Beit known that I, JAMES L. MOTT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin Square, L. I., .of the town of Hempstead, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have Ainvented new and useful Improvements in Fly-Swatters, of

which the following is a specification.

The invention has reference in general to insect destroyers, and more particularly to devices of this character known as fly swatters.

The primary object of the invention resides in :the production of'a device of this character wherein the wire cloth or the like commonly used in the construction of fly swatters is detachably connected to the handle in a novel and convenient manner in order that the same may be readily removed and replaced as the occasion may so demand.

The inventiomamong other features, comprehends the provision of a handle which is so formed to provide contiguous therewith, a clamp for holding the cloth or striking element of the swatter to the handle'.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, A denotes a wire cloth or the like commonly used in the construction of ily Swatters and for the sake of clearness the same will be hereinafter referred to as the Striking element, Shown as connected with a handle denoted generally by the character 5.

This handle 5 is constructed from a single strand of wire 6 bent at its medial portion to provide a looped hand grip 7, and thence intertwisted forming a shank 8. At the outer or free end of the shank 8 the in- Y tertwisted strands of the wire are separated and bent to provide a pair of diverging offset branches 9, and the manner of positioning these diverging branch portions with respect to one another forms atthe forward or upper extreme end of the Shank a substantially V-shaped space 10. `.Eachof the branch portions 9 is terminally bent inan outward horizontal direction to provide a clamp 11. Tliisclamp 11i-consists of'a pair of substantially L-shaped jaws 12 arranged in` an offset horizontal plane with respect to one another, and e'ach embodying a rigid horizontally disposed arm13 and a yieldable `arm. 14k connected with one another by the vertically arranged bight 15. The lengthV .of the yield'able arm 14 exceeds the length of the rigid arm18, 'thus positioning the protruding extremity 16 of eachof the` yieldable arms 14 Within the V-Shaped space 10 for a purpose to be hereinafter'morefully set forth. f The free extremity of each of the protruding portions 16 terminates in eyes 17 through which the threaded bolt 18 projects and on which the nut 19 is threadedly mounted.

In the operation of the device, the bottom transverse edge of the striking element A is inserted between the rigid arm and the yieldable arm of each of the jaws and downwardly in the vertical bight portions 15, after which the eyes 17 of the protruding portions 16 of the yieldable arms are brought into alinement or registration with one another by compressing the divergingbranch portions 9. After the eyes are properly alined with one another the bolt 18 is inserted in one of the eyes and through the striking element A and` extended in the other of said eyes and on which the nut 19 is threaded. It will, therefore, be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the inveni tion relates that the vertical bight portions 15 grip the striking element at points adj acent its free longitudinal edges, thus establishing a firm connection, through the cooperation of the rigid and resilient clamping arms of the Striking elementto the handle. v

What is claimed as new, is

l. A. fly swatter embodying a handle hav ing a shank, a pair of diverging branch portions on the upper end of said shank, a clamp formed contiguous with said branch portions and terminally provided with eyes, a wire fabric adapted to be inserted in the clamp, the eyes of the clamp registering with one another upon the compression of said diverging portions, and a fastening device projecting through said eyes and said wire fabric.

2. A fly swatter embodying a handle constructed from a single length of wire looped at its medial portion to form a hand grip, the wire being thence intertwisted to provide a shank, a pair of diverging branch portions formed at the free end of the shank, a jaw formed integral with each branch portion, a wire fabric adapted to be inserted in vsaid jaws, said jaws being movable in a direction toward one another upon the compression of said diverging portions, and a fastening device projected through said jaws and said wire fabric.

A fly swatter including a shank formed at its upper end with a V-space, a pair of horizontally arranged clamping jaws formed contiguous with said shank, each jaw consisting of a rigid arm and a resilient arm, a wire fabric adapted to be inserted between the arms of said jaws, the said redevice projecting through the free terminal of each of said jaws for securing the wire fabric therein.
