structure.
WVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device with one-half of the platform removed.

Fig. 3 is an end view of the device partially taken in section upon line TIL-III of Fig. 2.

The present device contemplates the provision of a rectangular frame 10 rigidly mounted upon the deck 11 of a vessel adapted for horizontally supporting a couch or platform 12.
The platform 12 is provided with bolsters 13 oppositely positioned and secured longitudinally beneath the platform by screws 14. Each bolster 13 provides an end block 15 and a connecting beam 16, the latter having a central upwardly projecting protubew Specification. of Letters Patent.

ance 17 the upper faces of said blocks and protuberances being in the same plane for supporting the platform 12 thereon, it being understood that the screws 14 engage within sockets 18 in the said faces.
A spindle 19 is pivoted as at 20 to each of the blocks 15 and is arranged laterally of the platform 12, projecting outwardly of the adjacent longitudinal side thereof at a point above the arcuate track portion 21 of one side of the frame 10. 3
In a similar manner, spindles 22 are pivoted as at 23 to the opposite end portions 24 of each bolster 13 for projecting outwardly of the ends of the platform 12 within arouate track portions 25 of the opposite ends of the frame 10. The pivots 20 and 23 are all arranged in the same plane, which plane is parallel to the platform 12, thereby normally positioning the spindles 19 and 22 in a plane parallel to the platform, it being noted that the spindles 22 extend past the adjacent posts 15.
A grooved roller or wheel 26 is freely slidably arranged upon each of the spindles l9 and 22, the said rollers being positioned for traveling upon the arcuate tracks 21 and 25. Leaf springs 27 are attached as at 28 beneath the platform 12 and as at 29 to the spindles 22 or the wheels 26 positioned at the ends of the device, it being understood that said spindles 22 are of greater length than the side spindles 19. Bow springs 30 are secured as at 31 beneath the platform 12 and as at 32 to the upper sides of the side spindles 19, said springs 30 being arranged adjacent the pivoting blocks 15, while the blocks 15 are arranged between the end springs 27 and the pivoting bolster portions 2 1 of the end spindles 22.
The complete operation of the device will be apparent from this detailed description thereof, it being understood that when set up for use, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the spindles 19 and 22 re siliently support the platform 12 by means of the springs 27 and 30, the action of the springs being simultaneous with the pivotal movement of the spindles. All of the wheels 26 are free to move upon the tracks 21 and 25 so that during the rolling and tossing movements of the ship, the platform 12 may slightly move longitudinally or transversely such movement in one direction being permitted by the slidable arrangement of the wheels 26 upon the spindles 11.9 and; 22. The
tilting movements of the deck 11 and the frame 10, in effect move the tracks 21 and 25 beneath the wheels 26, permitting the latter to turn in either direction while the weight of the platform 12 and the mechanism or load carried thereby automatically returns the device to a horizontal position when the frame 10' is restored to such position, while the present manner of mounting the wheels 26 upon the frame 12 tends to automatically maintain the platform in its initial position assumed upon the beginning of the operation of the device.
A platform for couch or other purposes is arranged which is suitably cushioned and is maintained unaffected by movements of the ship and assists in the comfort and safety of the passengers.

- spindles pivotally carried by the platform projecting adjaeentthe said track portions, and wheels slidably journaled upon the said spindles and mounted upon said track portions. c
2. A ships couch comprising a platform having arcuate side and end tracks, pairs of wheels "operatively arranged upon said tracks, a supporting platform, andspindles pivoted beneath said platform and upon which the said wheels are slidably journaled.
3. A ships couch comprising a platform, opposite bolsters carried by the platform,
longitudinally and transversely positioned spindles pivoted to the said bolster, arcuate end and side tracks beneath said platform,
and grooved Wheels upon the said tracks slidably journaled upon said spindles.
l. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular frame having arcuate side and end tracks, a platform, opposite bolsters longitudinally secured beneath said platform having end portions and terminal end blocks, transversely-arranged spindles pivoted in said blocks, longitudinally arranged spindles pivoted in said end portions of the bolster, and grooved wheels upon the said spindles shiftably arranged upon the said tracks. 7 l
