a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of lvhissachusetts, and useful Improvements in Channeling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to channeling or rounding and channeling machines, and more particularly to machines adapted to channel or round and channel the soles of shoes after the outer sole has been temporarily secured in position preparatory to permanently sewing or otherwise securing it to the shoe,
In doing certain classes of work it is desir-able that the channel be cut in certain parts of the sole, while other parts remain unchanneled, and it is the'object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved mechanism for throwing the channeling orgrooving knife into and out of action during the operation of the machine in which the knife is incorporated.
It is also a further object of the invention to provide novel and improved devices for supporting the sole while the shoe is being operated upon.
To these ends the invention consists of the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and referred to in the claims.
The invention will be readily understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and the following detailed description of the mechanism illustrated therein.

In the drawings the invention is shown as embodied in the rounding andchanncling machine shown and described in Patent No. 1,030,606, dated January 25, 191 2. This machine is provided with a trimming knife 1., a channel knife 2, a feed jaw 3, a crease guide 4., and a forcpart guide 5 which is movable into and out of operative position by mechanism fully described in the above patent. The sole supporting and channeling knife operating devices are carried on the carrier slide 6 which is mounted for vertical movement in the support 7. The support is vibrated and the carrier slide may be moved vertically by devices fully described in the above patent.
in the embodiment of the invention shown the channel knife 2 is provided with a shank fitting within a groove formed in a. knife carrying slide 9. The carrier slide is split at 1.0 so that the undercut side of the groove may be sprung toward the opposite side by a clamping screw 11. to securely clamp the knife in the carrier. By loosening the screw the knife may be readily removed or adjusted to var the depth of the channel cut. The knife carrier is mounted to slide in a slot in the sole supporting block 12, and is retained inthe slot by a rib 13 engaging a groove in the block and by the head of the clamping-screw 11 which passes through a slot 14 in the side of the block. The block is provided with a front wear plate 15 which is secured by a rivet pinlfi, andwhich may be replaced when worn away by itsengagement with the shoe sole. The wear plate is recessed at 17 to receive the blade of the channel knife when it is retracted into inactive position. The block is provided with segmental ribs 18 engaging curved guiding slots formed in the carrier slide 6. The centor of curvature of the guiding slots and ribs is substantially at the point. of the channel knife, so that the sole supporting block may rock about the point of operation of the channel knife to accommodate itself to the angle or curvature of the surface of the sole at the point of operation. The block 12 is re slide 6 by a spring pressed pin 19, the end of which engages a slot in the back of the block. A transverse pin 21 is secured in the pin 19, and extends through a hole 22 in the side of the carrier. The pin 21 is provided with a head 23 at the side of the carrier by which the retaining pin. may be readily disengaged from the sole supporting block when it is desired to remove the block from the carrier slide 6. The knife carrying slide 9 is advanced or retracted to render the channeling knife active or inactive through a slide 24 mounted in the carrier slide 6, and connected with the knife carrier slide 9 by a projection 011 a rib 25 secured to the slide 24, and engaging a segmental slot 26 formed in the slide 9. The slot 26 is parallel to the segmental ribs 18, so that the connection between the two slides 24 and 9 does not interfere with the rocking movements of the sole supporting block, and so that the rocking movements of the block will not affect the position of the channel knife.
The slide 24 is advanced and retracted by a crank pin 27 formed on the upper end of a vertical rock shaft 28 and engaging a transverse slot '29 formed ,in theislide. The rock shaft 28 is mounted in the carrier slide 6, and is provided at its lower end with gear teeth 30 which are engaged a rack 31. The rack is connected with a mechanism for moving the forepart guide 5 into and out of operative position through mechanism the operation of whichis fully described in the patent above referred to. This mechanism comprises a link 32 connecting the rack with an arm 33 secured to the front end of a rock sleeve 34, the rear, end of which carries an arm 35 slotted to receive a pin 36 projecting from a lever 37 which is connected by a link 38 with the treadle operated lever 39.
When the shaft 28 is rocked to advance the slide 24 and knife carrying slide 9, the front side of the segmental arm 40 in which the slot 26 is formed, is brought into engagement with the curved rear face of the sole supporting block 12, so that the knife carrying slide is rigidly held against further forward movement. The arm 40 thus forms a stop which engages the sole supporting block for accurately positioning the channel knife and holding it against the forward pull exerted on the knife blade by the sole being channeled.
