QQlVfBINED SWORD PIS TQL.
Specification of Letters r aitent.
Pate dsert- 4, 19.1
Application fi-led June 11, 1917. Serial No.'174,026.
T 0 all whom it may concern mond, in the county of Robertson and State' of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CombinedSwords and Pistols, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a combined sword and pistol wherein the pistol is supported by .the sword blade adjacent the handle portion thereof and with the stock of the pistol rigidly mounted andproviding a structure that is capable of permitting the barrel portion of the pistol to be broken down or moved relatively to the stock to facilitate emptying of the pistol barrel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a-eombined sword and pistol structurein which the pistol is supported adjacent the sword handle, and wherein the sword handle guard is adjustable relative to the sword and pistol whereby the same may be moved to a position spaced from the pistol handle or stock to facilitate the use of the pistol.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear. as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a combined sword and pistol constructed in accordance with the present invention, the pistol barrel being shown as broken down by dotted lines while the sword handle guard is also shown in a dotted line posi- A tion when the pistol is to be used.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line IIIIII of Fig. 1 showing the bracket for supporting the barrel portion of the pistol.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on line IVIV of Fig. 1 showing the method of supporting the pistol stock, and,
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on line V-V of Fig. 1 showing the sword handle guard in upright position in full lines and in lowered position in dotted lines with a mechanism for holding the same in either position.
Referring more in detail to the accompa- .nying drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates the blade portion of a sword of any preferred design and havingv a handle 11 uponone end thereof, upon which is adjustably mounted a guard 12. As shown in Fig.1, the guard is of substantial U- shape, having at its outer end a ring portion 13 rotatably seated in a corresponding circumferential groove provided in the outer end of the handle 11 while the inner end of the guard 12 is provided with a similar ring 14 journaled in a corresponding groove.
formed in the inner end of the handle; As
clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 5, one side socket 18 formed in the acent curved portion of the handle 11'. It will be seen -,by,reference to Figs. 1 and 5, that the guard 12, positioned as shown, is so retained by the tensio-ned pin 16. reverse the position of the guard, the pin 16 is moved outwardly against the tension of the spring 17 to free the inner end of the pin from the socketlS in the sword handle v11, at which time the guard 12 may be readily shifted to its lowered position as shown by dotted linesin said figures, and so retained by the tensioned pin engaging in the opposite correspondingsocket 18. The pistol structure is supported by the sword blade 10 adjacent the handle 11 and guard 12, and includes in detail a bracket arm 19 bifurcated at its lower end as shown in Fig. 3 to straddle the upper side of the sword blade 10 and be retained in such position by the bolt 20. The upper end of the bracket arm 19 is similarly constructed and is adapted to receive a frame portion 21 of a gun barrel 22 and pivotally support the same upon the pin 23, the gun barrel 22 carrying the usual revolving shell chamber 24,-- cooperating with an ordinary form of revolver frame 25. As shown in Figs. 2 and 4:, the revolver frame has a plate 26 depending therefrom and bifurcated at its lower end, similarly to the bracket arm 19 to be received on the When it is desired to parent, it being noted that whenthe device is to be used as a sword, the guard, 12 may remain in the full line position shown in Fig. 1, positioned above the handle and sword blade properly to protect the hand of the user. When iris desired to use the pistol portion of the device, the guard 12 is shifted upon its mounting rings 13 and 14: and moved to the dotted line positions shownin Figs. 1 and 5 andv so retained by the tensioned locking pin 16. When so arranged, the pistol stock may be readily grasped by the hand of the user and the guard 12 will be entirely removed out of the way so as to ofiier no hindrance whatever. As shown in dotted lines in Fig, 1 the pistol barrel 22 may be readily broken down to remove the empty shells from the shell chamber 24 and' subsequently returned to "2a proper position.
While the form of the invention herein shown and describedis what is'believedto "-be thepreferred embodiment thereof, it is "nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of .theparts may be made without departing from the spirit and Scope of the invention as claimed.- a I v WhatIclaim as new is:
' barrel of the -i 1. A combined pistol and sword including asword blade, a handle carried thereby,
guard for the handle and a pistol attached "to, the sword blade adjacent the handle, the
pistol being pivotally supported. I I
' 2; A combined pistol and sword including a sword blade, a handle carriedthereby, a guard for the handle and a pistol attached 'to thesword blade adjacent the handle, a bracket 'carriedbythesword blade for pivotally supporting the barrel portion of the pistol.
combmed plstol' and sword includ- Copies of this patent may be obtained tor ing a sword blade, a carriedthereby,
a guard for the handle and a pistolattached to the sword blade adjacent the handle, the guard being movable relative to the sword handle and pistol.
4KA combined pistol and sword including a sword blade, a handle carried thereby,
' a guard for the handle and a pistol attached to the sword blade adjacent the handle, the
guard being of substantial U-shape and having a ring'at each end thereof rotatably supported by the sword handle;
, 5. A combined pistol andsword including a sword blade, a handle carriedthereby, a guard for the handle and a pistol attached to the sword blade adjacent the handle, said guard-being movable relative to the handle, and a tensioned' pin associated with the sword handle and guard for holding the guard in adjustable position.
6. A combined pistol and sword including a sword blade, a handle 'carriedthereby, a guard for the handle and a pistol attached to the sword blade adjacent theh'andle', the guard being adjustable relative to, the sword handle, and a tensioned pin carriedby the guard adapted to engage recesses formed; in the sword handle at selective points.
7 A combined sword and pistol includinga sword blade, handle and guard, a pistol supported by'the sword blade adjacent the guard with the stock of the pistol in normal alinement with the guard, the guard being movable to a position rem'ote from the pistol stock to permit an easy grasping of the pistol stock.
8. A combined sword and pistol'flineluding a sword blade, handle and guard, a-pis tol supported by the sword blade adjacent the guard with thestock ofthe pistol in normal alinement with the guard, the guard being movable to a position remote from the pistol stock ,to permit an easy graspingof the pistol stock, and means for holding the guard in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
