Description
P. FINKELSTEIN. MANUALLY REMOVABLE BOTTLE CAP. APPLICATEON FILED AUG-1|, 191s.
. gvwcwcoz Emu? TLNKELETEIPP 32., Patented Sept. 4,1917.
I PHILIP FINKELSTEIN, or JAMES CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANUnLLY-REMQVABLE BOTTLE-CAP. I
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILrP FINKELsTEIN,
'a citizen oftheUnited States residing at James City, in the county of lillk, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Manually-Removable Bottle-Cap; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact, description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 4
The present invention relatesfto a manually removable bottle cap, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be readily removed without the necessity of using a special opener or other tool.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a manually removable bottle cap. which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be used in the same manner as an ordinary crimped bottle ,cap, which can be removed without difliculty bythe hand, and which can be replaced upon the ,bottle when such is desired.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combina tions and arrangements of the parts aswill more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out inthe appended claim. For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in,
I whic Figure 1 is a top plan view of the blank from which the bottle cap is formed;
Fig. 2 'is a side elevation of abottle neck provided with a manually removable cap the bottle from a the bottle from a position at right angles to I that of Fig. 3, portions being broken away and shown in section.
Corresponding and like partsare referred to inthe following description and indicated Specification of Letters Patent.
disk 4: is arranged trate one embodiment of theinvention, the,
numeraLl designates the neck of the conventional form of bottle, said neck being provided at the mouth thereofwith an exterior rib 2 which is adapted to be engaged in the usual manner by the crimpe'd side walls 3 of a sheet metal cap 3. The u'sualpacking within the cap 3-so as to be forced tightlyagains't the mouth of the bottle and provide a cap is in position.
At substantially diametrically opposite sides of the cap the side walls 3 are provided at the lower edges thereof with integral extensions 5, said extensions being bent upwardly, and being provided with side wings or flanges 5 which are turned upwardly into engagement with each other,
oration.
Patented Sept. ll, 1911?. Application filed August 11, 1916. Serial No. 114,364. I
gas tight seal when the thereby providing outstanding finger pieces which have a hollow formation and are triangular in "cross section. These finger pieces are preferably inclined upwardly to a slight extent, and the flat lower faces thereof may be slightly, concave'd so as to provide a bearing for the fingers when pressing against one of the lugs to remove the cap.
,The inner ends of the flanges or wings 5 may be slightly curved where they were cut away from the edges of the cap, as indicated at 6, said curved portions 6 providing seats which engage the sides and top of the cap when the parts are bent into position. The triangular cross section of the finger pieces gives them the necessary rigidity without requiring an excessive thickness of material, and when an upward pressure is exerted upon one of the finger pieces by the thumb, the'adjacent portion of the crimped side wall 3 of the cap is sprung outwardly and the 'capsimultaneously tilted upwardly to unseat it from the mouth of the bottle and remove it. from position. The crimps are preferably omitted from the side walls of the cap at the points where the finger pieces are provided, leaving the uncrimped portions 3* at the ends of the finger pieces, The
entire cap can be easily formed by stamping it from sheet metal, facturing the caps with the finger pieces projecting therefrom will not be excessive.
If desired, the finger pieces may be iniand the cost of manutially bent downwardly against the sides of no the bottle neck, as indicated by Figs. 2 and 4. This would avoid any objectionable projections when handling and packing the bottles, and the finger pleces could be quickly bent upwardly into operative position when it was desired to remove the cap.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent, is
The herein described manually removable bottle cap formed from a single sheet of ma neck, but are adapted to be bent outwardly into a radial position, said extensions being provided upon opposite edges thereof with longitudinal flanges which extend the full length thereof and are of uniform width,
said flanges being returned outwardly into engagement with each other and cooperating with the respective flanges to provide hollow finger pieces which are triangularin cross section and have a uniform cross section throughout theirentire length, thelower faces of the finger pieces being flat so as to be readily engaged 'bythe fingers, andthe inner. ends of the side flanges being formed with seats which are arranged for engagement with the side 'walls of the cap to provide a stop for the finger piece when it 1s v swung upwardly into operativeposition.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILIP FINKELSDTEINA.
