STOCK-INDICATOR.
Specfication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1917.
Application flled May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,114.
To all 'wlwm t may concern;
Be it known that| I, SrLAs W. READ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cor'vallis, in the county of Benton, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stock indicators vand particularly to an indicator for specifying the condition of a mercantile stock the units -of which consst of automobile tires, it being understood however that the indicator can be utilized with equal facility in connection with other mercantile stocks.
In retailing stocks made up of relatively large and cumbersome units such as automobile tires it is diflicult to keep track of the condition of the stock `and as a result much labor is ndulged in at times to locate the particular unit of the stock desired only to discover that such unit is not on hand. It
`is therefore the purpose of the present invention to provide an indicator which can be easily operated as each sale is made so as to show at all times the exact condition of the stock 'and thereby avoid useless hunting for a particular unit of the stock as Well as enabling the merchant to always keep his stock supplied with the necessaryiunits.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will ,be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several Views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stock indicator constructed in accordance with the invention and adapted for use in the business of re'oailing automobile tires;
Fig. 2, a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the registering' cylinders Fig. 5, a perspective View of the upper' journal bar, and
Fig. 6, a perspective View of 'the lower journal bar.
Referring to the drawings the invention is shown as comprising a casing A including a front member 10. This front member is provided on its outer side with va plurality of Vertical rulings 11 forming Vertical columns 12 and a plurality of horizontal rulings 13 forming horizontal'columns 14:. It will of course be obvious that the rulings 11 'and 13 intersect each other and delineate spaces common to both the Vertical and horizontal columns. Mounted on the front member 10 in the Vertical column 12 farthest to the left and in line with each horizontal column 14 is a card holder in which cards are adapted to be inserted having indicated thereon the size of`a tire, such card holder being indicated at 16. Mounted on the front member 10 above the fourvertical columns 12 next to the Vertical column in which the holders 15 are disposed is a card holder 17 removably oarrying a card 18 having indicated thereon the name of a standard tire and beneath this name in lline with respective Vertical columns indications setting forth certain characteristics of the particular make of tire specified on the card. In this instance these characteristis are indicated as follows- Q D. Smooth meaning quick detachable smooth; Q D. Safety meaning quick detachable Safety; S. S. Smooth meaning straight side smooth; and S. S. Safety meaning straight side Safety. It will of course be understood ythat the indicator can be enlarged and the arrangementjust described on the front 10 for as many makes of tires' as is desired.
The front 10 is provided in the Vertical columns 12 just beneath each horizontal ruling 13 with a slot 19 and beneath each slot with a substantially square opening 20. The purpose of these slots and opening-s will presently appear. portion of the casingis a transversely extending journal bar 21, while another transversely extending journal bar 22 is secured in the lower portion of the casing. These bars 21 and 22 are connected by journal rods 'positioned centrally of respective Vertical columns 12 in which the slots 19 and opening's 20 are disposed. Mounted in the casing' A between the bars 21 ancl 22 is a plurality of intermediate journal bars 2-1 disposed directly to the rear of the horizontal rulings 13. It will be noted that the journal rods 23 also pass through the bars 211. Rotatably mounted on the rods 28 between the Secured in the upper bar 21 and the uppermost bar 24 and between adjacent bars 24 and between the lowermost barl 24 and the bar 22 are re 'stering cylinders 25 each of which embo ies a knurled flan e 26 which projects through the adj acent sot 19 whereby the cylinders 'canybe conveniently rotated by the hand when desired. Each cylinder 25 has indicated around its periphery a plurality of.
operate with respective knurled flanges 26.l
fThe manner of usingthe indicator will be obvious. 'Byl referring to Fig. 1 the for a particular make of 34 x 4 straight side merchant infthev event of na customer asking smooth tire Would refer to 'the indicator and following -the requisite Vertical column down until he 'reached the horizontal column indicating the. size 34 x 4 and then take the reading of the register cylinder `common to the two columns which readin "'indicates zero and shows that no tire's wit the char- -acteristicsdesired are in stock.v `,Thu's a reminder is established to` replenishv the stock' unit with this particular characteristic. Should a customer desire'a particular` make of 34 x 4*quick,detachab1e smooth tire 'the same process is resortedto after shifting to the-desired Vertical column. LUnder these conditions the reading of the indicator shows five such tires in 'stock and if the sale isconsummated the 'particular registering cylinder 25 is manually v'rotated by engaging theknurled flange 26 with the thumb so as to bring the number 4on said cylinder in 'registration with the adjacent opening 27. w In the case of manufacturers orw excepa large tionally large dealers who carxy stock of each size and' type o tire two v'Vertical columns and a pair of cylinders lcan be employed for indicating'thenumber of each size and type in stock owing.
to the impossibility to place the necessaryV series of numbers on a single cylinder. For instance, by referring to Fig. 1 if two Vertical columns werel employed for a quick detachable smooth tire there would be eighty-three 32 x 4 such 'tires according to the reading on the indicator shown.
While one particular' form of carrying the invention into practice has been, illustrated and described it will be obvious that various changes can be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim and it will be further obvious that the indicator can be'utilized for the purposes intended in connection with various types of mer-` cantile stock' What is claimed is n A stock indicaftor comprising a casin having its front ruledl to form Vertical an horizontal columns, said columns having stock unit characteristics indicated therein 'respectively, the spaces on the front of' the casing common to said columns having openings therein respectively', spaced horizontal journal bars in said casing, Vertical journal'rods passing through said journal bars, cylinders rotatably mounted on the lrods'between said bars, each cylinder being provided with a vcircumscribing flange projectingthrough the related openingin the vcasing and l'said cyln'ders each having numbernthereon adapted to besuccessively obsei'ved through another of said openings as tli'cylinder 1s rotated, rearwardl directed fingers on the journal bars, and at'eral ex- .tensions on the free ends 'of said fingers yieldingly coperating with the flange on the cylmder beneath to hold saidcylinder against rotation; i
' l`In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the `presen'ce of two witne'sses.
