IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,922, dated February 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MEIZ, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Valve and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing andto the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the pump-valve for which Letters Patent were granted to me August 1, 1871; and it consists in wrapping the interior metal rings or stays, whether one or more, with a textile fabric saturated with a composition of beef-tallow and pine-tar, or their equivalents, before being driven into the shell of the pump-valve, so as to prevent, as much as possible, the water from coming in contact with the metal of which the rings or stays are composed, and to protect the rings or stays from the friction of the water.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of my pumpvalve.
A represents the shell, B the valve, and O O the rings or stays on the interior of said shell, all constructed substantially in the same manner, as described in my patent above referred to. In that case the water came in contact with the metal of which the rings or stays O 0 were made, which is obviated by my present invention.
' I make a composition of one-fourth beef-tallow and three-fourths pine-tar. The pine-tar is to be boiled down nearly to the consistency of pitch and the tallow added while the tar is still hot, stirring it well, so as to make as perfect a mixture as possible. Some textile fabric or cloth is then saturated with said composition and wrapped around the rings or stays O O, which are afterward driven into the shell A of the pump-valve. In the drawing this wrapping is marked a, By this means the water is prevented from coming in contact with the metal rings or stays, which are thereby protected from the friction of the water.
I do not wish to be understood as specially claiming under this patent a composition of beef-tallow and pine-tar by itself.-
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shell A, provided with one or more interior rings or stays O, wrapped with cloth or other textile fabric saturated with a composition of beef-tallow and pine-tar, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
