SAFETY DEVICE MACHINERY.
Application filed June 4, 1914, Serial No. 842,912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. CARoLIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Safety Device for Machinery, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved safety device for use on foot or power presses and similar machinery, and arranged to move the operators hand or hands from between the die and the punch prior to the latter descending to prevent the operators hand from being maimed.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a lever operating in front of the die and punch and actuated by the latter in such a manner that it sweeps or wipes across the front of the die and punch prior to the punch reaching and engaging the work operated on at the time by the punch and die.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the safety device in inactive position to permit the operator to place the work in position on the die" Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same and showing the punch in lowermost position and the safety device in front of the punch and die; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
The foot power stamping press illustrated in the drawings is mounted on the usual frame A supporting a fixed die B for receiving the work to be acted on by a punch C removably attached to the lower end of a cross head D mounted to reciprocate vertically in suitable bearings E arranged on the front of the main frame A. The cross head D is caused to reciprocate in the usual manner, either by foot power or other means, according to the nature of the stamping press used for any particular purpose.
The safety device consists essentially of a vertically disposed lever F fulcrumed on a pivot Gr attached to a cross bar G secured to the lower ends of the guideways E and extendi g in f nt f the cr s h ad D and Specification of Letters Patent.

its punch G. The upper end of the lever F is provided with an angular slot H into which extends a friction roller held on a stud I secured to the cross head D so as to move up and down with the same. The lower portion H of the slot H is approximately vertical while the upper portion H is curved sidewise to the left, as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower end of the lever F is provided with a wiping plate J adapted to reach down below the top surface of the die 13 at the time the cross head D and the punch G move into lowermost position, as indicated in Fig 2. The right-hand edge J of the wiping plate J is beveled so that when the lever F is in inactive position, as shown in Fig. 1, then the edge J extends to one side of the punch C and die B to allow the operator in charge of the press to conveniently place the work to be operated on in position on the die B or to remove the finished work therefrom as the case may be. It is understood that when the cross head D and its punch C are in uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 1, the friction roller I is in the upper end of the upper portion H of the slot H. Now after the operator has placed the work to be operated on in position on the die B and then presses the treadle, the cross head D and the punch C descend and in doing so the friction roller 1 traveling in the slot H causes the lever F to swing so that the wiping plate J swings downward in front of the descending punch C and the die B thus pushing away the operators hand to prevent the same from being maimed by the descending punch C. It is understood that prior to the punch C reaching a lowermost position the wiping plate J is in its lowermost position in front of the punch C and the die B, that is, at the time the friction roller I enters the upper end of the vertical portion H of the slot H, and during the remaining descent of the cross head D and the punch C the lever F remains stationary with the wiping plate J in front of the punch C and the die B to prevent the operator from passing the finger between the co-acting die B and punch C. WVhen the cross head D and punch 0 rise the lever F remains temporarily stationary, that is, until the friction roller I has reached the upper end of the vertical portion H of the slot H, and then the lever F is caused to swing back into its normal inactive position, as shown in Fig. 2, on the further r1s1ng of the cross head D and the punch C.
It will, be noticed that the safety device unfailingly pushes the operators hand out from under the punch C prior to the latter reaching a lowermost position so that the operators fingers are not liable to be maimed, and as the wiping plate J remains in front of the punch and die during the stamping operation, it is evident that the operator positively cannot pass his fingers between the co-acting parts.
The safety device shown and described is composed of very few parts which can be readily applied to stamping presses as now constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a press, of a safety device, the said press having a frame, a die fixed on the frame and a punch co-acting with the said die and mounted to reciprocate in the said frame, the said safety device having a vertically disposed lever fulcrumed on the front of the said frame, the lower portion of the said lever having a wiping plate adapted to move across the front of the die and punch, one side edge of the said wiping plate being beveled, the upper pertion of the said lever having an angular slot of which the lower portion is disposed vertically and the upper portion extends sidewise in the direction opposite to the beveled side edge of the plate, and a stud on the cross head of the said punch and engaging the said slot.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES B. CAROLIN.
