Be it known that l, JOHN F. STANDISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Winthrop, in the county yof Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in fork-Supports, of
support the lastk with the shoe thereon in a n position opposed to the heel to be attached n and during the attaching operation to subject the heely to considerable pressure which is transmitted through the last to a last support or abutment opposed to the top or crown of the last. It is frequently found that after lasts have been used for a time they have become bro-ken down at one side of the top or crown, so that they no longer present a proper and uniform bearing upon the support to which the crown of the last is opposed in the heeling machine, with the result, that when pressure is applied during the heel attaching operation, there is a marked tendency for the shoe to tilt sidewise, the heel seat of the shoe sliding transversely upon the heel. This tendency becomes particularly emphasized when the heel seat is covered with wet glue and conu sequently quite slippery.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a work support which shall be self-adaptable to the conditions,k presented by the top or crown of the last, to the end that pressure applied therethrough shall-be transmitted in such uniform. manner, over substantially the entire top or crown surface of the last that all tendency for the lshoe to tilt under the heeling pressure may be effectively overcome. To this end, an important feature of the presentinvention consists in a last-contacting or pressure-transmitting element which is mounted upon a jack or support in such manner as to be self-adapt able to the topy or crown surface vof the last bymovement about an axis passing long itu-l dinally through the crown surface of the last. Another important feature of the invention consists in such ypressure-transmit-y ting element adapted to rock about `an axis passing longitudinally through the crown of the last, and members to engage the sides of the last as the last and pressure transmit ting element are brought into pressure relation. These and other features of the present invention will best be made clear from the following description and accompany ing drawings which set forth good practical forms thereof, and wherein the invention is shown as applied to a jack post, it being understood, however, that it may be otherwise employed within the true scope of the invention as defined by the claims.y

Referring to Fig. l: kthe jack post l may be of any appropriate character suitable for use in connection with machines for manufacturing shoes, but in the presentexploitation of the invention, is shown as of the character now common in a type of lheeling machine7 wherein the jack post is provided with means for detachable*connection with a swinging jack post support. Mounted in the lower portion of the jack post l is a block 5 having an upwardlyextending portion 6 loosely mounted on a pin 7 and provided with teeth, by which it may be locked in desired relation with the y jackpost as usual in this type of work supports. dertain features of the present invention, as will hereinafter more fully appear, are well adapted for association with a block, such as 5, capable of being swung or tilted in a plane extending longitudinally of the shoe in order to properly position the parts in a longitudinal plane in conformity with the requirements of the work, but such construction is not always essential.
The present invention contemplates primarily that the work support shall have an element which kshall be self-conformable to the top or crown surface of a last, and that such conformation shall be effective prior to the application of the full pressure transmitted through the last during the heelattaching operation. This feature of the invention is of particular importance in the use of lasts, the tops or crown portions of which have been broken down at one side.
It also has in contemplation, a substantially free lateral or transverse movement of such element to bring the same in proper coactng relation with the topk or crown of the last. As a means to this end, the jack post'is provided with a last bed piece supporting member movable transversely with respect thereto, and carrying a last bed piece which is connected to the last bed piece supporting member for tilting movement about an axis passing through the top or crown portion of the last. ,y Y
In the illustrated form of the invention, the block 5 is provided with a transverselyextending recess 8, preferably undercut as shown by Figs. 1 and 2 at 9, in which slides transversely a block10 preferably having shouldered portions 11 for engagement with the undercut portions 9 of the recess 8, the construction being suoli that the block 10 as will hereafter Amore Afully appear, may have sliding movement transversely of the jack post. The transversely-extending recess 8 is of somewhat greater depth vertically than the shouldered portions 11 of the block 10, the construction being such that the block 10 may have bodily movement toward and `from the bottom of the transversely-extending recess 8 as will be readily apparent.
Secured to the block 10 by suitable means such as the screw 13, is a last bed piece supporting member 12 having a transverse recess 171 to engage the downwardly-extending flanged portions 15 of the block 10, the construction being such that the block 10 and the last bed piece supporting member are i rigidly united. As a meansv to this end, the block 10 is provided withf pins 18, Fig. 4, normally under the influence of springs 19 tending to project the pins upwardly from the top surface of the block 10 and against the upper wall of the transversely-extending recess 8, the construction being such that in the absence offorce tending to move the jack post or block 5 and the last bed piece supporting member in a direction of relative approach, the spring-actu-- ated pins 18 serve to hold said block 10 and its connected last bed piece supporting member in position with the teeth or corrugations 16 and 17 disengaged.
