CAR-ROOF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed January 31, 1914. Serial No. 815,741.
roof boards. are covered with metallic weather-proofing sheets flexibly connected to each other.
It is the object of the present invention to provide means for securely attaching the weather-proofing sheets to the board structure and at the same time permitting freedom of adjustment to compensate for the weaving and flexing of the car frame.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a transverse cross section through a portion of the car roof to which my improvement is applied;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section through the securing bolt.
A is the board sheathing of a wooden car roof, which is secured to purlins B and carlines C. D are independently adjustable outside metallic weather-proofing sheets which extend from ridge to eaves and are arranged in series having flexible weatherproof Connection with each other. At the ridge these sheets are preferably provided with upstanding flanges E which are weather-proofed by ridge caps F, while at the eaves the sheets extend beyond the side plates of the car and are provided with downturned flanges G.
'Io firmly secure these sheets to the car roof and yet to provide freedom for adjustment, I connect to each of the sheets, preferably centrally thereof and adJacent to the side plate of the roof frame, a bolt or pivot member II, and this, as shown, engages a raised boss I upon the sheet and 13 secured thereto by a riveted head J. Below the sheet the bolt is of cylindrical form and passes through an aperture in the board A and preferablv also through an alined aperture in a bracket K suitably secured, as by attachment to the side plate F, by bolts L. The bolt II is also preferably provided with a shoulder M and a nut N engaging a threaded shank beyond this shoulder, by which the nut may be locked without clamping the sheet to prevent the pivotal movement of the bolt.
With the construction as described in use,
each of the sheets D is free to adjust itself about the axis of the pivot II, and by reason of the loose engagement with the adjacent sheets and also at the ridge and eaves, perfect, freedom within certain limits is provided.
What I claim as my invention is,
1. In an outside car roof, the combination of a weather-proofing sheet, a pivot nonrotatively securedto said sheet and depend ing therefrom, and means for securing said pivot to the under roof, said means permitting the limited rotation of said weather proofing sheet.
2. In an outside car roof, the combination of a weather-proofing sheet extending from ridge to eaves, a pin secured centrally and non-rotatively to said sheet and depending therefrom, and a bearing upon the under roof in which said pin is rotatively secured.
3. In an outside car roof, the combination of a weather-proofing sheet having a boss formed thereon, a pin non-rotatively secured to said boss and depending therefrom, a supporting board roof for said sheet through which said pin passes, and securing means between said pin and roofper mitting rotative movement.
4. In an outside car roof, the combination with a weather-proofing sheet having a boss formed thereon, of a pivot member secured to said boss and depending therefrom, a supporting board roof for said sheet and a bracket beneath said board roof, said board roof and bracket having alined apertures therethrough and said pivot member extending through said aper-- tures, the portion of said pivot member able therewith, and detachable means for extending through said bracket being of resecuring the pivot to the under roof. 10 duced size, and a nut engaging said re- In testimony whereof I afliX my signaduced sized portion loosely securing said ture in presence of two witnesses.
