To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Hennen F. GRUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tape-Afiixing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a tape aiilixing machine, and Ais particularly serviceable for afixing belts or reinforcing strips of tape to corsets or other garments. However, it will be understood that my invention can be used advantageously for afliXing tape or other strip material to other articles.
Prior to my invention, it was usually the custom to baste or otherwise sew these strips to the corset or the like, but this operation was both expensive and unreliable, since these stitches had to be pulled out by hand after the garment was finished. Other methods were to paste or pin the belt on the garment by hand. These were also expensive operations, and there was no uniformity insured.
It is therefore one of the objects of my invention to provide a machine which will both quickly and uniformly affix strips of tape or the like as above 'described to garments or other articles.
Another object of my invention is to produce a machine of the above described type which will coat the tape with adhesive material, said coating being such as to properly secure the tape to the garment, butA which will be of such width as to permit the tape to conform to the curved contour of the garment. without buckling Vor in any way changing the shape of the garment proper.
A still further object of my invention is to provide severing or cutting mechanism which will cut the tape at any angle, so that the cut ends of the tape will correspond with and neatly fit certain portions of the garment.
A still further object is to provide means whereby the tape will be severed at such a point that it will be of the required leneth to cover the part of the garment to which it is desired to have it aihXed.
A still further object is to so construct a machine of the above described type which may be easily operated and controlled, and which will be durable and .of simple construction.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is a main frame or supporting structure which constitutes a table and may be made in any suitable manner. The arm 5 has a depending yoked end 6 in which is journaled a shaft 7 having secured thereto a feed roller or wheel S, the purpose of which will be described hereinafter.
The base 2 has a depending portion 9 which forms bearing for a rotatable shaft 10, and this shaft 10 forms a swinging support for a bar 11 having a shaft 1Q journaled in its free end to which is attache-d a feed roller or wheel 13. This wheel 13 is normally held in engagement with the `wheel 8 by means of a cam 14 on a lever 15,
the latter being pivot-ed at 16 to a depending ear 17 0n the base 2. The base 2 has an opening 2 to permit the movement of the wheel 13 therethrough to engage the wheel 8.
The lever 15 has its end 18 connected to one end of a coiled tension spring 19, the other end of said spring being secured to a hook 2O which may be affixed in the floor or other immovable object.
The end 18 of the lever also has secured to it, one end of a chain 21, said chain eX- tending upwardly from said lever 15, and
passing around an anti-friction pulley 22 which is mounted in the base 2, and then downwardly to a foot lever 23 which is pivoted at 24 in a plate 25 on the floor.
rI`he spring 19 normally holds the end 18 of the lever 15 in such a position th-at the cam 14 supports the bar 11, and thereby holds the wheel 13 in contact with the wheel 8 as above mentioned; however, it will be understood that if the foot lever 23 is lowered, the chain 21 will raise the end 18 of the lever 15 and thereby move the cam 14 away from the bar 11, allowing the latter to fall and hence causing the wheel 13 to move away from the wheel 8. This movement takes place when it is desired to either insert or remove a fabric from between the wheels 12 and 8, either prior to its having` a. tape afiixed or after the tape has been affixed and severed.
Immediately upon the release of the foot lever 23, the spring 19 will again lower the 'end`18 of the lever 15, and thereby automatically effect the raising of the wheel 13 in contact with the wheel S.
The shaft 10 has aiiXed thereto a pulley 26 which is driven b y a belt 27 from any source of power. This shaft 10 will hereinafter be termed the main drive shaft, and has keyed thereto a sprocket 28 over which passes a4 chain 29 for actuating a sprocket 30 Von the shaft 12 to drive the wheel 13 and,
through frictional engagement therewith, the wheel 8.
A bearing plate 31 is mounted on the upper surface of the arm 5 and forms a pivot Y support at 32 for a lever 33 having arms 34 and 35. This lever is in the form of a bellcrank and has pivoted at 36 to the arm 34, another swinging lever 37 having a roller 38 rotatably mounted in its free end.
The arm 35 has a short shaft 39 ournaled therein, and to this shaft is secured a roller be hereinafter described.
