" oHAn nsMnLoHIonI, OF STA MBAU GHpMICI-IIGAN. F 9
To allwkom it mayconcern: I
Be' it known that I, Gi-r-AnLnsMELoHIoRI,
citizen of'the United States, residing at Stambauglnin the county of Iron and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Funnels and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of-theinvention,
suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. I i i This invention relates to new and useful improvements in funnels and theprincipal object of theinve'ntion is to provide a funnel having a vent to carry off the compressed of avessel' when the the vessel being filled has reached its full capacity without danger of wasting any of the liquid.
7 Still another object of the invention is "minates in a valve seat 3, formed by an outto provide a novel means for mounting the lever controlling the operation of the valve.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe novel combination and, arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figurel is vertical sectional view through a funnel constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail side elevation of the lever for controlling the valve.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main body of the funnel comprising the frusto-conical hollow member having formed at its reduced end, the stem 2. The lower end of this stem terturned flange and the upper end of the body 1 is provided with a bead 4. A suitable handle 5 is secured to the body for the con venient handling of the device and surrounding the stem 2 at a point a little above the Specification of Letters iateiiti Patentd Aug, 21, ""Appncation filed October 22, 1915. seriainatasao; 3 i
valve seat 8 'isa rubber bushing 6 formed of a relatively soft rubber andprovided at its .upperend with the bead 7. Thisbushing tapers as shown to conform to the shape of the stem 'and is adapted to; prevent the escape of theliquid between the stem and thefilling spout ofthe-vessel in which the device is used. f Formed at the extreme lowerend of the tube orstem 2 is an opening 8 in which the lower end of the vent tube' 9 is secured.
This vent tube extends upwardly and isbent angularly as'fat -10gto conform {to the shape of the-body =1 andis secured at 11 tothe body near its upper edge.
In order to enable' 'the user tomovethe funnel without wasting any of the contents there is securedto thebody l'near its upper edge at a point diametrically opposite the point 11 at which the tube 10 is secured a suitable U-shaped staple 12. This staple 12 projects inwardly and forms a bearing for the handle bywhich the valve is controlled which comprises the loop 13 one end of which. is extended as at 14 and this extended portion is bent back upon itselfat 15 and the bent back portion is extended as at 16 p and forms a loop 17. The extended portions 14 and 16 together with the bight portion 15 forms a handle or thumb piece which pro:
jects beyond the side wall of the funnel and the loops 13 and 17 form pivots on the bight portion of the staple 12 for supporting the thumb piece. The end of the loop 12 opposite the portion 16 is extended to form a lever 18 which terminates in an eye 19 and extending through the eye 19 is the bight portion of an eye 20 formed at the upper end of the rod 21, the lower end of which 95 is screw threaded as at 22 to receive the nut 23 which limits the downward movement that in use, the funnel is placed in the vessel in the usual manner, and the bushing 6 will engage the sidewalls of the filling spout.
The user then pours the liquid into the fun- 11 0 nel and as the vessel fills, it will be noted that the air rising to the top of the vessel 4 It will be apparent from the foregoing I I will pass out through the vent tube; 9, thereby avoiding the possibility of wasting the liquid around the I point where s the Y funnel extends into the filling spout. Should the V vessel become full so that a certain amount ofliquid will beleft standing in the funnel,
the user will then press upon the thumb piece,
, thus moving the arm 18 upwardly andexerting pull on the link 21 so that the valve will'b'e drawn into engagement with the. seat 3 and the funnel may then be lifted from a the vessel without danger, of spilling or .will fall withinthe spirit and scope of the appended claim; I What is claimed is:/-
funnelcomprising a body, a stem formed on the body and having-its end flared I qopies- .or this patent; may be''obtaiimci for to form a valve seat, a staple secured to the inner'face of the body adjacent its upper end, a wire having one end looped about the staple and being bent upon itself in spaced relation and disposed over the body and looped about the staple to form a handle, one end of said wire after forming one of the loops being extended forwardly and bent to form an arm, said arm having its free end disposed over the stem and bent to form an eye, a rod pivoted to said eye extending through the stem and screw threaded, an oval shaped valve located on the rod and adapted to move into engagement with the valve seat by said handle, and a nut threaded to the rod for adjustably supporting the valvethereon. v V
In testimony whereof afiix my signature ii -presence of two witnesses.
