Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES CAVANAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rounding and Channeling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to machines for rounding or rounding and channeling the soles of boots or shoes.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of machines of this type, and to that end the invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and referred to in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed de scription of the machine illustrated therein.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention in its preferred form; Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the mechanisms operating upon the shoe; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional detail showing the mode of operation of the devices which engage the shoe sole; and Fig; 6 is a sectional detail through the rim of the knife deflecting roll.
In the drawings the invention is shown as embodied in a machine for rounding and channeling the sole of a shoe after the outer sole has been temporarily secured in position preparatory to permanently sewing or otherwise securing it to the shoe. In accordance with the present invention the projecting edge of the sole is trimmed or rounded by an endless band knife 2 which passes over the band wheels 4 and 6, and over a deflecting guide 8 arranged to support and deflect the knife at the point where it operates upon the shoe sole. By thus deflecting the band knife at the point of operatlon upon the shoe sole, the edge of the sole may be trimmed substantially at right angles to the surface of the sole while the run of the knife leading to or from the point of operation on the upper side of the sole is so inclined that the shank as well as the forepart of the sole may be properly trimmed without danger of injury to the upper of the shoe. In the construction shown the deflecting guide 8 is in the form of a roll, the periphery of which guides and supports the knife at the point where it operates upon the shoe sole. and to support the knife against the thrust of the sole so that the edge of the knife constantly projects slightly beyond the edge of the roll, as indicated in Fig. 6. During the trimming or trimming and channeling, the shoe is guided by a guide 12 adapted to enter the crease between the upper and welt. The crease guide is in the form of a bail secured to the projecting arms of a yoke 14 which is mounted upon pivots 16 and is held normally in position against a stop 18 by a spring 20 (Fig. 2). The shoe is supported by a work supporting roll 22 mounted upon a carrier slide 24 which also carries the channeling knife 26, in case the shoe sole is to be channeled. The carrier slide 24 is mounted in ways formed in the upper end of a vertically movable slide 28, and is provided on its rear side with a rack 30 engaged by a gear segment 32. The segment 32 is secured to a rock shaft 34 mounted in the slide 28, and provided with an arm 36 which is connected by a link 38 with a treadle 40. By operating the treadle, the carrier slide 24 may be moved to vary the distance of the channel from the edge of the sole. The slide 28 is provided on its rear side with a vertical dove-tailed slot engaging a dove-tailed rib 42 formed on the front face of a lever 4:4. The slide is forced yieldingly upward to press the work support against the surface of the sole by springs 46 interposed between the upper ends of the adjusting screws 48 and the under side of a cross-bar 50 which bears against the lower end of the slide 28. The slide 28 may be depressed against the pressure of the springs 16 to enable the sole to be inserted between the crease guide and work support by a lever 52 secured to a rock shaft 54 which carries an arm 56 engaging a projection 58 on the slide. The lever 44: is mounted to turn upon a horizontal pivot stud 60, and is oscillated to assist in the feed of the shoe by a cam 62 secured to'the cam shaft 64;, and engaging a roll 66 carried by the lever. An intermittently acting feeding aw 68 cotiperates with the oscillating work support in feeding the shoe. This jaw is secured to an arm 7 0 projecting from a sleeve 72 which is mounted to rock and slide on a rod 74. The sleeve 7 2 is rocked to cause the jaw 68 to clamp and release the work by a cam groove 76 formed in the side of a cam drum 7 8 and engaging a roll on the end of an arm 80 which pro j ects from the sleeve. The sleeve is reciprocated in the direction of the feed by a cam groove 82 formed in the drum 78 and engaging a roll 8& on the sleeve.
The band knife 2 is continuously driven during the operation of the machine through a belt 86 passing over pulleys on the cam shaft 64:, and a pulley on the shaft 88 which carries the band pulley 6. The upper band pulley 4: over which the band knife passes is mounted on a stud carried by a vertically movable slide 90 which is supported upon a screw threaded adjusting rod 92. The rod is yieldingly supported upon a spring 94:, so that the band knife may be maintained under the proper tension.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential, and may be varied or modified without departing from the broader features of the invention.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and specifically described one form of machine in which it may be embodied, what is claimed is 1. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, shoe supporting and guiding devices, a sole trimming band knife, and a deflecting guide arranged to deflect and support the knife at the point of operation on the shoe sole.
2. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, shoe supporting and guiding devices, a sole trimming band knife. and a knife deflecting roll adjacent said devices, to guide the cutting edge of the knife close to said devices and deflect the run of the knife away from the shoe upper.
3. A sole rounding machine, having, in
combination, a sole trimming band knife, means for feeding the shoe against the edge of the knife, and a knife deflecting guide opposite said feeding means to form the knife into a comparatively sharp angle at the sole and hold the run of the knife away from the shoe upper.
4:. A sole rounding and channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole trimming band knife, a knife deflecting guide at the point of operation of the knife,- a channeling knife, and shoe supporting and guiding devices.
5. A sole rounding and channeling machine, having, in combination, means for feeding the sole, means to guide the sole in a definite path relatively to the shape of the shoe, a knife for channeling the marginal edge of the sole, and a sole trimming band knife supported to trim the edge of the sole as it is being fed.
6. A sole rounding and channeling machine, having, in combination, a work support and channel knife carrier, a channeling knife in said carrier, a guide for a shoe, mechanism for feeding the shoe, and a sole trimming band knife arranged to trim the sole edge as the shoe is fed across the support.
7. A sole rounding and channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole trimming band knife, a knife deflecting roll over which the knife passes, a guide for the shoe adjacent the roll, a sole support and channel knife carrier, and shoe feeding mechanism.
8. A sole rounding and channeling machine, having, in combination, shoe guiding devices, a sole trimming band knife angularly deflected at its point of operation upon the sole, a sole channeling knife, and means for feeding the sole of the shoe against the knife.
9. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, shoe supporting and guiding devices, a flexible sole trimming band knife, and a guide adjacent said devices for supporting the backsideand rear edge of the band knife to deflect the knife in close to said devices at its cutting point and hold the run of the knife away from the upper.
10. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, shoe supporting and guiding devices, a sole trimming band knife, and a supporting guide for said band knife having a small radius to angularly deflect the knife at the cutting point of the sole to guide the blade away from the shoe upper.
'11. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, shoe guiding and feeding devices, a sole trimming band knife, and a hollow roll having a thin flange for supporting said knife at its point of contact with the shoe sole.