A paste tank 45 is secured to the outer end of the arm 5, and has a bearing bracket 46 thereon which forms a journal support for a transversely extending shaft 47 having` secured thereon at its outer end a sheave pulley 48 which vis operatively connected by a belt 49 to another sheave pulley 50 secured to the shaft 7.
A paste-applying disk 51 is secured to the shaft 47 and a portion of this disk rotates 'within the tank 45 and a portion extends l' nected to a pivot pin 61 on a crank wheelv62, the latter being xed to a rotatable shaft 63 out of the tank in such a position as to be normally engaged by the knurled portion 43a of the roller 40, so that a rotation of said disk 51 will coat said knurled portion 43a with paste from the tank 45.
I preferably use paste which has a consistency of thick cream such for example as white library or photographers paste. It will be readily seen that if a paste of this consistency was used, a few rotations of the disk 51 therein would cut a groove in the paste and the paste would not run in contact with the disk. As a means for agitating the'paste and for constantly supplying the disk 51 with a new coating of the paste, I provide an agitator within the tank, and this agitator has an upwardly projecting rod 53 which is journaled in a bracket 54 and has secured to its upper end a beveled pinion 55 which meshes with a beveled gear 56 on a transversely extending shaft 57 journaled in arms 58 on the bracket The shaft 57 receives a Vrocking movement to cause an oscillatory movement of the agitator 52 by means of the following' mechanism :A crank arm 59 has one end clamped upon the outer end of the shaft 57, and its other end pivotally connected to one end of link 60. The other end of said link is conadjacent the upper portion of the standard 4.
This shaft has secured thereto a sprocket 64 over which passes a chain 65, the latter 100 being operated by a sprocket 66 on the main drive shaft 10. The pin 61 acts as a crank pin and imparts an oscillatory movement to the crank arm 59 and through the medium of the shaft 57, bevel 56, and pinion'105 55, this movement will be imparted to the agitator 52. v
A rack arm 67 is pivoted at 68 lto a projection on the arm 5, and has a series of tension pins 69 extending laterally therefrom, 110 the axes of these pins being in substantially the same plane, for example, as the rungs vof a ladder, as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and form a guide for the tape as it is unwound from a spool 70 115 pivotally mounted in creel brackets 71 which are supported on the upper surface of said arm 5. Y
The tape is threaded or laced between these tension pins 69 in a zigzag manner, 120 after which it passes through a guide 72 mounted above the free end of the rack 67, and lin such position as to pass .over the top of the roller 38 and between the latter and the roller 40 (seepFigs. 1 and 2).
The weight of the roller 38 and rack 67 causes the tape to be evenly and Vtightly stretched around the roller 3S and pressed positively in contact with said roller. This prevents any buckling or unevenness in the tape at this stage of the progress of the tape through the machine.
In like manner, the fact that the lever 31 is pivoted at 32 and the arm 35 is weighted with the roller 4:0, will cause said arm to move downwardly and positively engage the paste applicating disk 51. After passing between the rollers 38 and 4:0, the tape extends downwardly in a position above the wheel 8, and is held in engagement therewith by means of a tape-guiding roller 7 3, thisroller being mounted in arms 711 which are pivoted at 7 5 to a plate 76 secured to the front end of the arm portion 6, and a fiat spring 77 engages the arms 71 and serves to resiliently press the tape in contact with the wheel 8.
A tape guide 7 S is secured to the lower portion of the plate 76, and is so shaped as to follow the general peripheral contour of the wheel 8 in order to direct the tape as it is fed between the wheels 13 and 8. This tape guide 78 is also mounted directly above a work plate 7 9 upon which the garment rests and slides. The work plate 79 has an opening 79L directly over the opening 2aof the base 2, so that the wheel 13 also passes through the work plate 7 9 (see Fig. 3).
This work plate has an adjustable section l 80 which forms a gage member as will be more fully described hereinafter. The tape after leaving its position between the wheel 8 andl pressure roll 73, passes over the cutting edge of a blade 81 which is secured i within a plate S2 centrally pivoted at 83 to the plate 7 6, so that the plate S2 is free to be rocked and thereby change the angle of the cutting edge of said blade S1 with respect to the tape.
