To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Baronne ANNA HEDDA An ion on MECKLEMBOURG, of 119-121 Avenue des Champs-Elyses, in the city of Paris, Republic of France, have invented a Foldin and Portable Night-Stool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Tae invention relates to a portable and folding night commode whichcan be carried conveniently in the hand, in the same way as a suit case or traveling bag. The night commode is specially intended for motorists and travelers who do not wish to make use of the conveniences provided in'railway carriages and hotels; it is however also very serviceable in hospitals.

The new device consists in the special combination of a seat mounted on removable or folding feet with a collapsiblepamthe combination being such that the whole arrangement can be easily folded and inclosed in a cover or casing. It then takes up only a very small amount of room, and can be conveyed in a convenient manner like a suit case or other baggage. A special feature of the arrangement is that the telescopic pan occupies a definite andsecure position, both when ready for use and also when all the parts are folded up.

The invention is illustrated in the drawing, Figure 1 being a vertical section through the whole appliance as ready for use, Fig. 2 a vertical section through the pan only; Fig. 3 a partial view from above, Figs. 4c and 5 separate views of the joints between the frame, seat and'pan.

As can be seen from the drawing the night commode consists. of a seat a which may be of any external shape for instance square, and is provided with an opening adaptedto be closed by a lid. The seat is preferably made of wood but it may also be of any other material which forms a suitable substitute for wood and will make a seat that is equally light and strong.

tions it, 2' which fit into one another in the known telescopic manner. lVhen drawn out, the walls of the two sections fit each other closely, and the whole forms a perfectly stanch receptacle, which is secured in position for use, by means of struts h, the-hooked ends of which are inserted into eyes provided underneath the bottom of the pan. The collapsing of the pan is eifected by pushing the sections into one another as shown in Fig. 2, in which'position the two parts are held together by means of short hooks c". The pan is provided with a lid 7c and both pan and lid may be made of aluminium in order to keep the weight down aslow as possible.

For conveyance, the struts which spread the legs are dismounted, the legs 6 are then folded up, and the pan is telescoped and secured. The legs can then be secured on the underside of the device by means of straps or other suitable means. The struts 29 will lie against the bottom of the pan. The folding night commode as described can be inclosed as a whole in a cover or casing of suitable shape and provided with handles for transport.

lVhen the device is desired to be used, the legs 6 are first set up, fastened together by means of the struts p and the lid Z) is lifted. To expand the pan and draw the parts firmly together, the bottom 2' is provided on the underside with a handle 7L This enables the parts to be brought into such a position that they can be locked together by means of the struts h and without having to touch the inside of the pan.

The bottom of the pan is preferably provided with four equal eyes for the hooks of the struts it so that the pan will stand level on the ground. The hooks can be inserted in either pair of eyes, as convenient. With the same object in view the handle I? is recessed in the underside of the bottom 2'.

l Claims:

1. A folding and portable commode comprising a frame, folding legs for support-- ing said frame, a collapsible pan, a cover therefor, a seat hinged upon said frame and arranged to secure said pan thereon, means for rigidly maintaining said pan in its open condition and in its collapsed condition, a movable member carried by said frame and adapted to extend over said pan, a resilient pad on said member adapted to engage and lock the cover of said pan and means adapted to clamp the collapsed pan against vibration when the legs are folded.

A folding and portable commode comprising a frame, folding legs for supporting said frame, a collapsible pan provided in its bottom face with an external recess, a handle for said pan located in said recess, a cover for said pan, a seat hinged upon said frame and arranged to secure said pan thereon, means for rigidly maintaining said pan in its open condition and in its collapsed condition, a movable member carried by said frame and adapted to extend over said pan, a resilient pad on said member adapted to engage and lock the cover of said pan and means adapted to clamp the collapsed pan against vibration when the legs are folded.

4.- A folding and portable commode comprising a frame, folding legs for supporting said frame, cross-bars connecting said legs in pairs, a collapsible pan comprising two telescopic sections the lower section being provided in its bottom face with an external recess, a handle for said pan located in said recess, ears carried by said lower section, members carried by the upper section of said pan and terminating in hooks adapted to engage said ears whereby the pan is rigidly maintained in open condition, hooks carried by said upper section and adapted to fit beneath the bottom of the lower section whereby said pan is maintained in collapsed condition, a cover for said pan, a seat hinged upon said frame and adapted to secure the pan thereon, a movable member carried by said frame and adapted to extend over said pan, hinge members connecting said movable member with the hinges of the seat whereby the movable member and said seat are movable about the same pivots, a resilientpad on said movable member arranged to engage and lock the cover of said pan, and a strut movably carried by one of said cross-bars and arranged to be detachably connected with the other cross-bar whereby said legs are secured in their upright, unfolded condition, said strut being further arranged to clamp the collapsed pan against vibration when the legs are folded.
