FRANCIS BRACKNEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-HEATER- BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,767, dated February 20, 187'?.
ving in, together with its other features, hereinafter enumerated, a number of cast-iron sections, each one entire, complete, and distinct in itself, the whole, however, of which, when ,tted and joined together, only .making up and composing the one sectional boiler. The different sections are connected by pipes, having threads cut upon them, which screw into the sections and hold them together. The fire-box or furnace is placed in the center of the boiler; and tubes running therefrom each way into smoke-chambers near the end of the boiler return thence into a flue, of circular or other shape, which runs completely through theboiler at its center, from front to back. The smokeconnection is made to the front or back of the boiler by' means of a T-pipe, so placed that an opening is preserved through it and the center iue, with which it connects. A lifting door, m, on a hinge, covers the end of the T-connection, so attached with other mechanism as to be operated upon by the steam-pressure and to regulate the draught.
. It willbe seen that, as each section is areceptacle for Water and a steam-generator independently of all others, the joints between the same are not exposed to the action of the lire; neither are there any joints at which leakage can possibly ensue, except at the connecting-pipes, the prevention of which at these points is merely a matter of ordinary workmanlike skill.
In the further description of my invention which follows, due reference must be had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Y Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig-3 is a vertical transverse section through the fire-box on line WX. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through line XY.
Similar letters of referenceindicate similar parts of my invention.
A A represent the center or furnace sections. A A are plain sections. A A are the smokechamb er sections. Each section is entire in itself', and no steam -joints whatever are required,
except at the point of attachment, a. The joints y at b are only of such character as may be found necessary to render them smoke-tight. The pipes Gr have threads cut upon. them at each end, the end g having a longer thread than at g. The object of this difference in the length of the threads is to facilitate the Work of connecting the sections. Were the threads not so arranged, when the faces b b are brought together as a joint, the pipes could not be inserted. As it is, the end g, upon which is a locknut, g, now run back, is screwed into and l through the section far enough to allow the end g. to enter the opposite hole in the other section. The pipe is then screwed into the latter section, a sufficient part of its length still remaining in the other, and the lock-nut g brought to its proper place against the side of the section. If desired, tie-bolts h may be run through these pipes, extending through all the sections, to assist, if necessary, in thesecuring of the boiler-sections, or for other purposes. B B represent the lower series of tubes,
-which run from the furnace C to the smokechambers D D. E E are the upper or return tubes, extending into and between the smokechambers D D and the smoke-flue F. By the position of the furnace C in the center of the boiler, and the tubes running each way to the smoke-chambers, and returning thence in to the smoke ilue, a double radiating draught is caused. The smoke-chambers D D are formed within the sections Al A,andA the smoke-flue F within those of A A, one-half being in each. The flue F extends entirely through the boiler from front to back, its cleaning out being thereby facilitated. The sections A A and A A', next to them, are somewhat deeper than the others, that ample height under theY grate-bars c may be had. Those part-s, H, of the sections wherein the pipes Gr are inserted are set back from the faces b, at which the sections join, to allow for the insertion of the pipes. K K are cleaning-out iues, reaching into the smokechambers D D. To the center due F I attach, at either the front or back of the boiler, a T
smoke-connection, L, and at the other side of the boiler a eap, M, over the opening. The draught-door is represented by m.
The f'eed of water can be maintained by any suitable means whereby all the sections may be equally supplied, and any ordinary method adopted for ascertaining the pressure therein.
The pressure will' liever be high, this appameans are adopted for the cleaning` out of the smoke-tubes and flues.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of the center flue F, extending transversely completely through the boiler, with the double series of return-fines E E, when arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
2. In 10W-pressure steam-'heating` boilers, an improvement consisting in a furnace, O, placed midway of thefront elevation, as shownin Figs. l and 2, and as used in connection with the ldouble series of direct-acting flues B B, the
double series of return-fines E E, and the center flue F, substantially as set forth.
3. A counter recess, formed Vby the setting` back of the parts H in the adjoining;` faces of any two of the separate sections, substantially as set forth, for the purpose speeited.