An upper cutting blade 84, which coperates with said blade 81 to sever the tape, is secured to an arm 85, the latter being pivoted at 86 to one end of said plate 82, so
that the arm 85 is movable on the plate 82 and also takes the swinging movement of Vsaid plate S2 as previously described.
The nlate S2 may be moved on the pivot 33 into any position and locked in this position bv the following mechanism z-A link Sis slotted at 88, and has its one end pivoted at S9 to an arm 90 on the plate S2. An adjusting screw 91 extends through the slot S8 of the link 87, and is secured within a tapped opening (not shown) in the lower portion of a graduated plate 92, the latter being secured by screws 93 (see Fig. 2) to the side of the paste tank 45.
rlhis graduated plate has a series of markings such as numbered lines, the middle of the lines being indicated at zero and extending upwardly and downwardly therefrom nv the numerals 1,2, 3and Ll, as shown in Fig. however, any other markings may be used if so desired, such as letters or words. The upper end of the link 87 has a pointer 94 and said link 87 is of such length that when this pointer is opposite the zero mark on the scale, the plate S2 will be in such position that its cutting blades 81 and Sl, will be substantially horizontal, and if the arm 85 is actuated when the plate is in this position, the tape will be severed at ninety degrees to the ruiming edges thereof.
To move the plate so as to present the knives at different angles, it is merely necessary to loosen the screw 91 and move the link either upwardly or downwardly in relation to the indicating marks on said graduated scale and clamp said link to the scale by the screw 91 when the desired angle of the cutting blades is attained.
ln order to actnate the arm 35, which has the cutting blade Sflthereon, to cut the tape, I provide the following mechanism: The plate 82 and extension are provided with the arm 90, before mentioned, and another arm 9G, and these arms forni guideways for a slidable rod 97 having a set screw 98 therein which passes through a slot 99 in the varm S5, so that a slidable movement of the rod 97 will swing the arm 85 on its pivot 80. Projecting outwardly from the free end of the arm 85, is a stud screw 100 having an enlarged end 101. A spring 102 is designed to press against said stud screw 100 and exert a downward pressure thereon to provide proper shear engagement between the blades 81 and S4.
The spring 102 is rigidly secured within a head 103 by means of a set screw 10-t, the latterengaging a tapped opening in said head 103 and securing the spring positively therein (see Fig. 4l).
With this construction it will be understood that while the spring 102 takes the same movement as the rod 97, it is free to frictionally slide on the upper part of the stud screw 100, said sliding movement being necessary to compensate for the different poangle thereto and this end has a hole through which the reduced portion 105 of the rod 97 extends.
A nut 108 fits ,said threaded portion and serves to hold the link end 107 to the rod. This connection of the link 107 is preferably loose, so that the movements required by the plate 82 may be attained without any strain on said link 106.
The opposite end of the link 10G is pivotally connected at 109 to one arm of a bellcrank-lever 110, the latter being pivoted at 111 to the arm 5. The other arm of the bellcrank-lever is connected by a chain 112 to a foot lever 113 which is pivoted on the shaft 2A mounted on the floor.
It will be observed that a downward movement of the foot lever 113 will effect the movement of the arm 85 from the position shown in dot and dash lines, Fig. 4, to the position shown in full lines of the same figure, thereby acting to sever the tape.
To return said arm 85 to its normal position as shown in dot-and-da'sh lines just referred to, I provide a tension spring 114,
one end of which is secured to a depending projection 115 on the arm 5, the other end being connected by a chain or other flexible member 116 to the link 106, so that a, contraction of the spring 114 will move the lever 106 toward the front of the machine, and thereby slide the rod 97 to move the arm 85 into said dot-and-dash position.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
A garment or other article, to which a piece of strip material or tape is to be affixed, is placed upon the work plate 79. The rotation of the shaft 10 will rotate the wheel 13, and since the wheel 13 is in frictional engagement with the wheel 8, said latter wheel will also be rotated and these two wheels will act as a pair of gripping rolls to feed the garment in the direction of the rear standard 4.
