To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE J. LEAGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Carmel, in the county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Printing-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved printing press more especially designed for use by public utilities companies, fraternal insurance orders and business concerns using periodically a large number of bills and like business instruments, and arranged to simultaneously print the body and stub of the business instrument together with the name of the party for whom the instrument is intended, the name appearing both on the body and on the stub and being printed from the same slug.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a printing means for printing the body and stub, and a second printing means for printing the same name on both the body and the stub by the use of the same slug.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

12 for printing a bill, receipt or similar business instrument 13 (see Fig. 7) having a body 14 and a stub 15. A platen 20 operates in conjunction with the form 12 for making the impression of the body 1 1 and the stub on a continuous web 21 from which the instruments 13 after being printed are cut off, as hereinafter more fully explained. Thecontinuous web of paper 21 unwinds from a roll 22 mounted on a bracket 23 attached to the back of the platen to reciprocate with the same. The web 21 after leaving the roll 22 passes over a guide roller 24 at one end of the platen 20 to guide the web over the face of the platen, which latter is provided at the top and bottom with guideways 25 (see Fig. 8) for holding the web in proper position on the platen during the time the impression is made and while the web is moved intermittently over the face of the platen, as hereinafter more fully explained.
The platen 20 is provided with a sidewise extending extension 26 provided on top and bottom with guide rods 27 and 28 on which is adjustably mounted a web feeding mechanlsm arranged as follows: The frame 29 of the web feeding mechanism is provided on top and bottom with eyes 30 and 31 slidingly engaging the guide rods 27 and 28 and adapted to be fastened thereto by set screws 32, as plainly shown in Figs. 2, 5 and S). In the frame 29 is journaled a vertically disposed intermittently driven feed roller against the peripheral face of which is pressed the web 21 by a pressure feed roller 36 journaled in bearings 37 on the free ends of spring arms 38 attached to the frame 29. The spring arms 38 press the roller 36 in firm contact with the web 21 so that when the roller is rotated a feeding movement is given to the web 21 in the direc tion of the arrow a1. On the lower end of the shaft 40 of the roller 35 is secured a ratchet wheel 41 engaged by a pawl 4-2 fulcrulned on a pinion 43 mounted to rotate loosely on the shaft 10. The pinion 13 is adapted to mesh with a rack l t adjustably secured on a bracket 15 provided on its ends with pins 46 mounted to slide in bearings 17 attached to the main frame 10 of the print ing press. Set screws 18 serve to fasten the pins 46 in adjusted position on the bearings 17, it being understood that the frame 29 and the bracket 4-5 are adjusted one relatively to the other so that the pinion.

The frame 29 is provided at the top and bottom with guideways 51 for guiding the web 21 during its feeding movement, the guideways 51 being in transverse alinement with the guideways 25 on-the platen 20 previously mentioned.
On the lower guide rod 28 is mounted to swing a vertically disposed knife moving with the frame 29, but the latter is adjusted on the said guideways and the said knife 60 is disposed forward of the feed rollers 35 and 30. The fulcrum end of the knife 00 is provided with a heel (51 adapted to engage a roller 62 mounted on a bracket 03 adj ustably secured by a bolt (3-1 to the main frame 10; said bolt (if passing through a slot (35 to allow transverse adjustment of the bracket 03 to hold the roller 02 in alinement with the heel (51 of the knife (50. When the platen 20 swings into open position the heel (31 engages the roller (52 thus imparting a swinging motion to the knife 00 for the latter to cut off the instrument 13 from the preceding portion of the web 21. A spring 66 bears on the knife 60 to return the latter to open position during the closing movement of the platen 20. It is understood that the knife 60 operates in conjunction with the outer edge of the vertical member 07 of the frame 29 to insure a proper cutting of the web. The f a ne 29 is provided with guideways 68 beyond the knife 60 for receiving the cut-off iustrument 13 and holding the same until moved into a receiving box 70 adjustably mounted on a transversely extending rod 71 engaging bearings 72 at tached to the main frame 10. Set screws 73 serve to fasten the rod 71 in position in the bearings 72 after the desired adj ust ment is made. The boX 70 is open at the side 71 opposite the guideways (l8, and on the outer end of the box 70 is mounted a steering arm 75 for pushing the cut-off instrument 13 out of, the guideways (S8 and into the open end 7 1. The pivot 7 6 of the steering arm 7 5 is provided at its lower end with an arm 77 connected by an adjustable link 78 with one end of a bell crank lever 79 fulcrumed on the main frame 10 and provided at its other arm with a pin or projection 80 adapted to be engaged by the frame 29 at the