YF rom the construction thus far described,'. it will be apparent that the last bed piece supporting member 12 is movable with substantial freedom in a direction transverse to; the jack post under normal conditions when., the teeth or corrugations 16 and 17 are dis prevent complete engaged; and in order to removal of the last bed piece supporting member from the jack post, a stop is provided to limit such transverse movement.
In the present form of the invention, the stop comprises a pin 2O carried in a suitable recess in the jack post block 5, and having its end portion adapted to engage a recess 21 extending into the last bed piece supporting member, substantially as indicated in Figs. 2 and l. The stop 2O or like device, is provided with means for manual manipulation, which in the present form of the invention, is shown as a hand screw 22 extending through a slot 23 in the block 5, the construction being such that upon raising the stop 2O from its engagement with the slot 21 in the last bed piece supporting member, the latter may be entirely removed from the jack post.

Fromthe construction described, it will bexapparent ythat priorto the application of pressure through the last during the heeling operation, the crown or top portion of the-last maybe properly yseated against the face of the last bed piece, and that the latter will automatically conform its contacting surface with the'top or crown of the last, and that prior to such application of pressure, the last bedv piece supporting member'carrying the last bed piece, may be moved transversely of they jack post into appropriate position as demanded by the work under treatment. The last bed piece supporting member 3a is movable bodily in a transverse direction of the jack post and'to prevent entire withdrawal of the last bed'piece supporting member from its connection with the jack post, there is provided a stop in the form of a pin 40 normally under the influence of aspring 4l, said pin 40 being-adapted to engage a recess 42 in the side of the rcylindrical yportion 34, the construction being such that while the last bed piece supportingmember may be moved freely in atransverse direction with reference to the jack post, it 1s limited in such movement by the'pin and slot 42. In order to .permit ythe last bed piece supporting member to be withdrawn from the jack post, the pin 40 is provided with a hand-piece 43 which projects through a slot 44 of the jack post, wherebythe stop pin 40 may be raised against the actionof the spring 4l andV disengaged from therecess 42 of the last bed piece supporting member. s 1 I The last bed piece supporting member 35 is provided with the side wings 45 and a curved seat 46 for the reception yof the last bed piece 47 the wall of saidrecess 46 and the opposed surface of the lastbed piece 47 beingl formed cylindrical and about an axis passing longitudinally and v,centrally ythrough the face y48 of the last bedpiece 47.
In theform of the last bed piece shown by Fig. 7, a lug 49 is provided which engages a suitable `recess in thecurv'ed recessed face of the last bed piece supporting` member ysubstantially as indicated in b, and
serves as a limiting stop' to the tilting movement of the last bed piece, although such stop is not always essential. s l
The last bed piece 47, like the lastbed piece 27, has a plane or flat face to contact with the top or crown of the lastand may be secured to the lastbedpiece ysupporting z member by suitable means permitting tiltmgmovement of the last bed piece abcutits axis passing centrally and vlongitudmally `through the face thereof. As an appropriate means to this end, the last bed piecesupporting member may be provided with the lugged brackets 50 similar to the lugged brackets 29 heretofore described, and these may be secured in suitable recesses 51 at the ends of the last bed piece supporting member bysuitable means such as the screws 52. Inwardly projecting lugs carried by these brackets extend into the curved recesses 54 at the end portions of the last bed piece, the construction being such that while the lugged brackets 50 maintain the last bed piece in cooperative relation with the last bed piece supporting member, they, in connection with the slots 54, permit the last bed piece to tiltabout its axis extending longitudinally and centrally of the face thereof, and perforce, the top or crown portion of a last engaged by it.
From the construction described,both in the preferred and modified forms of the invention, it will be apparent that the last bed piece by its capacity for tilting movement about a center passing through the top or crown portion of the last, is enabled to as-V Vof the last, a last bed piece to engage the top or crown of a last between said side members, and connections between the last bed piece and last bed piece supporting member constructed and arranged to permit rocking movement of the last bed piece about a centerpassing through the top or crown of the last.
2. In a work support, the combination of a jack post, a laterally movable last engaging member having a pinless engaging surface to engage the top of a broken-down last, and means connecting the jack post and last-engaging member to permit rocking movement of the last-engaging member about an axis passing longitudinally through the top of the last and enable the pinless last-engaging member to automatically conform in inclination to the top of the last upon application of pressure between the last and last-engaging member.'
