To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY D. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Scarifying Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to scarifying devices for road engines, and more particularly relates to an improvement in the tools employed in connection with such devices for breaking or tearing up the ground.

In scarifying attachments of a certain type it has been common to employ tools in the form of spikes arranged at the end of tool holders or drag bars such for instance as illustrated in my pending application Ser. No. 35,839 filed June 23rd, 1915. While these spikes are eective for certain characters of work, yet for certain purposes it is desirable that a tool be provided which will have a comparatively large clearance space.

The object of this invention is to provide a tool of this character which can be readily attached to the drag bars or tool holders employed in connection with the spike type of tool so that. either form of tool may be substituted for the other without disturbing the other parts of the scarifying devices.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drag bar or tool holder showing my new form of tool applied thereto.

In the said drawings, 1 represents the tool holder or drag-bar, one end of which is provided with an integrally formed split collar 2 by which it may be attached to the pivoted draft bar in the usual way and on its upper edge there is an integrally formed split collar 3 by which it is attached to a cross shaft by means of which the holder may be raised and lowered and pressure applied thereto by the fluid pressure device such as illustrated in my application referred to. -The rear or free end of the tool holder is preferably bifurcated, the bifurcated portions having V-shaped notches to receive the spike type of tool referred to, which is square in cross section, caps with V-shaped notches being employed for securing the spikes in position to the tool holder. For this purpose the tool holder is provided with four perforated bosses 4, corresponding to perforated bosses in the cap by which the spikes may be clamped firmly in position as shown clearly in my former application referred to.

In the present case the tool 6 is provided with a series of perforated bosses 7, corresponding to the bosses 4 so that it may be readily attached to the tool holder by the same bolts 5 formerly employed. The tool is also preferably provided with V-shaped ribs 8 which fit the V-shaped notches 9 of the holder to lend further strength to the connection between the tool and holder. The tool is of arched or horse-shoe form so that a large clearance space is provided to allow the material torn up by the tools to be readily cleared therefrom, it having been found necessary to provide for this in certain classes of material.

By the arrangement described it will be seen that the scarifying attachment may be provided with twosets of tools of different characters which may be readily removed and applied without any changes whatever in the other parts of the scarifying mechanism. By this construction, also scarifying attachments which have already been put into use equipped with the spike type of tool may be supplied with the new form of tool which may be readily applied to it at the established points of attachment for the spikes.

Transversely arranged recess shown in Fig. 1 is especially adapted to a tool holder of the character heretofore described in that it affords means for forcing the tool from the holder and also enables tool holders to be formed with an improved seat formed by the longitudinally arranged recess since the center part does not constitute any bearing surface for the tool, but the tool in fact gets its bearing from the end parts of the holder.

rlhe tool shown in the present case is one which is especially designed to act as a rooter plow, although the invention is also applicable to scarifying tools of other forms.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:
