Description

A. HLTAIT, Jr. Improvement in Buiten-haie Attachment for Sewing Machines. No.1`23,742. PatentenFeb.13,1872;1
` eend above the foot-plate.
UNITED STATEs AUGUSTUS H. TAIT, JR., OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLEVATTACHMENTS FOR SEWINGMACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,742, dated February 13, 1872.
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsrUsiH. TAIT, Jr.,
. of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson the purpose of stitching button-holes by means of an upright oscillating link or slotted rod, having the slot so curved at the upper part as to give a vibrating motion of about threeeighths of an inch to a spur attached to the lower end of the link, which traverses across the threads of two needles which do not rotate. The spur passes across the threads Whenthe needles commence to descend and holds the threads on one side during the descent in order to form a loop, and the spur traverses back again to the other side, clear of the threads as the points of the needles as- The center-pin on which the link works is attached io a standard which is soldered upright on the foot-plate or presser-foot. The oscillating motion is given to the link by the ascent and descent of the pin attached to the upright needle-bar, which pin works perpendicularly in the slot. The false needle which traverses through the open slit ofthe button-hole passes through a short tube or guide open in front upon which the cloth is turned round when one side of the button-hole is stitched, so as to stitch the other side.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side view o f the attachments. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the attachment in position ready for work.
A represents the link or slotted rod. a. is the spur attached to the lower end of the link. Bis the standard attached to thefoot-plate or presser-foot. b is the short tube or guide through which the false needle works. C is the foot-plate or presser-foot.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the presser-foot C, of the link or slotted rod A, spur a, standard B and guide b, when arranged and operating with the two needles, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of December, 1871. I
' AUGUSTUS H. TAIT, JR.
