HARRY A. DOUGLAS, OF BRONSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DOUGLAS & RUDD MFG. 00., OF BRONSON, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
COWL-LAMP.
Application filed April 1, 1916. Serial No. 88,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. DOUGLAS, citizen of the United States, residing at Bronson, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement} in Cowl-Lamps, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cowl lamps and is inclusive of an incandescent lamp receiving socket, a hood or cowl for the lamp bulb, a coupler having a rear tubular portion in which the lamp socket is inserted, a forward tubular portion upon which the lamp hood is supported, and a mounting for the coupler. This mounting may, for example, be the dashboard of an automobile or a plate upon which the coupler is --mounted and which plate is adapted to be secured to the dashboard or other support.
In the lamp of my invention there is also included an improved formation of socket to facilitate the attachment thereto of a conducting wire and also to facilitate the assembly of the socket shell and a contact carrier within the shell.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a sectional view on line 1 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a tongue formation on the socket that I preferablyemploy; and Fig. 5 illustrates a slot formation in the coupler permitting the passage ofthe tongue when the socket and coupler are to be assembled or separated. Y
Like parts are indicated by similar characters ofreference throughout the. different gures.
The-socket has ametallio shell 1 having bayonet slots 2 for receiving the contact carrying base 3 of the incandescent lamp, this base having bayonet pins tby which the lamp and socket may .be maintained in assembly. In the form of the invention illustrated the base of the lamp has a metallic sheath connected with one terminal of the lamp filament and a central contact 5 constituting the other terminal of the lamp filament, the lamp circuit containing the metallic shell 1. When the bayonet pins 4 are fully within the bayonet slots 2 the spring pressed contact 6 presses upon the contact A to hold the lamp in assembly with the shell as well as to include the lamp in circuit. The contact carrying plug 7 is held in assembly with the shell 1 by a screw 8, this screw serving also to fasten the terminal 9 and the shell 1 together, this terminal 9 having a curled end for the reception of a conducting wire that may be soldered or otherwise secured thereto. The other circuit Wire is received within the terminal 10 into which the lower end of the screw'contact 6 is screwed, the terminal 10 being adapted to reciprocate through the plug,7.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 3141, 1917..
The socket shell has a bead 11 formed there in and a tongue formation 12 (preferably two tongues) in front of the bead, for 'a purpose shortly to be mentioned. A cowl or hood 13 is provided partially to cover the lamp bulb 14, the light from the lamp bulb passing through the opening or passage 15 in the cowl or hood to shine directly upon -the object to be illuminated. The lamp socket and lamp hood are assembled by means of a coupler having a rear tubular formation 16 in which the lamp socket is inserted and which tubular formation is received between the bead 11 and the tongues 12, this tubular portion of the coupler having slots 17 to permit of the passage of the tongue formation into and out of the coupler. In a$embling the parts the socket shell is passed into the coupler with the tongue 12 in alinement with the slots 17 whereafter the socket and coupler are turned with reference to each other to bring the tongues out of alinement with the slots.
As the materialof which the metal shell 1 is made is springy, the tongues 12 and bead '11 will'have a good grip upon the rear tubular portion of the coupler. The coupler also has a forward tubular portion 18 upon which the lamp hood is slipped and on which this hood may preferably be turned. The adjacent ends of the forward and rear tubular portions of the coupler are continued to form a flange 19 while the rear end of the rear tubular portion of the coupler is continued to form another flange 20. A mounting plate 21 is received between the flanges 19 and 20, the flange of the structure. Where the ultimate support 22 is metallic, as in an automobile structure, the mounting plate 21 is desirably of insulation. Screws 23 pass through the mounting plate into the support 22.
Claims relating to the assembly. of the support and mounting plate are containedin my co-pending application Serial No. 159,728, filed April 4, 1917.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish' to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may. readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. The combination with a socket, for an electric lamp, having a bead and outwardly projecting tongue formation in front of the bead; of an electric lamp having a bulb and a contact carrying base portion which is received in said socket; a hood for the lamp bulb; a coupler having a rear tubular portion m which the lamp socket is mserted and which tubular portion is received between the bead and tongue formation on the socket, this tubular portion of the coupler being slotted to permit of the passage of the said tongue formation, said coupler also'having a forward tubular portion upon which the lamp hood supported; and a mounting late to which the coupler is secured, the a acent ends of the forward and rear tubular portions of the coupler. being continued to form a flange while the rear end of the rear tubular portion of the coupler is continued to form another flange, the mounting plate being received between these flanges.
2. The combination with a socket, for an electric lamp, ha a head; of an electric lamp having a bul and a contact carrying base portion which is received in said socket; a hood for the lampbulh; a coupler having a rear tubular portion in which the lamp socket is inserted and the rear of which tubular portion is engaged by the bead on the lamp socket, said coupler also having a forward tubular portion upon which the lamp hood is supported; and a mounting plate to which the coupler is secured, the adjacent ends of the forward and rear tubu-. lar portions of the coupler being continued to form a flange while the rear end of the 3. The combination with a socket, for an electric lamp, having a head; of an electric lamp having a bulb and a contact carrying base portion. which is received-in said socket; a hood for the lamp bulb; a coupler having .a' rear tubular portion in which the lamp socket is inserted and the rear of whichtubular portion is engaged by the head, said coupler also having a forwardtubular portion upon which the lamp hood is supported; and a mounting late to which the coupler is secured, the ad acentends of the forward and rear tubular portions of the.
coupler being continued to form a flange which is engaged by said mounting late.
4. The combination with a socket or an electric lamp; of an electric lamp having.
a bulb and a contact carrying base portion which is received in said socket; a hood for the lamp bulb; a coupler having a rear tubular portion in which the lamp socket is inserted and a forward tubular portion upon which. the lamp hood-is supported; and a mounting plate to which the coupler is secured, the adjacent ends of the forward and rear tubular portions of the coupler be continued to form a flange which is engag by said mounting plate.
5. The combination with a socket for an electric lamp; of an electric lamp having a bulb and a contact carrying base portion which is received in said socket; a hood for the lamp bulb; a coupler having a rear tubular portion in which the lamp socket is inserted and a forward tubular portion upon which the lamp hood is supported;
and a mounting plate to which the cou ler I is secured, the adjacent ends of the orward and rear tubular portions of the coupler being continued to form a flange while.