In addition to the sole supporting block, which engages and supportsthe sole substantially at the point of operation, a second sole support is provided for engaging and supporting the sole and determining the angle at which the sole is presented to the rounding and channeling knives. This second sole support is pivotally mounted upon the carrier slide 6 so that its positionvwith relation to the face of the. sole supporting block 12 may be varied, and means is provided for retaining it in adjusted position.
As shown, the second sole supportcomprises a bearing plate 41 which extends across the front fact of the carrier slide 6 below the sole supporting block 12, and is provided with arms 42 which extend on opposite sides of the carrier slide, and are pivotally connected to the slide at their upper ends by pivot screws 43. The lower end of one of the arms is provided with a series of notches '44 adapted to be engaged by a locking fin ger 45 formed on a plate 46 which is secured to the carrier slide 6 by a clamp screw 47. The clamping screw passes through a slot in the plate (so that the locking plate may be readily moved to engage or disengage the locking finger 4.5 with the notch 44 corre sponding to the desired adjustment of the work supporting plate 41.
While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, especially in embodying the invention in the rounding and channelin machine of the patent above referred to, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essential to the broader features of the invention, and may be varied and modified as found desirable or best suited to the construction of the machine in which the invention is to be embodied.
Having explained the nature and ob ject of the invention, and specifically described one form of machine in which it may be embodied, what is claimed is l. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole support mounted to rock to accommodate itself to the surface of the shoe sole, a knife carrier mounted in the support, means for adjustably securing the channel knife in the carrier, and mechanism for advancing and retracting the knife carrier during the operation on the sole.
2. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole support provided with a guide-way mounted to rock in the carrier to accommodate itself to the surface of the shoe sole, a knife carrying slide mounted in the guideway in the sole support, a slide mounted in the carrier, and connections between the slides permitting the rocking movement of the sole support.
3. A channeling machine, having, in com bination, carrier, a sole support mounted to rock in the carrier to accommodate itself to the surface of the sole, a slide mounted in the sole support, means for clamping a knife in the slide, a slide mounted in the carrier, and a segmental rib and slot connection between the slides.
4. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole support mounted to rock in the carrier to accommodate itself to the surface of the sole, a knife carrying slide mounted in the sole support, a slide mounted in the carrier, connections between the slides permitting the rocking movement of the sole support, a transverse slot in the second slide, and a crank pin engaging the slot to advance and retract the slides.
5. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole support, a carrier therefor, a rock shaft in the carrier provided with a crank, a knife mounted in the sole support, and connections between the crank and the knife through which the knife is advanced and retracted by the crank.
6. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole support, a carrier therefor, cooperating segmental ribs and slots on the support and carrier for allowing the support to rock, a knife carrying slide mounted in the support, a slide mounted in the carrier to move in the same direction, and a segmental rib and slot connection between the slides.
7. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole sup-port provided with a guideway mounted to rock in the carrier, a knife carrying slide mounted in the guideway in the support and provided with a stop shoulder engaging the support when the knife carrier is projected, and mechanism for projecting and ret acting the knife carrier.
8. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole support provided with a guideway mounted to rock in the carrier, a knife carrying slide mounted in the guideway in the support and having a projection arranged to engage the rear side of the support when the knife carrier is projected.
9. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole support arranged adjacent to the point of operation on the sole, a carrier therefor, a second sole support comprising a sole engaging plate at the front of the carrier, rearwardly extending arms pivoted to the sides of the carrier, and means for securing the second support in adjusted position.
10. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a sole support arranged adjacent to the point of operation on the sole, 2). carrier therefor, a second sole support comprising a sole engaging plate ll ex tending across the front face of the carrier and provided with rearwardly extending arms 42, pivot screws 43 securing the upper ends of the arms to the carrier, notches 4st in one of the arms, and a locking plate 46 secured to the carrier and provided with a finger l5 adapted to engage any one of the notches.
11. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole support mounted to rock in the carrier to accommodate itself to the surface of the shoe sole, a knife carrying slide mounted to slide forward and back in the sole support, a slide mounted to slide in the same direction in the carrier, and connections between the slides permitting the rocking movement of the sole support.
12. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a carrier, a sole support mounted to rock in the carrier to accommodate itself to the surface of the sole, a knife carrying slide mounted to slide for ward and back in the sole support, a slide mounted to slide in the same direction in the carrier, said slides being provided with a segmental rib and slot connection.