The free end of the tape as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is laced through the guide 78, and passes out of the end of this guide at a point directly above the garment, so that the tape which has previously had paste applied thereto through the medium of the disk 51 and knurled edge 43 of the roller 40, will be pressed in contact with the garment due to the action exerted by the spring 19 of cam 14 which keeps the roller 13 in resilient frictional engagement with the under surface of the garment as it is passing between the wheels 13 and 8, thus causing the strip to be pressed on the upper surface of the garment, the paste serving to connect the tape to the garment as it passes between said wheels.
The paste disk 51 will be rotated through the medium of the pulley 48, belt 49, and pulley 50, and the roller 40 will be rotated through the medium of pulleys 4l, 42, and the cross belt 42a, it of course being understood that the shaft 7 which has the wheel 8 secured thereto is rotated due to the friction between the wheels 13 and 8. Likewise, .the roller 38 is rotated due to its frictional engagement with the roller 40.
The paste-applying disk 51 is narrow, and in such position as only to apply the paste to the knurled portion 43, so that the tape as it passes between the rollers 38 and 40 will receive a coating of the paste of no greater width than the width of the said knurled portion 43, and since this coating of paste is much narrower than the tape, it is to be understood that when the tape is pressed in engagement with the garment and secured thereto by the paste, the'greater part of the width of the tape is left free, so that when the garment conforms to the shape of the wearer, the strip portion is free to follow the contour of said wearer without changing or buckling the garment proper.
As the garment is fed as Vheretofore described, the tape will be drawn from the reel through and between the above described elements, and when the properlength of tape has passed over the knife blade to cover the desired portion of the garment, the foot lever 113 is depressed and this movement causes the arm 85, carrying the knife blade 84, to be actuated and thereby sever the tape. Y
The operator is able to tell when sufficient amount of tape has passed over the knife blade 81 by the use of the extension 80 of the work plate 79 in the following manner z-The outer edge of said extension 80 is substantially the same distance from the bite or contacting point of the wheels 13 and 8 as is the cutting edge of the blade 81, S0 that when the portion of the garment to which tape is to be applied reaches the said edge of the extension 80., the operator knows that if the knife is actuated at that time, the tape will be of the correct length to complete the covering of the desired portion of the garment, so that after the severed end of the tape has been affixed to the garment, the fact that the latter is moving between the wheels 13 and 8 will cause a sufficient length of the tape to be fed over the knife blade 81 for the next application of the tape to the garment, so that there is always an end of the tape ready to be threaded through the guide 78 for contin-` uous applications of the tape to the garment.
The wheel 13 may be lowered out of fric-V tional engagement with the garment or the wheel 8 merely by the depression of the foot lever 23, so that when this wheel 13 is lowered, the garment may be quickly removed without interfering or moving any of the parts.
During the operation as just described, the agitator 52 will be continuously oscillated, and thereby keep the disk 51 constantly p coated with paste.
The plate 82 may be swung into different positions from time to time to cut the tape at different angles to suit the'requirements of the garment, it being merely necessary in order to change the cutting angle of the blades to loosen the nut 91 and to swing said plate until the pointer 94 is opposite the desired mark on the graduated scale plate. The screw 91 may be again tightened to secure the cutting' blades in the desired position.
The operator may sit either facing the edges of the wheels 13 and 8, or in some instances, may sit at ninety degrees to this position according` to the nature of the work to be operated upon.
It will therefore be seen that with a machine built in accordance with my invention, a garment or other article may have strips atlixed thereto quickly and easily, since the operator is merely required to guide the garment between the wheels 13 and S, and sever the tape when the end of the garnicht reaches the edge of the eXtension of the work plate, the application of the paste and the tension of the tape being controlled automatically.
My invention is such that if it is desired to clean or repair the several parts or for the re-threading'of the tape between the several elements, the rack 67 may be swung on its pivot 68, and the levers 33 and 37 may be separately or collectively moved on their respective pivot points, thus free ing' the paste applicating diskwhich `may be removed or cleaned with very little trouble.
