WESLEY T. HAZELRIGG, OF EL DARA, ILLINOIS.
ENSILAGE-PACKER.
Application filed September 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVEsLnY T. HAZEL- nrco, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Dara, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ensilage- Packers; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a packer for packing ensilage in silos and the primary object of the invention is to provide a rotary packer which is mounted interiorly of a silo and forced upwardly by the ensilage with which the silo is filled.
A further object of this invention is to provide an ensilage packer as specified which includes specifically, a vertical shaft having a casting attached to the lower end of the same to which a plurality of packing rollers are swivelly connected, to provide a bevel gear structure carried by the upper end or top of the silo through the medium of which the vertical shaft is rotated, and further to provide a pair of rollers which are rotatably supported interiorly of the bevel gear for rotating the vertical shaft and also! for permitting the shaft to move vertically through the bevel driving gear.
With the foregoing and other objects in view this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a silo showing the improved tamper applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the silo.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the tamper structure.
Fig. i is a vertical section through the driving bevel gear, and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line of Fig. 4.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a silo of any ordinary construction which has a beam 2 supported by Specification of Letters Patent.

about the sprocket 5 and about a sprocket 7 carried by a shaft 8. The shaft 8 is supported in any suitable manner by the silo structure 1 and it has a pulley 9 mounted thereon which may be connected to any suitable type of a prime mover for transmitting power to theshaft 8 and to the shaft 4 through the medium of the sprocket chain 6 and the sprockets 5 and 7.
The shaft 4: has a bevel gear 10 mounted thereon which meshes with a bevel gear 11. The bevel gear 11 is rotatably supported by the beam 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 4; of the drawings, and it is held against vertical displacement by means of a nut or collar 19, which is mounted upon the hub 13 of the bevel gear. If it is so desired, suitable bearing rollers indicated at la may be provided for relieving the friction of the rotary movement of the bevel gear 11. The bevel gear 11 is provided with a central bore 15 through which a vertical shaft 16 extends. The shaft 16 is substantially oval shaped as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, and it has a casting 17 mounted upon its lower end. A. plurality of packing rollers 18 are swivelly connected as shown at 19 to the casting 17. In the drawings, the packing or tamping rollers 18 are illustrated as conical in shape, but it is to be understood that any desired or practical shape of roller may be employed without departing from the spirit of this invention.
The outer end of the rollers 18 are re- 0 cessed as shown at 19 so as to provide for the increasing of the length of the rollers by the addition of sections as indicated at 20. The sections :20 are provided with reduced portions 21 which are externally screw threaded as shown at 22 and are adapted for connect-ion with the internal screw threads 23 formed about the inner wall of the re cess 19'.
The shaft 16 is slidably mounted in the bore 15 of the bevel gear 11 so that it may move vertically therethrough and a pair of rollers 25 and 26 are rotatably carried by the bevel gear 11 and engage the edges of the shaft 16 as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, for rotating the shaft by the rotation of the bevel gear, and also for permitting the shaft to move vertically through the bore 15 of the bevel gear 11, so that the rollers 18 may ride upon the top of the ensilage Which is being fed into the silo l, at all times.
The packing or tamping rollers 18 are preferably rotatably mounted upon rods 28 Which are connected to the casting 17 at the point 19.
From the foregoing description taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction, and of the method of operation of the improved ensilage packer will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to Which this invention appertains.
shaft extending through said bevel gear, a pair of rollers rotatably mounted Within said bevel gear and'engaging said vertical shaft for rotating the shaft upon rotation of the otally connected to said casting, the outer 5 ends of said packing rollers being provided With recesses, sections adapted for connection to the outer recessed ends of said packing rollers for increasing their length and Weight.
In testlmonywhereof I afliX my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
