IMPROVEM ENT IN GLOBE-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,8-48, dated February 2 0, 187:2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI THAYER, of Worcester, in the State ot' Massachusetts, have inl venteda new and useful Improvementin Globe- Valves for discharging or conducting uids from reservoirs and for regulating` or graduating the ilow ot' the same and that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specitieation, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same Fig. 3, asection transversely through the center.
The invention consists in constructing the valve-cock or faucet in two Sections, the lower one provided with and carrying the valve so that the opening and closing and regulating ot' the iiow ot' the fluids are secured by turning the lower section in the direction required for the purpose.
A and B, Fig. 2, represent two sections of hollow cylinders or pipes. The upper end of A is provided with screw-threads d, or other suitable device to secure it to the supply-pipe reservoir or other receptacle of the liuid, and its lower part with Screw-threads b to work easily in corresponding threads in section B. rlhese screw-threads may be of any size or pitch desired to facilitate the movement of section B in opening and closing the valve. The
lower end should have sufficient surface to secure a close connection with thevalVe without cutting or abrading it. The opening in section B at and below the valve c must be larger than in A, so as to permit an easy discharge ot' the tluid, and prevent a rebound or backward pressure through the screw-threads unitin g the two sections A and B. The whole Section B may be so enlarged as to allow the arms a a and the valve cto be put into position from below; but the better construction is a hollow globe containing the valve, as shown in the drawing.
For economy in manufacture the globe should be either spherical or spheroidal, though with greater c oSt it maybe made square or polygonal. The valve c is secured to the arms at their junction by the pin p.
This valve may be made of rubber, leather, Soft metal, or other suitable material, and should have beneath it a metallic washer to revolve on the arms a a', so as to prevent its wearing or abrasion in opening and closin What I claim as my invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