`While I have illustrated the beveled pinion and beveled gear 56 as being complete wheels, it will be understood that in view of the fact that only an oscillatory movement is required for the shafts 53 and 57, I may use toothed quadrants or other toothed segments if so desired. However, I preferably use beveled wheels because if certainV of the teethshould become broken, it is merely necessary to bring new teeth into mesh by turning,- the wheels on their respective shafts, and again secure them thereto.
Furthermore, my machine is built on lines which are entirely practical from a mechanical aspect and are so designed as to be operative and require comparatively little power.
AsV clearly shown in Fig. 3, the wheel 8 and the tape duide 7S each extends over or overlaps the edg'e 13 of the wheel 13, so
that part of the tap'e does not come in contact with the wheel 13, but only that part of the tape adjacent the section thereof which has the paste thereon. By this construction it will be seen that the edge portion of the tape which does not have the adhesive will be free as hereinbefore described.
While I have described my invention as taking one particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing?, from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth. but consider that I am at liberty to malte such changes and alterations as fairlyV come within the scope ofthe appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
. 1. The combination in a tape affixingr machine, of two feed rollers, a guide for direc-tingl the tape between the rollers, means for rotating' the rollers to feed the tape therebetween, means for applying' paste to the tape, and means for relatively moving,` the rollers toward eachother to aifX the tape to material fed between the rollers, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a tape aflixing machine, of two feed rollers, a guide for directiny; the tape between the rollers, means for rotating the rollers to feed the tape there between, means for applyingpaste to the tape, and automatically operating' means for relatively moving the rollers toward each other to aflix the tape to material fed between the rollers, substantially as described.
3. The combination in a tape aifixina' machine, of two feed rollers, a guide for directing' the tape between the rollers, means for rotating; the rollers to feed the tape therebetween, means for applying paste to the tape, and means includingr a resilient member for relatively moving the rollers toward each other to press the tape therebetween, substantially as described.
The combination in a tape afliXing machine, of two feed rollers, a guide for directingr the tape between the rollers, means for rotatinglr the rollers to feed the tape therebetween, means for applying; pasteto the tape, means including` a resilient member for relatively moving' the rollers toward each other to press the tape therebetween, and independent actuated means operative to actuate said latter means to permit one of said rollers to move away from the other roller by gravity, said resilient means operating, when the independent mea-ns is released, to automatically move said rollers together, substantially as described.
The combination in a tape aiiixing' machine, of two feed rollers, a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, one of said latter rollers having an. annular groove in its peripheral surface, means for applying paste to said latter' mentioned roller on the part of said peripheral surface to one side of said lgroove, means for rotating said latter roller to convey and apply the paste to thetape, and means for rotating said first two rollers to feed and affix the pasted tape to material fed therebetween, substantially as described.
6. The combination, in a tape aiiixing' 1nachine, of two feed rollers` a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, a disk for applying paste to one of said pair of rollers, means for rotating4 said latter roller and the disk to convey and apply the paste to the tape'passing' therebetween. and means for rotating said irst two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
' 7. The combination in a tape afiixing Inachine, of two feed rollers, a pair of rollers between ywhich the tape is fed, a pivoted lever supporting said pair of rollers, a paste applying disk, one of said pair of rollers resting upon said disk, means for rotating said latter roller and the disk to convey and apply the paste to the tape passing therebetween, and means for rotating said first two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
S. The combination in a tape afliXing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted two-arm lever having a roller journaled in one of the said arms, and movable by its own weight into contact with said paste applying disk, a second lever pivoted on the other arm of said first lever and movable by its own weight into contact with the roller on said arm, means for guiding tape between said latter rollers, means for rotating the. disk and said latter rollers to convey and apply the paste to the tape, and means for rotating said first two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
9. The combination in a tape afliXing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted lever having a roller on its free end, said roller contacting by its own weight with said disk, a second lever, a roller thereon movable by its own weight into engagement with said latter roller, means for guiding tape between said latter rollers, means for rotating said latter rollers and the disk to convey and apply paste to the tape, and means for rotating said first two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
