- CONCRETE-MIXER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
4 BEieSUE Application filed February 5, 1917. Serial No. 146,682.
To all whom itv nay concern:
Be it known that 'we, JOHN P. GILSON and MICHAEL GrLsoN, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Fredonia, in the county of 'Ozaukee and State of Wmconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Mixers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to new and useful improvements in concrete mixers, more particularly of that simpler type embodying a.
drum rotatably mounted in a yoke having a horizontal pivotal axis, whereby the drum may be dumped by swinging the yoke on its axis. 1
It is in general the object of our invention to simplify and strengthen the structure and to improve the efliciency of concrete mixers of this general nature, and it is more particularly an object to distribute the load strain of the mixing drum when in its operative mixing position, so, as to relieve the bearing connection of the yoke and drum.
With-the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims. 4
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a mixer constructed in accordance with our invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view throng the supporting frame of the drum on the line 2--2of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view slrowing the adjustable means for holding the drum in meshing engagement with its driving gear.
Referring now more particularly to.the
accompanying drawings, the supporting frame for the drum comprises end skeleton standards 5 connected at their lower ends by a pair of skid beams 6 and by a beam 7 disposed adjacent their lower ends. The upper ends of the standards forming journals 7 receiving pintles 8 at the ends of the arms of a relatively wide drum supporting yoke 9, the pintles 8 being preferably in the form of sleeves integral with the yoke arms.
The mixing drum comprises a pan-shaped bottom casting 10 and an annular mouth casting 11 having its outer portion taperingly reduced to facilitate discharge, and these plate 12 bolted thereto.
castings are connected by a cylindrical wall For journally mounting the drum in the yoke 9, the bottom casting thereof is provided with an outwardly projecting boss '13 engageable in a socket portion of an outwardly projected boss 14 on the bight of the yoke, and both Patented Aug. 14, 1917.
bosses are bored for the reception of a pivot bolt 15 fixedly secured in the drum boss 13. Thus a bearing for the bottom end of the drum is afforded by the shaft 15, and also by the disposition of the boss 13 in the socket portion 14. 'An and thrust bearing for the drum is formed by ball bearings 16 between the bosses. e
For rotating the drum, and for also affording a support for the mouth end thereof to relieve strain from the bearing of the inner end of the drum, the mouth casting of the drum is provided with an annular series of gear teeth 17 and these gear teeth mesh with the teeth of a gear wheel 18 carried on a shaft 19 journaled in bearings 20 on a beam 21 which is carried by-forwardly extending brackets 22 at the intermediate portion of the end standards 5. This gear wheel 18 is driven by a shaft 23 journaled in bearings 24 on the said beam 21 and carrying a gear 25' meshing with bevel teeth on whereby to discharge the contents of the. mixer. For effecting this vertical swinging movement of the drum, an operating handle 29 is secured by the bolt 30 to one of the pintles 8. To provide a means whereby the drum is positively held inproper meshing engagement of its teeth 17 with the gear of the gear wheel 18. Fixed on the.
wheel 18, the handle is extended past the bolt to form an abutting face 31 and intermediately pivoted to the adjacent standard 5 is a pawl 32 having a bolt 33 threaded in one end and adapted to abut the face 31 of the lever, inward slipping movement being revented by a lug 34 on the lever.- The olt 33 provides an adjustment whereby an exact meshing relation of'the gear teeth may 11!) gear wheels, and means for rotating said be insured, and the pawl upon being swung readily releases the drum for movement to its dumping position.
For rotating the drum 1n its dumped position, the shaft 19 is extended thereunder in a downwardly inclined direction and carries.at its lower end a gear wheel 35 adaptvertically tiltable drum, one end of saiddrum being open, a support for said drum,
means for rotating the drum in one direction when its open end is disposed upwardly, means for rotating the drum in a reverse direction when said open end is disposed downwardly, including a continuously rotatable shaft disposed substantially parallel to the axis of the drum, a pair of gear wheels on the shaft, peripheral gear teeth on the drum adapted to be selectively meshed with the tgear teeth, and means for rotating said sha t.
2. A concrete mixer comprising a hori'-' zontally rotatable drum support, a mixing drum having one end rotatably secured to the support, an inclined shaft journaled under the drum, a pair of gear wheels on the shaft, peripheral gear teeth on the mixing drum, adapted to selectively mesh with the shaft.
3. A concrete mixer comprising a support, a mixing drum rotatably secured therein, a shaft journaled under the drum sub- I bination, a-pair of supporting standards,
a mixing drum rotatably and vertically mounted between said standards, peripheral gear teeth on the drum, a forwardly extendingbracket formed on each standard, a transverse beam carried by said brackets, transversely extending and alined' arms. formed on said beam, bearings in said arms, a shaft journaled in said bearings and extending substantially, parallel to the axis of the drum, gear wheels mounted on the shaft and adapted to be selectively engaged by the peripheral teeth of the drumfor revolving said drum in one direction when in normalposition and ma reverse direction when in discharging position, a beveled gear fixed to said shaft and juxtaposed the forward gear wheel thereon, laterally" extending and transversely alined arms formed on said beam to one side of said other arms, a driven shaft journaled therein, and a beveled pinion gear on the inner end of the last;
named shaft and in mesh with the beveled gear of the first shaft substantially as de scribed.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands at Fredonia, in the county of Ozaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
