IMPROVEMENT IN MEMORIAL CROSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,694, dated February 13, 1872.
Specification describing Improvements in Memorial Grosses, invented by Mrs. ELIZA- BETH W. HALL, of the city, county, and State of New York.
This invention consists in a memorial cross, to be kept in a house or elsewhere, the post and arms being made hollow, thus forming receptacles for out flowers and water for their nourishment, and having a hollow open base, capable of containing mold for growing ivy or other plant which will entwine itself around the cross.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a memorial cross made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central si ction of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan there- 0 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the cross, which is represented as being made hollow, of sheet metal. Its upright 00 is open at the top, and the transept b is also open at the top. They both form receptacles for cut flowers and for water to nourish them. The cross has a pedestal formed on it, consisting of several tiers, c c, which are of rectangular form, and the bottom of these fits in angle-pieces e e on a detachable base, B. This is also hollow, and is made of the same material as the cross. It is only covered on the corner portions, as shown at 'v v, to the extent necessary for the support of. the pedestal c c; and each of these corner portions has provided upon it fixed an gle-pieces e e, for the reception of the corners of the pedestal c c and the keeping of the cross in place on the base. When the cross is in place, openings :0 a: are left at the sides of the pedestal between the corner pieces. The hollow open base thus constructed is intended to contain mold for growing plants,
which will grow up through the openings w w and entwine themselves around the cross. At the junction of the cross-piece b with the upright a of the cross a hatchment, G, is provided, for the inscription of the name of the deceased person in whose memory the cross is kept, or for any other suitable inscription, emblem, or device. i
