REGULATING DEVICE FOR GAS-CONDUITS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUs'rAr DALiiN, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Skarsatra, Lidingon, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulating Devices for Gas- Conduits, of which the following is a specification.
Use heretofore has been made of a porous material, with means for compressing an expanding the same, to regulate the flow of gas through a conduit to its destination, as,
the flasher of a light signal apparatus. Even at best, when the mass of regulating material is first placed in use, the amount of possible regulation due to compression and release of compression of the porous material is limited but after a mass of the same has been in use for a time and has been subjected to successive compressions it becomes compact and hard so that finally the variations caused in its density or compactness by compression and release of compression become so small that the mass of material loses its efiiciency and should be removed and replaced by a fresh mass. The removal of such mass heretofore has been tedious and more or less expensive. One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a novel means for the removal of the mass of porous or fibrous material from the chamber of the gas conduit in Other objects and advantages of my invention will be specifically pointed out in the description thereof which follows or will be apparent from such description.
It will be understood that my invention is capable of .embodiment in various forms other than that which is illustrated audit is to, be understood thatI desire and intend to include as my lIIVGDtlOIl' all of the various embodiments thereof which .fall within the scope of-the specification and claims.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing or equivalent part provided with a screw-threaded opening 2 extending therethrough. 3 designates a screw-threaded plug (or 1t may be the end of a pipe) prov ded with a reduced screw-threaded port1on 1 in engagement with one end portion of the internal screw-threaded part of the casing 1. The plug 3 is shouldered as indicated at 5 and is provided with a recess havlng a packing material 6 therein which is adapted to contact with the opposing end of the casing 1. The plug 3 is provided with a longitudinally extending opening 10 which is enlarged as indicated at 11 for the reception of the mass 12 of porous or fibrous material which may consist of asbestos fiber. 12 rests upon or against a washer 15 provided with a relatively large number of perforations, as indicated at 16. The outer ed es of said washer rest upon the shoulder 1 formed between the enlarged portion 11 and the smaller portion 10 of the opening through the plug 3.
2O designates a coiled wire which is embedded within and surrounded by the mass of material'12. 21 designates a pin whic extends through a central perforation in the washer 15 said pin being provided with a head 22 which is adapted to rest against the outer side of the said washer as shown in Fig. 1. The other end of the pin extends into an opening 23 formedjn the inner end of an adjusting screw 25. The inner end of the said screw is reduced in size as shown at 26 and is screw-threaded. It is also split for a short distance as indicated at 27 Said reduced portion 26 is provided with a binding nut 28 which, .during the insertion of the end of the pin 21 into the opening 23, is situated adjacent to the shoulder 29. However, after the end of the pin has been inserted as shown the said binding nut is screwed forwardly upon the reduced screwthreaded portion 26 into substantially the position shown in Fig. 1 so that it will operate to bind and hold the end of the pin firmly in positio The inner end of the adjusting screw a washer 30 which is supported upon the pin 21.. The washer 30 is provided with a notch 31 25 is adapted to restgagainst and guided washer bears against the end of the mass of I for a purpose which will be hereinafter referred to.
The adjusting screw 25 has screw-threaded engagement with a screw-threaded opening 32 in the plug 33 which is provided with a reduced screw-threaded portion 34 in engagement with the internal screw-threads 2 of the casing 1. The inner end of the plug 33 faces or opposes the inner end of the plug 3. The plug 33 also is provided with an annular groove in which is placed packing material 35 which is in contact With the opposing end of the casing 1. By turning the adjusting screw 25 in one direction or the other it may be caused to move inwardly or outwardly. When moved inwardly it causes a compression of the porous mass 12 as well as a compression of the coiled spring 20. When screwed in the opposite direction to move the same outwardly it permits expansion of the said mass and the spring 20.
Before adjusting the screw 25 it is necessary to remove the cap 40 which covers and conceals the outer end of the adjusting screw and is provided for the purpose of preventing the escape of any gas which might pass between the adjusting screw 25 and the screw-threads at 32.
The plu 33 is provided with a chamber 41 which aces or opposes the chamber 11. The inner ends of the plugs 3 and 33 are spaced from each other and thus permit the gas which enters from the gas supply pipe 42 to have, as far as possible, free access to the porous mass 12. The gas passes through the porous mass and throughthe openin s 16 in the washer 15 and thence through t e opening 10 forwardly to its destination.
