To all whom it may concern:

Hnornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Occum, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Inn proved FillingExhaustion-Detector Mechanism for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention has reference to improve .ments in mechanism for detecting the exhaustion of filling in the shuttle of a loom provided with mechanism to replenish automatically the filling in the running shuttle directly or through substitution of a shuttle having a supply of filling for the running shuttle in which the'supply of fillin has reached the predetermined point of ex ans tion.
- One object of my present invention is to so construct filling exhaustion detecting dein conjunction with means for actuating filling replenishing mechanism that wear of the feeler lock and the actuator for the transmitter is avoided under the normal operation of the feeler.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved feeler and feeler con trolled lock for filling exhaustion detecting mechanisms whereby the exhaustion of the ing from the running shuttlegma proceed to a greater degree than hereto ore in order to avoid undue waste of filling;
Other objects of the'invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the novel means normally to move the feeler lock out of its position under operation of a loom and with a predetermined supply of filling in the running shuttle.
The invention also consists in such other novel-features of construction and combination of .parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claim. As shown herein in its preferred form the improved feeler lock is adapted, when the filling in the running shuttle is reduced or exhausted to a predetermined point or diamsimilar view as taken eter, to constitute a connection between a positively operated actuator and ti'ansmita Well known nature adapted, when brought j into operation, to

Shuttle B is of a known construction to permit of such change of filling carriers A and has the usual slot in its wall to permit the approach of the detector or feeler to the filling on said carrier. As is usual in looms of this general nature the'shuttle B is carried by shuttle box 1) and is moved toward and from the breast beam E in the beating up operation. 1 Y Y Mounted on the breast beam E or to some member appertaining to such beam is the guide tle box D.

Pivotally sustained between the arms 9, 9 of the trai'ismitter slide or movable element 8 is the ieeler lock 18 having the depending blade 19 and the locking tooth 20 of a suitable shape to be engaged at times by a cotiperating actuator operating in a direction to effect, through such engagement, the
movement of the transmitter slide or elev ment 8 in its motion transmitting direction. The actuator preferably used for this pur pose comprises the member 21 having at its upper portion the bent end 22 adapted, at times, to engage the tooth 20 of the feeler lock 18, and its lower end is pivotally mounted on the. fulcrum f of the lever 23 said actuator having the extension 2% which is mounted on said lever 23 for adjustment to increase or decrease the swing of member 21.-

The relation of this move ment of this actuator member 21 and the lay C will however depend somewhat upon the nature of the \ilork to be accomplished by the transmitter mechanism and also to the particular means for efl'ecting movement of the feeler lock 18 to swing its tooth 20 out of the path of the actuator member.
The feeler used in this improved apparatus is such that it is interposed between and, at times, is to some extent, independent of the actuator engaging means or locking member 18 and of the filling in the loom shuttle. At the same time the teeler of pre ferred construction is always inposition to I pivot the arm 28 overbalanced to swing toward the stop lip 27 and having at its upper end the feeler blade 30; having the head 31. To further assist in swinging this arm 28 toward the stop lip 27 1 may employ the spring 29. lVith this construction it will be seen that by the bearing of the blade 19 of locking member 18 against the feeler head 31 the downward swingingof the toothed or free end of member 18 is limited by the feeler and that a slight movement of the feeler toward the breast beam E results in the swinging upward of such free end or" member 18 to carry its tooth 20 out of the way of the actuator.
The feeler blade 30 is of a nature to be received through any usual opening or slot in the shuttle box and the corresponding opening in the wall of the shuttle B whereby said feeler blade 30 may at times feel-against the filling in the shuttle. That-is, in the movement of the lay 0 toward the breast beam E, the shuttle being then momentarily in shuttle box D, the filling in the shuttle may strike the feeler blade '30 and the movement of such feeler blade as a result of contact with such filling will depend to a large degree upon the amount or diameter of the filling then in the shuttle. Such degree of movement of the feeler being of course trans mitted by its head 31 to the blade 19 of locking member 18 to effect suitable swinging movement of said member.
In the beating up movement of the lay the lever follows the periphery of cam 25 to the small diameter of said cam to permit the actuator member 21 to swing in a retractive ornon-active direction relative to the tooth 20 of lock member 18 and said member 18 is limited in its movement to follow end 22 01' said actuator member 21 by the coiiperation of its blade 19 with the teeler so that while the lock member 18, at this time, is in position to have its tooth 20 engaged by the end 22 of actuator 21 on the forward or working stroke of said ac-. tuator no wearing riding action occursbetween the parts 18, 20 and 22, with suitable adjustment of the actuator 21 relative to the lever 23 and the cam 25 the end 22 of the actuator 21 will not necessarily move backward, in its non-active direction, be-
yond the point at which it may engage with the tooth 20M? lock member 18. That is to say that during the greater portion of the beating up and return movement of the lay these parts 18, 20 and 22 will be in engagement but will be at rest.
Under normal conditions of the filling in the shuttle, on the movement of the lay toward the breast beam and before the cam 25 aetuates lever 23, the tceler 30 will meet the filling in tee shuttle and by such filling will Owing to the fact that the-actuator is normally in engagement with the transmit- 1 position 'ogt'lengagement ting mechanism, by means of lock member 18 and its tooth 20, and that but a slight movement of blade 19 is necessary tomove member 18 out of such position of engagement it is practicable to so adjust this device that almost the entire filling in the shuttle may become exhausted before the transmitting mechanism is brought into action to operate the filling replenishing means. I

On the ot er hand a very slight degree of exhaustion of filling beyond th e'point at which the'member 18 is inovedlout of position of engagement of its tooth 20 will result in such reduced movement or projection of the feeler 30 by the filling that its head 31 will not actuate blade 19 of lock member 18 sufficiently to swing tooth 20 out of engagement with the end or member 22 of actuator 21 and hence'the move ment of said actuator 21; through lever 23 and cam 25 will cause the movement of lock member 18 and the transmitter slide 8 to which said lock member 18 is connected, to be shifted in its guide whereupon lever 11 is operated and the operation of said lever is transmitted to any wellknown mechanism for effecting the replenishing of fill-' ing in the running shuttle or the substitution for the shuttle fromrwhich the filling has been used to the predetermined point.
WVhile I-have herein disclosed a specific construction of my improvement I do not intend thereby-to limit my invention except as herein claimed.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersIatent- A detector mechanism of the nature described, comprising a tran mitter means having a 'slide, a locking ook pivotally mounted on a member of said slide and having a depending blade, a pivoted actuator arm having an upper-hook engaging end normally in non-riding sustaining relation to said hook, a feeler arm pivotally mount- ;ed and having a feeler blade adapted to be controlled by contact with Ifilling in a shuttle and in turn to control said locking book by direct contact with its blade.
