.Beit known that I, SAMUEL H. Domitian, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Franand yet isiinexpensiveiin itsproduction.
Another object is to provide a protector or guard which includes an exposablehead-portion of relativelywlarge dimensions, afootportion comprising outspread sections with an interveninggroove having a surface of substantial area, and a web-portionconnecting the head and foot portions and comparatively thinin cross-section. u
The invention contemplates other objects and possesses resultant advantages, all as will be pointed out in the following specification and set forth in the annexed claims.
The invention resides broadly in the feature of construction and relative arrangement of the parts thereof, all as will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of application of which will be indicated in the claims hereto appended.
The accompanying drawings are illustrative of one of the many possible utiliza tions of the invention and are appended hereto as a part of its disclosure. It will be manifest that other possible utilizations and embodiments employing the underlying principles of the invention may be resorted to and be within the spirit thereof and within the objects contemplated thereby.

Extending from the. extremities 5, 5 are arcuatelywcut surfaces 6, 16 that terminate in an-gularlydisposedapproximately flat surfaces 7, '7 which, in turn, extend to the extremities .8, f fork- sections 9, 9 that form the foot-section 3.
Formed between the fork-sections is an elongated groove 10 which, as shown in Figs. land 2, is concaved; though, as shown in Fig. 3, it may be V-shaped. The groove is of substantialdepth to presentia surface of relatively great area, and for a purpose presently to be explained. The sections 9, 9 preferably are relatively thinner thanithe web-section.
As shown, the device is so embedded in the cement 0 that the portion 1 occupies a position longitudinal of the curb or other edge to protect it, while the portion 3 firmly anchors the whole structure in the cement.
It is a further feature of the invention to present a plurality of elongated surfaces, angular-1y arranged relatively, whereby a blow or impact against any portion of the exposed surface of the head-portion will be distributed in proper proportion to the abutting surfaces of the structure. To this end the fork sections 9 are so related to the arcuately cut portions of the head section that lines drawn to form continuations of the flat surfaces 7, 7 will form tangents on the inner surfaces of the curve portions and intersect at approximately the center of the web portion. Due to this construction, the force of a blow, delivered at the corners of the head portion. will be transmitted in approximately a direct line through the flange on the opposite side, while force delivered to the center of the head portion is transmitted directly through the web 2. In this way vibrations of the parts are virtually eliminated, and the tendency of the protector to crack, split or As many changes can be made in the construction and form and many other widely different embodiments of the invention can be made without departing from the scope and spirit thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in any limiting sense. It .is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
What I claim is:
1. A protecting guard for cement work and the like, including an exposable headportion; a foot-portion comprising two outspreading spaced-apart fork-sections with a V-shaped groove formed therebetween; and a web-portion connecting the head and foot portions and of a thickness substantially less than that of the head-portion; said fork-sections being of a thickness less than that of the web-portion and having their outspread extremitiesin approximate alinement with the oppositely disposed portions of the curved surfaces of the head portion; the surfaces of the guard between the extremities of the head-portion and'the extremities of the fork-sections being curved,
continuous and uninterrupted; whereby the portions, each side of the guard between" the extremity of an outwardly extending section and the corner-section of the headportion being formed with a' curved surface of substantial length and a flat surface also of substantial length, said side of the guard presenting a -continuous and uninterrupted surface. o