It may happen that the washer 30 will be moved forward gradually by the adjustment of the screw 25 until it passes into the enlarged opening or chamber 11 formed in the inner end of -the plug 3. For this reason the notch 31 is provided in order that the gas may more readily pass beyond the said washer to and into the porous mass 12. It is apparent that by the employment of a construction such as I have illustrated and which embodies the principle of my invention the porous mass together with the washers 15 and 30 may be readily removed merely by unscrewing and removing the plug 33. The removal of'the said plug necessarily causes removal of the adjusting screw 25 together with the pin 21 attached thereto and in view of the fact that the washer 15 is held upon the said pin by the head 22 thereof it is clear that not, only the said washer but the mass of material12 must-also be removed. After having been removed the binding nut 28 may be screwed toward the shoulder 29 after which the'pin 21 may be removed and the mass '12 then removed from the pin and a new or with the conduit fresh mass placed thereon. The pin .may then be again secured to the inner end of the adjusting screw 25 and the whole replaced within the regulating chamber as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim 1. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination porous material situated in a chamber constituting a part of the conduit with means for varying the compactness of said mass, and means having positive connection with the chamber. 1
2. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a mass of with a conduit of a mass of porous material situated in a chamber constituting a part of the conduit passage-way means for varying the compactness of said mass and means having positive connection with the said means and with the said mass whereby when the first-named means is removed from the said chamber said mass is also removed.
3. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a mass of porous material situated in a chamber constituting a part of the passage-way of said conduit, a washer situated in said chamber against which said mass rests, an adjusting device for adjusting the compactness of said mass, and a headed pin having connection with said adjusting device and extending through the said mass and through the said washer, the head of the against the outer side of said washer whereby by removal of said adjusting device the said in and mass are also removed from said c amber.
4. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a mass of material in a chamber constituting a part of assage-way and o crating to control the ow of fluid through such conduit, a washer in one end of said chamber against which the said mass rests, said washer being provided with a 'pluralit of perforations'an adjustable device pro ecting into the said chamber and being removab 6 therefrom, said device bearing a ainst a washer seated against the portion 0 said mass opposite the first-named washer, and a p1n having connection with said adjustable device and extending through the saidwashers and the said mass, the head thereof being adapted to be seated against the outer side ofthe first-named washer whereby when said pin bearing the said adjusting device is removed the said pm, washers and mass are simultaneously removed from the chamber.
5. In a regulating device for, controlling memes the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a mass of material situated in a chamber constituting a part of the conduit passage-way, and bein adapted to regulate the passage of a flui through such conduit, a removable, adjustable screw extending into the said chamber and bearing against one end portion of said mass, and by adjustment adapted to compress and release from compression the said mass, said screw being provided with a pin detachably connected thereto which pin is connected with the said mass whereby when the said screw and pin are removed the mass is simultaneously Withdrawn from the said chamber.
6. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a mass of porous material situated in a chamber constituting a part of the conduit passage-way and adapted to regulate the flow of fluid therethrough, a removable, adjustable screw the inner end of which is reduced and is screw-threaded and is provided with a longitudinally extending hole and is split, a binding nut upon said screw-threaded reduced end portion, a pin extending through the said porous mass the outer end of said pin being provided with a head whereby the said pin cannot be drawn forwardly through the said mass and the inner end thereof extending into the hole in the reduced end portion of the said adjustable screw and being clamped and bound therein by the said binding screw whereby when the said adjusting screw is removed the said mass is simultaneously withdrawn from the said chamber.
7. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the

8. In a regulating device for controlling the flow of a fluid through a conduit, the combination with a conduit of a compressible mass situated in the said conduit and through which a gaseous fluid is adapted to flow, adjustable means projecting into the said conduit for compressing the said mass to vary the compactness thereof and there by control the rate of flow of the said fluid therethrough, a device having detachable connection with the said adjustable means andwith the said mass and means whereby the said adjustable device may be removed from the said conduit together with the device having detachable connection therewith whereby the said mass is simultaneously removed from said conduit.
