IMPROVEMENT IN COLLARS FOR SHEET-METAL VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,837, dated February 20, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Collars for Sheet-Metal Vessels, invented by JACOB M. PATTERSON, of Woodhury, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey.
My invention relates to the annular collars stamped or formed up each of a single piece of sheet-metal, to be afterward seamed and soldered fast, respectively, to the bodies of sheet-metal vessels; and consists in constructin g the upright flange, which forms the mouth of the collar, with a slightly inward taper, in combination with an inside bead produced by tnrnin g inward the upper edge of said slightly-tapered flange; the object of my invention bcin g to adapt the mouth of the collar for the reception of the cover or lid around over its outer side, and to give strength and rigidity to the upper edge of said mouth of the collar, and consequently dispensing with the necessity and expense of making a horizontal projection or flange around the lid or cover.

The collar is formed up out of a single flat circular piece of sheet metal by pressure in suitable dies, which produce, first, the narrow flange a around the outer boundary of the flat horizontal portion 1), whereby it can be readily seamed and soldered to the upper edge of the vessel; and, second, the upright flange c for the reception over it of the lid or cover. It is then taken out of the dies, and the upper edge ofo turned inward by a beading-machine, so as to form the round bead d entirely on the inner side of the said upright flange c, leaving the outer side smooth and even for the reception of the lid or cover.
A circular disk of sheet metal formed up in suitable dies so as to produce around it an outwardflaring flange to slip down tightly around over the flange a, (see dotted lines 6,) will form the cover without the horizontallyprojecting flange heretofore required.
The described collar, either with or without the said lid or cover, is intended to be manufactured and put on sale for the convenience and advantage of manufacturers of lard-cans and other sheet-metal vessels requiring a collar.
I claim as my invention A sheetmetal collar having the upper edge of the upright or mouth flange 0 turned inward to form a round bead, d, entirely on the inner side of said flange, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore'set forth.
