Description
FBAECIS HARLD SYEICE, GF BUBIS, PENNSYLVANIA, .QSSEGNGE GE' NE-ELE` TG EPWED A. EUBGOON, OF DUBOIS, PENNSYLVANI..
SPBNG BATTERY-CLIP.
Appli' iton filed Bccembe'r 3G, i216. Serial No. 359,33.
Sinnen. a citizen ot the United States, resid ing at Dubois, in the county Clear-held,
State olf Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Spring-liattery-Clip; and l do.
hereby declare the 'following to be a t'ull, clear. and exact description ot the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art `to which it appertains to maire and use the same.
'llhe present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in quick y detachable binding` post clips, the object of the invention beingsto provide a device of this charai'i'ter which embodies novel features of consti-notion whereby it can be quickly applied to a binding ,post or removed therefrom, and will produce an excellent electrical connection therewith. Further objects or the invention are to provide a binding'post clip which is coinparatively simple and inonpensive inits construction, which will securely grip a bindingl post so, that it will not jar loose thereon or become accidentally disengaged therefrom, and which can be used to advantage upon 'the terminals oi conducting cables which are employed for connecting a series ort batteries.
TVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel combina.- tions and arrangements of the parts as will more ully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a. full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in Whichz Figure l is a longitudinal. sectional view through a clip constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as applied to a binding' post.- Y
Fig. il a similar view, aken on a plane at right angles to that oi' Fig. l.
3 is a bottom plan view o'l" the clip.
Il is a view similar to Fig. l3 showing a slight modification.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the modified form of clip. I
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following,r description and indi'- cated in all the views of the drawings by the /same reference characters.
Specilically describing the embodii'nei'it of the invention illustrated by liigs. l. 2 and 3 ot the drawing, the numeral l designates a hollow cap which is substantially cj/.flindrical in shape, being` open at one end and closed at the opposite end by an integral head or wall disk if is iitted in the 'cap and locked rigidly in position thereon at a point towardthc `closed end thereof. The ot this disk 3 are slmwn as rece an annular channel i 'formed by a pair oli spaced ribs #which are 'pressed inwardly from the side walls oi' the cap. lt desired. longitudinal slits may be formed in the side walls of vthe cap and arranged at the crimped portions 5 thereof to admit ot' the latter springing' outwardly when inserting the disk 3 in position or'removing it therefrom. This disk is formed with a series of integral and radially projecting larms (i wiich are returned inwardly at. o, and then inclined outwardly toward the open mouth ot the cap., terminating in the opposed jaws 6 which have a substantially 'parallel relation to each other and are preferably corrugated so as to grip and securely engage the threads of a conventional binding 'post 7. in the ved within present instance there are `tour of these arms 6 each provided with a jaw 6b, and thev eK- tremities of the jaws are deected outwardly at 6 to provide a flared mouth to direct the end of the binding post between the jaws when the device is being applied to a binding post. r'fhe conductor or cable 8 has the insulation removed troni the end 8 thereor` which extends through an opening in the closed end 2 of the cap, is threaded through openings 3a in the disk 3. and secured at the top of the disk by clamping,"` wings 9 which are stamped from thel disk and bent up wardly therefrom.
A slight modificatie' is shown Figs. Li
and 5, in which the character 1X designates a hollow cap which ispreterably cylindrical in shape, one end thereof being' open While the other end thereof is closed byV an end wall 2". An annular; series of spring arms 6X are arranged within the hollen cap lx, the upper ends thereof being engaged by screws 1.0 which pass through openings in the walls of the cap and have a threaded engagement with the spring arms, while the lower ends of the spring arms are deflected inwardly toward each otherwid terminate in the corrugated giipping jaar GY. These aws are edaped to engage the threads oi'r' he binding post for the purpose of ierainf ing` the cop in position and establishing an electrical connection iherewih. The con duelor SX passes through en opening in the end well 2 of the oep, the insulation boing removed from the eziteiniy o the Conductor which is divided to lorin four Wires SY, one of the Wires lendng' zio enel] of the springl arme (3K sind heling Wrapped around the corresponding screw l0 so as to he clamped between the arm and the welle of he oop when the screw is tightened.
Hei/'ing thus described the inven sion, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszil. A battery clip ino riding e, hollow een hevii'lg en open end and a closed end, e viherel series of spring arms arranged Jhin the carp and projf: 'ng outwardly Ward the open ond thereoi, seid springs ninating inwardly deflected Spring Je 'as arranged for oopei'ntion Willi each other to grip e binding post, and e .fiexible conductor having the end thereof carried through the closed. end of the oep Kind oonneol-ed to the sp1-ingV arms.
2. A battery clip inc hidinlsg` :i hollow een having an open end and e closed end, a disk itted Within the hollow cap und fixed therein al", a point toward the Closed end thereof, e peripheral series of spring :unis carried by the disl and projieoting toward he open end of the oep, said :mns terminal;- ing in inwardly deleeed spring jews which are errenged to e binding posg, and n flexible conductor hoving'the end hereof carried through the closed end of the cap and connected to the disk.
3. A hettery'olip inelndingia hollow cap inning an. open end and a closed end, e; disk fitted Within the oep and secured 'fherein toward the closed end thereof, said disk being formed with a series of integral radial arms which are returned inwardly and deflected outwardly toward the open lend of the cap, seid arms terminating in spring jewserranged for cooperation with each other and io grip a binding' posi, and e' flexible oonductor having the end thereon?l carried through the closed end of the cap and secured to the disk.
Ll. A battery clipinelndng a. hollow can having an open end and "e Closed end, 4l-he side Wells of the disk being pressed lnwerclly to provide :i pair of spaced annular ribs, e disk inserted .fihin the cap end seated between the ennuie-r ribs thereof` seid disk being formed with n series of radial mns which are returned inwardly and ex tended outwerdlv toward the open end of the cap, said arms terminating in spring jaws arranged for cooperation with each other togrip a loindn're` post, and :L flexible Conductor having the end thereof carried through the closed end of the cap and eonneeted to the disk.
In testimony whereof l have signed my naine to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