time the platen moves into open position to swing the arm 75 inward for transferring the cut-off instrument from the guideways 08 into the box 70. The link 78 is provided with a turnbuckle, as indicated in Fi 2, to allow of conveniently lengthen- Screws 4L9 ex- 9 ing or shortening the link to allow correct working of the arm 75. In order to impart a swinging motion to the platen, the following arrangement is made: The arms of the platen are attached to a rock shaft 86 ournaled on the main frame 10, and the said arms 85 are connected by a link 87 with an arm 88 secured on a rock shaft 89 journaled 011 the main frame 10. On the rock shaft 89 is secured an arm 90 con nected by a link 91 with a Wrist pin 92 on a disk 93 secured on a shaft 9 1 journaled on the main frame 10. On the shaft 9% is secured a gear wheel 95 in mesh with a pinion 96 secured on the main shaft 97 journaled on the main frame 10. The main shaft 97 is provided with a fly wheel 98 and with fast and loose pulleys 99 connected by belt with other machinery for imparting a continuous rotary motion to the main shaft 97. The rotary motion of the main shaft 97 is transn'iitted by the pinion 96and gear wheel 95 to the shaft 94- which by the disk 93, crank pin 92, link 91 and arm 90 imparts a rocking motion to the shaft 89 and this rocking motion of the shaft is transmitted by the arm 88 and the link 87 to the arms 85 of the platen to rock the latter toward and from the form 12 of the bed 11.
In order to ink the form 12 use is made of an inking roller 100 journaled in a frame 101' provided with a pivot 102 attached to the side arms 103 pivotally connected with the top guide rod 27 attached to the platen 20. The side arms 103 are provided with friction rollers 10% engaging inclined guideways 105 attached to the main frame 10 so that when the platen is rocked as above described then a traveling motion is given to the frame 101 to move the inking roller 100 over the form during the time the platen 20 is on its opening and return. stroke. It is understood that the inking roller 100 is in uppermost inactive position at the time the impression is made. The inking roller 100 travels over an ink-supplying plate 100 extending between guideways 105 to ink the roller 100 prior to the latter passing down over the form 12.
In order to print two names on each instrument 13, one on the body 14: and the same name on the stub 15, use is made of two slug carriers and 111 each provided with a pair of arms 112 (see Figs. 3, 4: and 6) for a slug 113 to pass between the same from one endand out of the other end. The bottom of the slug 113 in position in the carrier 110 is-seated on a block 114v pressed on by a spring 115 so as to provide a yielding movement for the slug 113 during the time an impression is made. The slug carriers 110 and 111 are pivoted at 116 on the main frame 10 and the said carriers are pivotally connected by a link 120 with an arm 12].
secured on the shaft 89 so that when a rock ing motion is given to this shaft 89, as previously explained, then a rocking motion is given to the carriers and 111 to move the same upward from lowermost position into uppermost position at the time the platen moves from open position into closed position. The slug carrier 110 is adapted to pass with its free end into an. opening formedin the bed 11 and the form 12 (see Fig. 8) and the slug 113 is adapted to pass through an opening 126 formed in the die face 127 so that the slug makes an impression on the stub 15 at the time the body and stub are printed. The other carrier 111 rocks to one side of the form 12 on the bed 11 and its slug 113 is adapted to make an impression on the body 14 of a preceding previously printed instrument 13 opposite the extension 26 of the platen 20.
The slug 113 is first moved into position into the carrier 110 and after an impression has been made and the carrier has returned to normal lowermost position then this slug 113 is transferred from the carrier 110 to the carrier 111 and for this purpose the following arrmigei'nent is made: Slugs, one for each name to be printed on the body 14 and the stub 15. are assembled one behind the other in an inclined galley 130 mounted on top of a table 131 forming part of the main frame 10. The lower exit end of the galley 130 opens into a transversely extending guideway 132 for the lowermost slug to pass into and to be pushed along this guideway between the jaws or plates 112 of the first carrier 110. For this purpose use ismade of a pusher 133 mounted to slide in a guideway 132 and the rear end of this pusher is provided with a head 134 lnwing a pin 135 engaging a. slot 136 formed in a threearmed lever 137 fulcrumed at 138 on the top of the table 131. The lever 137 is provided with a pin 139 engaging a slot 140 formed in a lever 141 fulcrumed at 142 on the under side of the table 131. The lever 141 is pivotally connected with one end of a rod 143 provided with a slotted head 144 slidingly engaging the shaft 94. On the head 144 is journaled a friction roller 145 engaging a cam groove 146 formed on the back of the disk 93 so that when the latter is rotated an intermittent movement is given to the rod 143 whereby a swinging motion is imparted to the lever 141. The swinging motion of the lever 141 is transmitted to the lever 137 whereby a reciprocating move ment is given to the pusher 133 for the lat ter to push the lowermost slug out of the guideway 132 and into the carrier 110.