10.V The combination in a tape aliixing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted lever having a roller on its kfree end, said roller contacting by its own weight with said disk, a second lever, a roller thereon movable by its own weight into engagement with said latter roller, means for guiding tape between said latter rollers, means for rotating said latter rollers and the disk to convey and apply paste to the tape, a tape guide for directing the tape between said first two rollers, and means for rotating said latter rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
11. The combination in a tape aliixing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted lever having a roller on its free end, said roller contacting by its own weight with said disk, a second lever, a roller thereon movable by itsown weight into engagement with said latter roller,
means for guiding tape between said latter rollers, means for rotating said latter rollers and the disk to convey and apply-paste to the tape, a tape guiding roller adjacent one of said first rollers, resilient means for moving said tape guiding roller toward said first roller to hold the tape in engagement therewith, a tape guide for directing the tape between said first two rollers, and means for rotating said latter rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
12. The combination in a tape aiiixing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted lever having a roller on its free end, said roller contacting by its own weight with said disk, a second lever, a roller thereon movable by its own weight into engagement with said latter roller, a rack having a series of tension pins thereon to form a zigzag guide for the tape to direct the tape between said latter rollers, means for rotating said latter rollers and the disk to convey andv apply paste to the tape, and means for rotating said first two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
13. The combination in a tape afliXing machine, of two feed rollers, a paste applying disk, a pivoted lever having a roller on its free end, said roller contacting by its own weight with said disk, a second lever, a roller thereon movable by its own weight into engagement with said latter roller, a pivotally mounted rack having tension pins thereon forming a zigzag guide for the tape, a tape guide carried by said rack through which the tape passes after leaving the ten` sion pins to direct it between said latter two rollers, means for rotating said latter rollers and the disk to convey and apply paste to the tape, and means for Vrotating said first two rollers to feed the pasted tape therebetween, substantially as described.
14. The combination in a tape aliixing' machine, of a base, an arm thereon, a feed roller mounted on the arm above the "base, a second feed roller movable into engagement with said first feed roller, means for rotating said second feed, roller, the friction between said feed rollers causing the rotation of said first roller, a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, a paste disk in engagement with one of said pair of rollers, pulleys rotatable with said latter roller and the disk, pulleys rotatable with said first feed roller, and belts connecting said latter pulleys with the aforementioned pulleys to effect the driving of the disk and said pair of rollers, substantially as described.
15. The combination in a tape aifiXing machine, of a base, an arm thereon, a feed roller jonrnaled in said arm, a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, a paste' applying disk in engagement with lone of said pair of rollers, a shaft secured to said first feed roller and having pulleys thereon, pulleys rotatable with said disk and the said one of the pair of rollers, belts operatively connecting the pulleys on said shaft with the other pulleys, a main drive shaft, a bar pivotally mounted on the main drive shaft and having a shaft journaled in its free end, a roller and a sprocket keyed to said latter shaft, a sprocket on said main shaft, a chain operatively conneetinU said latter two sprockets, and means operative upon said bar for moving and holding said latter feed roller into engagement with the first-mentioned feed roller, substantially as described.
16. The combination in a tape affixing machine, of a base, an arm thereon, a feed roller journaled in said arm, a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, a paste applying disk in engagement with one of said pair of rollers, a shaft secured to said first feed roller and having pulleys thereon, pulleys rotatable with said disk and the said one of the pair of rollers, belts operatively connecting the pulleys on said shaft with the other pulleys, a main drive shaft, a bar pivotally mounted on the main drive shaft and having a sh aft journaled in its free end, a roller and a sprocket keyed to said latter shaft, a sprocket on said main shaft, a chain operatively connecting said latter two sprockets, a lever having a cam operative on said bar, and means for actuating said lever to effect the movement of the bar by said cam whereby the second feed roller is moved toward or from the first-mentioned feed roller, substantially as described. j
17. The combination in a tape. aflixing machine, of a base, an arm thereon, a feed roller ournaled in said arm, a pair of rollers between which the tape is fed, a paste applying disk in engagement with one of said pair of rollers, a shaft secured to said first feed roller and having pulleys thereon, pulleys rotatable with said disk and the said one of the pair of rollers, belts operatively connecting the pulleys on said shaft withv the other pulleys, a main drive shaft, a bar pivotally mounted on the main drive shaft and having a shaft j ournaled in its free end, a roller and a sprocket keyed to said latter shaft, a sprocket on said main shaft, a chain operatively connecting said latter two sprockets, a lever Vhaving a cam operative on said bar, a spring for moving the leveil to effect the raising of the bar to move said latter feed roller toward the first-mentioned feed roller, and a second means operative against the action of said spring for moving the lever to permit the lowering of said bar whereby the feed rollers are separated, substantially as described.
