Description
c. E. MOORE.
ROD PACKING RING.
APPLICATION man APR. 9. 1911.
lfi gflggo Patented Sept. 4,1917.
A TTORNEYQ pints CLARENCE E. MOORE, OF VIRGINIA, MINNESOTA.
non PACKING-RING.
Application filed April 9, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. Moons, citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod Packing- Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention consists of certain improvements in metallic packing rings and relates particularly to that class of ring shown and described in United States Letters Patent No. 1,211,613 dated Jan. 9th, 1917, and granted to me.
The object of my present invention is to provide simple and practical means for maintaining proper operative relation of the various portions of the packing ring irrespective of the wearing away of same.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts;
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through the center of half of one of the packing rings and at right angles to the axis thereof, and
Fig. :2 is a top plan view of same.
1 represents a reciprocal rod about which the ring 2 is designed to snugly fit and form a tight joint; said ring being formed of a plurality of arcuate interlocking sections and filler blocks. The abutting ends of the sections of the ring 2, each has a channel or slot 4 cut longitudinally therein, and which slots are directly opposite each other when the sections of the ring are a-lined in position about the rod 1. Into each pair of these adjacent slots is designed to fit a filler block 5, which has formed integral therewith the cap 6, and the ends of which latter terminate flush with the ends of the block, while the sides extend beyond the sides of the block to a point in exact alinement with the sides of the ring.
Within the upper surface thereof, and longitudinally the center of the cap, is formed a semicircular groove or seat 7, for the reception of the. continuous circular spring 8, which extends entirely around the rim and Specification of Letters Patent.

blocks when assembled, the bottom of the seat 7 being preferably somewhat above the plane with the underside of the cap 6.
The complete ring when assembled with the abutting ends of the various sections touching each other, is of a diameter considerably less than that of the rod 1, so that when applied thereto there will exist spaces 9 intermediate the ends thereof, and similar spaces intermediate the ends of the filler blocks and the ends of the channels 4, to provide means for contraction of the ring to compensate for wear.
In the drawings, the ring is shown as when first assembled upon the rod and prior to having been worn to any extent. It is evident that in this position it would be quite possible for one or more of the sections of the ring to become displaced in relation to the filler blocks, or the filler blocks themselves becoming misplaced, were no means provided to prevent same, and such means constitutes my present invention.
Said means are now being described.
A scarf 10, is formed upon the inner corner of each side wall of the slots 4E, Upon the side walls of each filler block and adjacent each end thereof, are fixed protruding pins 11, two upon each side of the block and which extend within the scarfs 10. The scarfs 10, extend from the inner end of each slot 4 to a point adjacent the free ends of the side walls of the slot, but do not extend the full length thereof, leaving a shoulder 12, against which the pins 11 abut when the ring is fully expanded. Thus when the ring is assembled, the pins 11 are free to reciprocate within the scarfs, but act as a limiting means to the extent of circular movement of the sections or filler blocks, when the pins are caused to abut either end of the scarfs, to prevent their becoming in any way disconnected by circumferentially traveling or creeping upon the rod 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a rod packing ring comprising a plurality of arcuate sections having slots in the abutting ends thereof, co-- operating filler members Within the slots and in the scarf substantially as and for the a continuous circumferential spring for purpose described. 10 holding the members of the ring together, of In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my scarfs formed upon the outer circumferensignature in the presence of tWo Witnesses:
tial edges of the slots and terminating short CLARENCE E. MOORE. of the open ends thereof, and pins project- Witnesses: ing from opposite sides of each end of each I ANDREW J. WAsGA'rT, fi l member d iproca ly engaged with- L. A, Rows,-
