To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK ELLIs KAB sE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Birmingham, in the county. of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces for Burning Coke and Charcoal, of which the following is a specification. a I My invention relates to furnaces of the type generally knownas charcoal burning heating furnaces for irons, cooking utensils and the like, and my object is to design the furnace that coke may be substituted for charcoal and burned with equal efi'ectiveness, thus making possible the use of a less expensive and more plentiful fuel, and, as a result, increasing the range of usefulness of the furnace.

My invention consists of a metallic casing or jacket having a removable clay tile lining, the jacket carrying movable supporting members at its upper end adapted to be swung inwardly to overhang the opening in the tile lining and also adaptedwhen swung outwardly to receive between their supporting loops an extension casing which may serve as a flue or a heating drum, or the like.

My invention comprises the foregoing novel features and other details of construction which are hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows my furnace in plan; and

Fig. 2 shows it in side elevation partly broken away.

Fig. 3 shows the furnace with the blower stack mounted thereon and the hinge support swung out; and

Fig. 41 illustrates the furnace with a heating drum mounted thereon.

This tile it is inserted a removable grate 7, having supportlng legs 8 attached to or formed integral therewith and of such length as to positively support the grate above the bottom. of the casing coincidentally with its reaching a point in the taper bore of the sleeve where it makes a tight fit. In such position it stands above the side opening 9 for the admission of air and the withdrawal of ashes. This opening 9 extends through the metallic casing and through the tile. Aslide door 10 is provided for the opening 9 and travels in vertical guides 11 attached to the outer wall of the casing 1. Three hinge straps 12 are shown attached at the top of the metallic casing with their hinge loops exposed above the top of the casing and there adapted to receive the inturned ends of a wire bail 13, which bails project beyond the lining 6 and overhang the furnace proper. I prefer three of these, but obviously more or less may be used and they project sufficiently inwardly to support on their free ends a pot, a pan or the customary irons.

It will be obvious that these bails may be swung back so as to clear the top of the casing and when such is the case I may mount thereon a bottom cone 14 of a blower or draft stack 15 having therein a damper 16 for purposes of control and which is suit able for producing the necessarv draft for rapidly igniting the coke when such is used. In the event it is desired to use the furnace for room heating purposes, a radiating drum 17 is provided which is adapted to be mounted on the top of the vessel 1 and which is provided with a closed top 18, handles 19 and outlet ports 20 for the products of combustion. A vertically movable slide door 21 is provided thereon to close a side opening through which fuel may be introduced or the fire poked. Legs 23 on the heating drum will fit about the casing l and hold the heater more securely thereon.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A heating furnace of the character described, comprising a refractory lined metal casing, and bail shaped loops hinged to the upper end of the casing and adapted to fold over and rest on the casing with their free ends projecting over the furnace proper, said loops being adapted to fold outwardly and downwardly against the casing, in combination with a furnace attachment adapted to seat on top of the casing to forma contin nation thereof.