After an imprint has been made the slug 113 in the carrier 110 is pushed out of the latter and into the carrier 111, and for this purpose the following arrangement is made: A pusher 150 normally extends atthe forward end of the guideway 132 between the galley 130 and the first slug carrier 110, as plainly shown in Fig. 4. This pusher 150 is mounted on the end of a spring 151 attached to the head 134 and the said pusher is pressed on by a spring 152. When the lever 137 is rocked as before explained and a sliding movement is given to the pusher 133 then a like sliding movement is given to the pusher 156 to push the slug 113 out of the carrier 110 and into the carrier 111, as will be readily understood by reference to 3 and 4. On the top of the table 131 is secured a retaining plate 153 disposed intermediate the carrier 110 and 111 so as to hold the slug in position while being transferred from the carrier 110 to the carrier 111. During the return movement of the pushers 133 and 150, the pusher 150 travels over an incline 154 onto a guide plate 155 in front of the carrier 110 so that the pusher 150 does not push out the slug 113 held in the carrier 110 at the time and during the return movement of the pusher 150.
When a slug is pushed by the pusher 150 out of the carrier 110 into the carrier 111 then the slug in this carrier 111 is pushed out by the incoming slug and is pushed into the upper end of a delivery carrier mounted on top of the table 131 and inclined in a downward direction.
In the upper end of the galley 130 is mounted loosely a follower block 161, and a retaining block 162 is mounted in the lower end of the galley 160. The blocks 161 and 162 are connected with each other by a cord 163 passing over guide rollers 164 165 so that the block 161 pushes the slug 113 in the galley 130 downward while the block 162 holds the accumulating slugs 113 in the galley 160.
In order to ink the slugs immediately after the same are pushed into the carriers 110 and 111, use is made of an inking roller journaled on an arm 171 and adapted to pass over a segmental inking plate 172 supplied with ink in the usual manner and attached to the top of the table 131. The arm 171 is held on the upper end of a shaft 173 journaled in the table 131 and provided at its lower end with an angular arm 174 pivotally connected by a link 175 with the three-armed lever 137 so that when a rocking motion is given to this lever 137, as previously explained, then a swinging n10- tion is given to the arm 171 to move the inking roller 170 over the plate 172 and over the slugs contained in the free ends of the carriers 110 and 111 at the time the said carriers are in lowermost position.
In order to positively push a slug discharged from the carrier 111 into the upper end of the galley 160, use is made of a pusher mounted to slide in a suitable guideway 181 arranged on the top of the table 131. The pusher 180 is provided with a pin 182 extending downward through a slot in the table 131 (see Fig. 1) and engaging a slot 183 in a bell crank lever 1S4: fulcrumed at 18-5 on the under side of the table 131. The bell crank lever 18% is pressed on by a spring 186 to normally hold the bell crank lever against a stop pin 1S7 arranged on the under side of the table 131. The bell crank lever 18-1 is adapted to be engaged by the forward end of the link 175 to impart a swinging motion to the said bell crank lever with a view to actuate the pusher 180 at the time a slug has passed from the carrier 111 into the upper end of the galley 160, thus pushing the several slugs in this galley downward to make room for the next incoming slug, it being understood that the pusher 1S0 returns for this purpose to inactive position, as shown in Fig.
The operation is as follows:
When the machine is running and the platen 20 is moving from open position, as shown in Fig. 1, into closed position, as shown in Fig. 3, then an impression is made 011 the web 21 to print the body 14 and the stub 15 on the web. During this closing movement of the platen 20 the two carriers 110 and 111 are swung from their normal lowermost position into position for making, with their slugs, impressions on the web, that is, the slug in the carrier 110 makes an impression on the stub printed at the time by the platen and form, while the slug contained in the carrier 111 makes an imprint of another name on the body 1 1 of the preceding instrument 13, as will be readily understood by reference to F 7. It will be noticed that the slug 113 prints say the name R. Roe on the stub 15 while the slug 113 prints the name John Doe on the body 1.4: of the preceding instrument 13 and which preceding instrument has the name John Doe on its stub 15.
