COMBINED OUTLET-BOX. AND FIXTURE.
specification 0! Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed July 28, 1916. Serial No. 111,775.
in combined outlet boxes and fixtures and has for its object to provide a. means for supporting a fixture on an outlet box whereby parts now commonly used are dispensed with and the number of parts usd is rednced.
The following is a description of an embodiment of my invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in
' which-- 20 Figure 1 shows a vertical section of an embodiment of my invention.
Fig, 2 is a bottom view of the cover with part of the insulating flan broken away.
, Fig.3 shows u. section 0 a modification. g5 Fig. 4 shows a side elevation of the insert "said modification;
' Referring more particularl to the draw ings, 1*is an outlet box of ordinary form having .lu'gs 2 and ordinary knoc'lrrout. holes to B and secured'to a beam by screws 4:. Such .b' OS h ret fore have/been provided with g v, g oon'nectors on" whichhi oys. aro' ,the fixture be.---.'
studs oo- I msula9n 1- mg screw-threaded t' .thexonterend of the as hicks In ordertd'dogaway with the nocessi y of- ,the studs, ;oonnectors and f hickeys lprovideu'platoo having a metallic insert 6 surropndodb) molded insulatmaterial 'hwhieh extends to the edge of the box and isthere provided -withclongated holes 8, through-. which extend screws 8"-en-- aging the lug s' igand holding the plate to t 0 box so as to form a cover therefor. The
insert is rovided with a. screw-threaded hole 9 which is tapered so as to be slightly larger at its outorend'. In one form the in cart is pro qi ed with laterahprojections 10 and elongate "lateral extensions 11 which prevent the inseit'from turning relatively to the molded-insulation. The projections ll are rovided' at -their endswith recesses whic h .cs 8 but vseparated therefrom so that no portion of the insert is in metallic contact '55 with the screws 8'- passing through the holes 8. These ertongions 11 reinforce the moldfo'rm proi'ections-m embracing the ed insulation across the center and at the points 8 where the holding screws 8 pass through.
Into the. topped hole 9 is screwed the threaded pipe l3 of a fixture through which ass electric conductors 14 entering the outet box throu h the knock-out holes 8.
From the orcgoing it will be seen that the fixture is secured to the outlet box by the use of a single composite member and 18 thereby insulated from the outlet box so as to meet underwriters requirements.
Figs 3 and 4 show a modification in which 6' is an insert formed with two end flanges 15, the body bein provided with re.- dial-ridges 1-6. The b y: of the insert is embedded in insulation'moldcd upon the insert under pressu're, the ridges 16 acting as anchors to prevent relative notation,
W'hile various kinds of insulation may be used for the insulation surrounding thetin- -sert. I prefer to use whatis linown inthetrade ,as gummon, the same being a very hard, strong," waterproof and fireproof insusaid metallic portion having a lateral extension embedded in said insulating material and spaced apart from said securing means.
2. The combination of an outlet-box-body, a cover com osed of a metallic portion having a centre 1y locatedtappedhole and a letmaterial insulating said inetallicportion from said box-body, and securing means passing through said rim and engaging and box-- body, said metallic portion havintgmradial pro ections embedded in said insula f g material and spaced apart from said securing moons.
3. The combination of anoutlet-box-body, a cover composed of a m taglhc portion having a centrallydocat edf sppedhole and a a ys dmg em fwlflnwsiieeflh many extending rim comprising-insulating embracing ing-materinl insulating said metallic portion from said box-body, and screws passing through said rim and engaging said boxbody, said metallic portion having extensions embedded in said insulating material said vscrews but spaced apart therefrom.
,4. The combination of an outlet-bcx-body,
a cover composed of a metallic portion l1av-.
ing a centrally located tapped hole and a laterally extending rim comprising insulating material insulatin said metallic portion 'from said boX- Ody, and securing means passin t-hrou b said rim and engaging said box-Ody, t e face portion of said rim extending beyond the periphery of its rear portion and the wall of said box, said metallic ortion havin a lateral extension embeddet in said insu ating material and spaced apart from said securing means JAMES F. GOGGIN.
