Specification ot Letten Patent.

Application tiled January l0, 1917. Serial No. 141,555.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we Tiioius E. MURRAY and ARTHUR V. A. Molino, citizens of the United States, residing t New York, in the county 'of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in CutOut Switches, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is a cut-out switch so constructed that an aperture in the wall of the casing, whereby access may be hd to the parts within said casing, is closed by 'a swinging shield when said switch is closed, and opened when said switch is opened. In this way, the hand of the operator, when introduced into the casing to insert or remove fuses, orv for Vother purposes, is protected from chance contact with live parts, and
, access to the interior of the box is barred ceive the upper edge and yabove sai so long asthe switch arm is in contact with a live terminal.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a section of our switch on the lineas, ai of Fig. 2, showing the shield or door `and the contacts in closed position, one side of the'base being broken away to show internal construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig; -3 is s section similar to Fig. 1, showing the shield ory door and the contacts in open osition. Fi .-4 is a cross section on the e y, of ig. 1.
Sl r. letters and numbers of reference indicate like parts.
' A is a metal box incl the mechanism. B is the covgismanged'to reoi uw im manning porojections 1 entering an end wall of sa x.- A projection 2 on the opposite end wall extends through an opening in said cover receives the shackl a seal fastening 8. The cover is thus locked in place, and cannotbe removed wthout'destruction or mutilation of the seal'fastening.' Cris a -base block, referably of porcelain, disposed within the x. Extending transversely through the lower orton of said block is a liber rock shaft the ends of which are 'ournaled in the walls of box A,
Vand covere by caps E secured to said walls.
On shaft D are metal hubs F, received in recesses G in said' block, and inte ral with said hubs are the switch levers H, Said levers coperate with two downwadl extending. pairs of spring contact clips J, Ii carried by said block.
cover e 0% permit access to the interiorof the box, theshaft D is rocked so as'to move the switch levers H, I out of the contact cli s J, K. In suitable sockets in the base bl are sleeve circuit terminals P which connect with the lead Q'which asses through the end wall of the box. in said sockets, their threaded shells iiake contact with said sleeve terminals Pz andthe usual buttons Rat the ends of said pl make contact with the hubs F on rock shii Hence when the switch levers H, I are closed, circuit is established through the fuses, levers and contacts to the opposite lead S which extends through the opposite wall. of the box. At this time, access-as has been stated-cannot be ot to the interior of the box, because the shi d closes the aper. ture. On the other hand, movement of the shield to permit such access, breaks circuit at the switch. Hence the. shield may be opened to allow of the fuse plugs being renewed, without danger of the o tors hand comin in contact with a ve conductor. It is also im ossible'to obtain access to terminals for t e purpose of stealing current. A l
We claim: 1. A box, havin -an aperture in its wall, a xed contact an a` a curved shield within said-.box carriedcbi said shaft and closing said aperture, a lever on said shaft-coperating with said en fuse plugs T are inserted shaft in said box,
contact; a fixed support within said box, and
a fuse on said su .port and interposed in-the switch circuit, w ereby when said shield is curved shield within said box carried.. by
switch lever on said r shaft cooperating with said contact; a fixed support within said box, andV a fuse on said support auditif `said sectors and closin 4said aperture," a-
' Contact, u base block il i saidbox' having a.
ter osed in the switch circuit, whereby when sai shield is'moved to close said aperture, said switch is cloned and when said shield is moved to open saidapertm'e to alford access to said fuse.g said switch is opened.
8. A box, havin f an a )ettaro in its wall, nlxed contaet an a roc shaft in said box, a curved shield within said box carried b Saidshaft and closing said aperture, a Switci lever Aotilsaid shaft copeating with said socket lull tetminals ofzthe switch circuit soxet, and a fuse plug in said socket and eoperatin with said terminals; whereby when said s ield is mqved lo close said .spel-ture; said switch is closed, and when seid shield is nioved to open said aperture to :Eoidncoe to s aid fuse plug, said switch l is. opened.
, 4. A box having a flat wall, and an a. er ture thelfnin, l. fixed contact and a. rock s dft in said-linx, an arc-shaped shield within said linx and carricd"by said shaft.2 and a. switch lever on said shaft eniiperatxng with said enntuet, the said shield being of a transverse width to close'said aperture and to extend inlu the box beyond the op iosing edges of said aperture when in cioscd )ositiom whereby when said shields moved t0 close said aperture, said switch is closed and nceess tn the 'interior of the box 'revented by the edge portions of said shiel overlappin r the edges of said aperture' and when sai shield is n'wved to opensald aperture, said switch is opened. -v
