To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PEREZ M. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have 1nvented an Improvement in Protected Metal Articles, of which the following descrip tion, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a protected metal article especially adapted among other uses to be employed for building purposes.
The invention has for its object to provide a metal article with a protective layer of fibrous material, such as asbestos paper, felt and the like, which is adhesively secured to the metal article in a superior manner and by means of an adhesive which in itself forms a firm, tough and highly efficient protective layer for the metal member.
- The fibrous layer may and preferably will be provided with a surface coating which is hard, tough, and a superior resistant to abrasion, weather and acid and alkali fumes.
To this end, the metal article is provided with a coating or layer of polymerizable ma-' terial, such as Chinese wood oil, and while the coating is still tacky, a layer of fibrous material, such as asbestos paper, felt and the like, is applied to the coated metal article and in turn has applied to it a layer of polymerizable material, and the article thus protected is subjected to heat to bake the layers of the polymerizable material.

Referring to the drawing, a represents a metal article, which is shown in sheet form and preferably of steel.
The steel sheet a has applied to it a coating or layer 1) of polymerizable material, preferably Chinese wood oil alone or mixed with other materials, and is further provided with a. layer 0 of fibrous material, such as asbestos paper, felt or the like, which in turn has applied to it a layer or coating (1 of polymerizable material, such as Chinese wood oil alone'or mixed with other materials, such as resins, asphalt, coal tar and its derivatives.

It is preferred to heat the protected metal article a sufficient length of time to bake the internal layer of polymerizable material as by so doing the said layer is rendered firm, hard and tough, in which case the metal article is sealed and protected from corroslon.
Furthermore the fibrous layer is secured to the metal article in a superior manner, as the internal layer of polymerizable material penetrates more or less into the inner or under surface of the fibrous layer, so that when the internal polymerizable layer is baked, it hardens within the fibrous layer as well as on the steel Or other metal article and secures the fibrous layer to the metal article in a firm and superior manner.

As a result a superior protected metal article is produced, which is especially adapted for use for building purposes.
I have herein represented the metal article as a sheet, but it the invention in this respect, as it may be of is not desired to limit any desired form, as, for instance, an I or T beam, channel bar, angle iron, and the like.
It Is preferred to use both the internal and external layers of polymerizable material, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as either alone may be used to advantage.
Claims.
1. A protected metal article comprising a metal member provided with a coating of baked polymerlzable material, a fibrous layer afiixed to the metal member by said polymerizable material, and a layer of baked polymerizable material on the exterior surface of said fibrous layer.
2. A protected metal article comprising a metal member provided with a coating of baked polymerizable material, and a fibrous bestos layer.
In testimony whereof I have signed my bestos aflixed to the metal member by said baked layer.
e. A protected metal article comprising a metal member provided with a layer of baked Chinese wood oil', a layer of asbes- -tos afiixed to the metal member by said baked layer, and a layer of baked Chinese wood oil on the exterior surface of said asname to this specification.