3. In awork support, the combination of a jack post, a last bed piece supporting member connected to the jack post for movement in a plane transverselyof the jack post, and havingside members for engaging the sides of the last, a last bed piece having a pinless engaging surface to engage the top or crown of a last, and connections between the last bed piece and last bed piecesupporting member constructed and arranged to permit free rocking movement of the last bed piece about an axis passing longitudinally of the last through the surface at the top or crown of the last.
4. In a device of the character described, a last engaging member for engaging the top or crown portion of a last, a support for said last engaging member having projecting members for engaging the sides of the last, and connections between the support and said last engaging member constructed and arranged to permit free rocking movement'of the last engaging member relative to said support about an axis passing longitudinally through the top of the -last engaged by said last engaging member.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a jack post, a'last bed piece supporting member connected to the jack post for movement transversely thereof and provided with a recess having side portions to embrace the sides of a last, and a last-engaging member seated in said recess for rocking movement about a center passing longitudinally through the top of the last to cause the last-engaging member to automatically conform to the top of the last as the last and last-engaging member are pressed together.
6. In a work support, the combination of a jack post, a last bed piece having a pinless engaging surface constituting the sole engaging means between said last bed piece and the last, a last bed piece supporting member, said last bed piece and'last bed piece supporting member having cylindrically formed engaging surfaces, and means connecting the last bed piece and last bed piece supporting member constructed and arranged to permit the last bed piece to automatically rock about an axis passing longitudinally through the top or crown of a broken ddwn last when the last and last-engaging member are pressed together.`
'7. In a work support, the combination of a jack post, a last bed piece having a pinlcss engaging surface for engaging the top or crown of a last, a last bed piece supporting member movable transversely of the jack post, members for engaging the sides of the last and movable with the last bed piece supporting member, said last bed piece and last bed piece supporting member having cylindrically formed engaging surfaces, and means connecting the last bed piece and last bed piece supporting member at the ends thereof constructed and arranged to permit the last bed piece to rock about an axis passing longitudinally through the top or crown of the last.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a last engaging member for engaging thertop or crown of a last, a
` connections between the last kkengaging member andsaid jack post constructed and arranged to permit movement of the last-engaging member to diiierent operative positions in each of three directions to conform the last-engaging member to the top of the last, one in a verticalplane extending longitudinally of the last, another in a horizontal plane extending transversely of the last, and a third in a vertical plane extending transversely of the last and about an axis extending longitudinally through the top or crown of the last.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a last engaging member for engaging the top or crown of a last, a support for said last engaging member provided n with wing portions to embrace the sides of a last, said support and last engaging member having cylindrically curved bearing surfaces the axis of Which extends longitudinally in the plane of the top or crown of the last, and connectionsbetween the support and last engaging member constructed and arranged to permit free rocking movement of the last engaging member about the said axis.
10. Ina shoe support, the combination of a jack post, a `last bed piece supporting] member connected to the jack post and having side wing portions for embracing the sides of the last, and a last bed piece disposed` between the side wing portions for engaging the top or crown of the last constructed and arranged for free rocking e movement about an axis passing longitudinally through the plane ofthe to-p or crown ofthe last.
11. In a shoe support, a jack post, a last bed piece supporting'member connected to the jack post for tilting movement in a vertical plane longitudinally of the last, a .pinless last bed piece, and connections between the last bed piece and said supporting member constructed and arranged to permit automatic rocking movement of the last bed piece about an axis extending longitudinally in theplane of the top of the last to conform to the inclination thereof when the last and last bed piece are pressed together.
12. In a shoe support, a jack post, a last bed piece supporting member connected to the jack post for tilting movement in a vertical plane longitudinally of the last, a spring normally acting to return the supporting member in either direction to initial position, a last bed piece, and connections between theJ last bed piece and said supporting member yconstructed and arranged to permit rocking movement of the last bed piece about an axis extending longitudinally in the plane of the top of the last.
13, In a shoe support, a jack post having a transverse cylindrically shaped recess, a last bed piece supporting member having a portion to engage said recess and permit the said member to tilt in a vertical planelongitudinally of the last, a spring acting on said portion to normally maintain the said member in initial position, a last engaging member to engage the top or crown of a last, and connections between the said members constructed and arranged to permit rocking movement of the last engaging member about an axis extending longitudinally in a plane passing through the ktop or crown of the last.
14. In a shoe support, a jack post, a last bedk piece 'supporting member, a last engaging member having a pinless engaging surface to engage the top of the last, and connections between the last bed piece supporting member and' last engaging member permitting the last engaging member to rock about an axis passing longitudinally through the top of a last and enable the last engaging member to freely conform in inclination to the top of a broken down last unrestricted by the angular relation of said top and the last pin socket. s