During the time the platen 20 moves into open position the carriers 110 and 111 return to lowermost position and then the cam connection above described causes movement of the pushers 133 and 150 so that the slug contained in the carrier 110 is moved into the carrier 111 and the slug which was in the carrier first is pushed out on the galley 160. The lowermost slug 113 in the galley 130 is pushed by the pusher 133 into the carrier 110 and these slugs are now inked by the inking roller 170 prior to the next operation. During the closing movement of the platen 20 the web 21 is fed in the direction of the arrow 50, by the feed rollers 35 and 36, a distance corresponding to the length of an instrument 13, and when the platen finally moves into open position the knife 60 is actuated and cuts off the outermost instrument 13 and at the same time a swinging motion is given to the arm 7 5 to push the cut-o1f instrument out of the guideway (58 into the boX 70. From the foregoing it will be seen that a new piece of web 21 is moved opposite the form 12 for making another impression on the web. As the slug which was previously in the carrier 110 was transferred to the carrier 111 it is evident that at the second operation the name of R. Roe is printed on the body 14k of the previously printed instrument 13 so that the name It. Roe appears twice on this instrument, once at the body 1 1 and once at the stub 15, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 7.
In order to allow printing of instruments 13 of different length, the rack 44. is adjusted on the bracket 15 to impart a moreor less turning movement to the feed roller 35, and the bracket 15 and frame 29 are laterally adjusted according to the length of the instrument printed at the time.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, com prising a printing means for printing at each operation of the printing press the body and stub of the instrument and a second printing means for printing a name on the said stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and for printing the same name on the body of the same instrument during the next following operation of the printing press and while the said first named printing means prihts the same matter on a second instrument and the said second printing means prints another name on the stub of the said second instrument.
2. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a printing means including a platen and a bed containing a. form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, and adouble slug carrier wholly independent of the said bed and form and operating in conjunction with the said platen for printing simultaneously with the printing of the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and for printing with the same slug the same name on the body of the instrument during a subsequent operation of the printing press.
3. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, com prising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, and two spaced slug carriers adapted to suecessively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one 011 the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press.
4. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operatin in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, and means for intermittently feeding a continuous web over the said platen.
5. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two
spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with'the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, means for intermittently feeding a continuous web over the said platen, and a cutting mechanism operating in conjunction with the said platen for cutting off a printed body and stub from the web.
6. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body, and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers adapted to success1vely receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other 011 the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, and transferring means for moving a slug into one slug carrier and transferring a slug from this carrier to the second carrier.
7. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, a delivery galley containing a series of slugs, means for pushing a slug out of the galley into one carrier, and means for pushing a slug in this carrier into the second carrier.
8. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two
spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one oi the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, and means for inking the slugs held in the carriers at one time.
9. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two
spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, a delivery galley containing a series of slugs, means for pushing a slug out of the galley into one carrier, means for pushing a slug in this carrier into the second carrier, and a receiving galley for receiving a slug from the second carrier.
10. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions, one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, means for intermittently feeding a continuous web over the said platen, a cutting mechanism operating in conjunction with the said platen for cutting off a printedbody and stub from the web, and means for piling the cut-off instruments.
11. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, the bed and form having an opening therethrough, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed,
and two spaced slug carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the carriers being adapted to pass through the said bed and form opening, and the other being adapted to pass to one side of the saidbed. 7

A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business in strument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, the bed and form having an opening therethrough, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the carriers being adapted to pass through the said bed and form opening, and the other being adapted to pass to one side of the said bed, and means for simultaneously moving the said platen and carriers toward and from each other.
13. A printing press for simultaneously printing the body and stub of a business instrument of the character described, comprising a bed adapted to contain a form for simultaneously printing the body and stub, a platen adapted to co-act with the said form for making an impression, the platen extending beyond one side of the bed, two spaced slug carriers adapted to successively receive and carry the same slug, one of the said carriers operating in conjunction with the said platen and the other operating in conjunction with the said platen extension to simultaneously make two impressions one on the stub simultaneously with printing the body and stub during one operation of the printing press and the other on the body of the instrument printed by the form on a preceding operation of the printing press, and adjustable feeding means for intermittently feeding the web a desired distance over the platen.