18. The combination in a tape affiXing machine, of a base, an arm thereon, a feed roller journaled in said arm, a pair of rollers between which'the tape is fed, a
paste applying disk in engagement with one of said pair of rollers, a shaft secured to said first feed roller and having pulleys thereon, pulleys rotatable with said disk and the said one of the pair of rollers, belts operatively connecting the pulleys on said shaft with the other pulleys, a main drive shaft, a bar pivotally mounted on the main drive shaft and having a shaft journaled in its free end, a roller and a sprocket keyed to said latter shaft, a sprocket on said main shaft, a chain operatively connecting said latter two sprockets, a lever having a cam operative on said bar, a tension spring operative on said lever to keep said bar raised and the feed rollers in contact, a foot lever, and a flexible connection between the foot lever and said first lever whereby the latter may be moved against the action of the spring to lower the bar and thereby separate the feed rollers, substantially as described.
19. The combination in a tape afiining machine, of two feed rollers, a work plate, means for feeding and guiding the tape around one of said feed rollers and between the latter, a knife located adjacent one of said feed rollers and at a distance from the bite of the feed rollers, said work plate having an extension the end of which is substantially the same distance from the bite of the feed rollers as is the knife, a movable cutting blade, and means for moving said movable blade to cut the tape, substantially as described.
20. The combination in a tape aflixing machine, of two feed rollers, a work plate, means for guiding the tape around one of said feed rollers and between the latter, a knife blade located adjacent one of said rollers, a lever, a bell-crank-lever, a second knife movable adjacent the first-mentioned knife, a link connecting the bell-cranklever and the second knife, means connecting the first-mentionel. lever and the bell-cranklever whereby the second knife is moved wh en the first-mentioned lever is actuated to effect the cutting of the tape, and automatically operative means for moving said second blade to its normal position when said first-mentioned lever is released, substantially as described.
21. The combination in a tape aflixing machine, of two feed rollers, a work plate, means for guiding the tape around one of said feed rollers and between the latter, a. knife blade located adjacent one of said rollers, a second knife blade, a foot lever, a slidable rod connected to the second blade, resilient means movable with said sliding rod and operative upon said second blade to keep the latter in shearing contact with the first blade, and means connecting said slidable member with the foot lever whereby the said second blade is moved when the foot lever is actuated to effect the cutting of the tape, and automatically operating means for moving said second blade to its normal position when said foot lever is released, substantially as described.
22. The combination in a tape affixing machine, of a base, a supporting arm thereon, a feed roller on said arm, a second feed roller adjacent said first feed roller, means for guiding tape around said first feed roller and between it and the second feed roller, a plate having a knife blade secured thereto and mounted to permit movement of said knife at an angle transversely to said tape, means for moving said plate to present the cutting edge of said knife blade at different angles transversely with respect to the tape, means for securing said plate in said angular positions, a second knife movably mounted on said plate and coperative with the first-mentioned knife, and means for moving said second knife to shear the tape, substantially as described.
23. The combination in a tape aflixing machine, of a base, a supporting arm thereon, a feed roller on said arm, a second feed roller adjacent said first feed roller, means for guiding tape around said first feed roller and between it and the second feed roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said arm and having a knife blade secured thereto, said knife blade extending transversely to the edge of said first feed roller, means for moving said plate to present the cutting edge of said knife blade at different angles with respect to the tape as it passes around said first feed roller and over the cutting` edge of said cutting blade, means for moving and adjusting said plate in different angular positions, an arm pivotally mounted on said plate and having a knife thereon coperative with the knife on said plate, means for moving said arm on its pivot to shear the tape, and a spring operative on said arm to insure the Jroper shearing engagement between the knives, substantially as described.
