' My invention. relates to certain new and useful improvements in life preservers, and reiers particularly to that type in which a body receiving member is employed having buoyant means detachably carried thereby.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a life preserver which will SQP port a person in water for an indefinite period of time; which will to a certain extent protect the bodyof a person when in the water; and Awhich will be of extremely simple construction and occupy but a small amount of space when not in use, thereby making it desirable from every standpoint.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement-of parts, substantially'as described and claimed herein, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention' herein disclosed can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention` constructed according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my invention, the lowerortion of one of y the leg yreceiving members eing in section to more clearly illustrate its construction.
Fig.A 2 isa top plan -vewof the buoyant ring: member detached from the bodyre- "ceiving member, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the buoyant ring member'showing said ring member.
iii.'
a portion of one of the supporting straps and the manner of securing the same with My invention consists essentially in the body receiving member 5 having the leg receiving port1ons`6 and the upper portion 1917. serial No. 161,755.
7 whichiits around the waistl of a person, and the buoyant ring member 8 adapted to loosely encircle the waist and to bedetachably secured to the member 5, by means of the straps 9 secured `to the body'receiving member at 10, and having o their free ends the clasps 1l adapted to engage' the rings 12 secured at intervals around the straps 9 adjustable, ployed intermediate theends of each strap.
Thus it will be seen that to use my device, a person first sees that the straps are all secured to the buoyant member, then steps in the body receiving member, and vthen tightens the belt of the bodyv receiving member in order to prevent the water fro entering the same.
This invention as will Specification of Letters Patent. Ptenfed Aug, 2L 1917 l Application fusa April is,
the member 8 by means of the binding bolts 13. 'To mairev a buckle 14 isomeis be readily' seen gives a person free 'use of their 'limbs and when it is desired to rest the arms, it can be safely done without danits front the enlargement 16v to accommodate any additional weight thrown forward.
It will ofcourse be understood that the` member 5 can be made of any desired material such as rubber, canvas or the like, and that the buoyant'rin'g maybe made of any material such as cork and the like.
What is claimed is: l. A life nation, a buoyant member,
adapted to encircle the body of a person,
a'waterproof body portionof said body -receiving member, a
ger fromjtilting as the ring memberhas at preserver comprising, in combireceiving member, said body recelving memseries of rings. carried by said buoyant member, and clasps on the free ends offsaid straps and engaging said rings, substantially -as described. y
A 2. A life preserzver com nation, a .buoyant member cle the body of a person, an enlargement on the forward part ing any additional weig t lcaused bythe leaning forward of the occupant, a body refceiving meinberndeta @ably secured to said buoyant memb fand lmeans for tightening said-.body receiving member. around the `body or the occupantto-.prevent' the 'entrance of water thereto, substantiallyas described.
therefor for accommodatf roes.l
nient formed on said buoyant member for ac- 10 conimodeting any additional Weight'thrown thereon substantially as describe In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, iu
the county of Milwaukee and State' of Wisy13 consin.