24:. rl`he combination in a tape afxing machine, of a base, a supporting arm thereon, a feed roller on said arm, a second feed roller adjacent said first feed roller, means for guiding tape around said first feed roller and between it and the second feed roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said arm and having a knife blade secured thereto, said knife blade extending transversely to the edge of said first feed roller, means for moving said plate to present the cutting edge of said knife blade at different angles with respect to the tape as it passes around said first feed roller and over the cutting edge of said cutting blade, means for moving and adjusting said plate in different angular positions, an arm pivotally mounted on said plate and having a knife thereon cooperative with the knife on said plate, means for moving said a feed roller on said arm, a second feed f roller adjacent said first feed roller, means for guiding tape around said first feed roller and between it and the second feed roller, a plate pivotally mounted on said arm and having a knife blade secured thereto said knife blade extending transversely to the edge of said first feed roller, means for mov` ing said plate to present the cutting edge of said knife blade at different angles with respect to the tape as it passes around said first feed roller and over the cutting edge of said cutting blade, means for moving and adjusting said plate in different angular positions, an arm pivotally mounted on said plate and having a knife thereon coperative with the knife on said plate, means for moving said arm on its pivot to shear the tape, a graduated plate supported by said arm, a link pivoted to said pivoted plate and having a slot and a pointer, an adjusting screw extending through saidslot and secured within said plate whereby the link may be moved to bring the pointer into register with the graduations on said plate and tightened to secure the pivoted plate in position, substantially as described.
26. The combination in a tape aflixing machine, of a base, an arm secured thereto, a
feed roller pivoted on saidarm, a second feed roller coperative with said `first feed' roller, a plate pivoted on said arm and having a cutting blade secured 'thereto and extending transversely to the tape as it passes around said first feed roller and between the feed rollers, an arm pivoted on 'said pivoted plate and having a knife coperative with said first knife, said arm having a slot in its free end, an extension on said pivoted plate having portions forming a guide way, a rod slidable within said guide way, means extending through said slot in the arm and into said rod whereby the arm is moved when said rod is slid, means for actuating said rod to move the said arm, and means for securing the pivoted plate in different positions, substantially as described.
27. The combination in a tape affixing machine, of a base, a supporting arm mounted on the base and having its free end forked,
a shaft mounted in said forked end, a feed roller mounted on said shaft and rotatable within the space formed by said forked end,-
a second feed roller mounted below the said first feed roller, means for moving the said second feed roller toward and from the first feed roller, a tape guide substantially following the contour of the first feed roller, a work plate mounted above said base, a lever pivotally supported by the forked end of the arm and having a knife blade secured thereto, said knife blade being adjacent 'the said first feed roller and at a distance from the bite of said feed rollers, said work plate having an extension, the outer edge of which is substantially the same distance from the bite of the feed rollers as is the said blade, an arm pivotally mounted on said pivoted plate and having a knife coperative with a knife on said blade, means for actuating said arm to sever the tape, and means for securing` the pivoted plate in different positions whereby the tape may be cut at different angles, substantially as described.
28. The combination in a tape aiiiXing machine, of a base, a supporting arm mounted on. the base, a feed roller mounted on said arm, a second feed roller mounted belowr the said first feed roller, means for moving the said second feed roller toward and from the first feed roller, a tape guide substantially following the contour of the first feed roller, a work plate mounted above said base, a lever pivotally supported by the arm and having a knife blade secured thereto, said knife blade being adjacent the said first feed roller and at a distance from the bite of said feed rollers, said work plate having an extension, the outer edge of which is substantially the same distance from the bite of the feed rollers as is the said blade, an arm pivotally mounted on said pivoted plate and having a knife coperative with a knife on said blade, means for actuating said arm to sever the tape, and means for securing the pivoted plate in diEerent positions whereby the tape may be cut at different angles, substantially as described.
