To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filled-Bag-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in machines for sewing filled sacks, and more especially to devices of this character in which the sack is brought by a conveyer to the stitching mechanism and fed past such stitching mechanism. It is desirable in this class of apparatus that the conveyer be driven independently of the sewing mechanism, the former carrying the sack to a point adjacent the stitching mechanism before the latter is set in operation.
It is desirable also in machines of this character, that the operator should have both hands free to properly place the sack with its mouth so as to be fed to the stitching mechanisnnand also that the conveyer and stitching mechanisms should be under ready and simple control by the foot of the operator, and to lessen his work, that the conveyer and stitching mechanism should be successively set into operation by substantially one movement on his part.
An object, therefore, of the present invention is to provide means for controlling successively by a single lever, the clutches which operate the vertical operating conveyer shaft, and the vertical operating stitching mechanism shaft, on an organized filled bag apparatus.
A further object is to provide two independent driving connections for the sewlng mechanism and conveyer respectively, which driving connections include separate clutches, and a common controlling mechanism for the two clutches, so. constructed that one may operate in advance of the other.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully described.

Referring to the assembled machine as shown in Fig. 1, it is of the Union Special type of filled bag sewing apparatus, as
shown in general in.Patents Nos. 875,314,
187 5,339, of December 31st, 1907, and shown more-specifically as to the adjustable head type in various pending applications filed by me, of which application Serial No. 5 536,765, filed January 6th, 1910, is an example. The framework 1, the endless conveyer 2, the sprocket wheel 3, driving the latter, the sewing head-supporting bracket 1, the bracket 5 supportlng. the conveyer, and the -means for raising and lowering the conveyer operated by the crank handle 6, are all of a usual and well known construction. The source of power for operating the mechanism is herein shown as an electric motor 7, from which power is transmitted to a fiatpulley 8, loosely mounted on the upright shaft 9, which is suitably connected to 'the cross shaft which carries the sprocket 3 for operating the conveyer belt. The pulley 8 has an elongated hub 10, and is supported on a ball bearing 11, and, as above stated, is

Carried by a hub or sleeve 15' journaled in a bearing bracket 16,,is a friction clutch 'member 17. Its hub 15 is fixed to the shaft 9, and has a ball bearing support 18 on the bracket -16.

19. It will be understood that splines are placed on the shafts whereby the operating devicemay be moved up and down the sew- 1 ing head, and conveyer adjusted, as shown in my aforesaid application, No. 536,765.
This engagement of members 17 and 21 takes place when the operator passes the treadle sufficiently to raise the member 14- 15 and with it the shaft a sufficient height.
. It will be seen, therefore, by this construction that when the operator depresses the treadle, he will first cause the frictional engagement of pulley 8 and conveyer clutch friction 14, thus driving shaft 9, and operating the conveyer to carry the sacksthereon toward the sewing mechanism.
When the sewing mechanism is; reached by the bag in its movement, increased pressure on the treadle will cause engagement of members 17 and 21 of the upper clutch mechanism, and thus rotate the upper shaft andndrive the sewing mechanisirmthrough the belt wheel 20. The movable clutch mem- 3 bers return to normal position by gravity.
The swinging lever 13 carries, 'a suitable brakeshoe, as shown in Fig. 2, which moves into engagement with the friction clutch member 14 when theclutch parts are separated.
' While I have shown and described my invention, and primarily have designed it for use in connection with the successive bringing into operation of the conveyer and 40 thesewing mechanism of a filled bag sewing apparatus, it will be understood that so far as the mechanical movements set forth are applicable to other uses, the invention is not limited to this particular type of apparatus.

In an apparatus for sewing filled bags including a conveyer and a sewing mechanlsm, a vertical conveyer operating shaft having a friction clutch member fixed thereon, a loose clutch pulley thereon, a controlling lever for moving the clutch pulley into operative engagement with the friction clutch member and thereby transmitting motion from the loose pulley to the. conveyer shaft, asecond friction clutchmemher on the upper end of the conveyer shaft,
a second vertical shaft above, the conveyer shaft and having on its lower end a friction clutch member to be engaged by the second friction clutch member on the lower shaft, in the operation of the controlling lever to raise the lower vertical shaft.

The herein described dual drive mechanism comprising a lower vertical shaft and an upper vertical shaft, clutch members re- 5 spectively carried by the upper end of the lower shaft, and the lower end of the upper shaft, a loose driven pulley carried by the lower shaft, a friction clutch member fixed tothe lower shaft, and a controlling mem- 11o be'r adapted in its initial movement to'move pulley'into engagement with the fixed 'friction' clutch on the lower shaft, thereby rotating the shaft, and the further movement raising-the shaft to cause the upper friction member to engage with and transmit power to the upper vertical shaft.

In an apparatus' for sewing the ooming mechanism, two driven shafts, cooperating clutch members for connecting the shafts, one of said shafts being movable longitudinally for causing said clutch members to be engaged, a second clutch member fixed on said movable shaft, a clutch pulley and a controlling member for engaging the clutch pulley to move it into engagement with said second fixed clutch member the combination of sewing mechanism and a- 3 conveyer, a 'driven member for operating the conveyer, a driven member for operating the sewing mechanism, a clutch mechanism between the two driven members, a clutch device for operating the first driven member, and a controlling lever in the movement of which the firstdriven member is operated to drive the conveyer, and in the further movement of which the clutch between the two driven members is operated to drive the sewing mechanism.

In an apparatus for sewing filled sacks, a driven member provided with a clutch, a conveyer operated by said driven member, a controlling lever for operating the clutch to impart motion to said driven member, a second driven member, a sewing member operated by said second driven member, clutch members between the two driven members, the further movement of the controlling lever beyond that necessary to operate the first driven member moving said first driven member with its clutches to 1rgause the clutching of the two driven memers.
11. In a filled bag sewing apparatus, a sewing mechanism, and a conveyer, a plurality of vertically arranged shafts for driving said sewing mechanism and conveyer, a device under control of the operator for driving" said conveyer, and means under the control of the operator for joining said,
shafts together whereby they may be operated as a single shaft to simultaneously drive said sewing machine and conveyer 12. In a filled bag sewing apparatus, a sewing mechanism, a conveyer, a support for the conveyer, and devices for driving the sewing mechanism and conveyer including a plurality of clutches arranged one above' the other, driving connections between one of the clutches and the sewing mechanism, and between the other clutch and the conveyer, and a single controlling means for operating first one clutch and then the other.

tween one of the clutches, and the sewing mechanism and between the other clutch and the conveyer, and a single controlling means for operating said clutches in succession, whereby the conveyer may be operated while the sewing mechanism is idle.
14. In a filled bag sewing apparatus, a sewing mechanism, a conveyer, a support for the conveyer, and devices for driving the sewing mechanism and conveyer includ ing a plurality of clutches arranged one above the other, driving connections between one of the clutches and the sewing mechanism, and between the other clutch and the conveyer, said clutches being so constructed as to be normally held open by gravity, and a single controlling means for operating first one clutch and then the other.

In a filled bag sewing apparatus, a sewing mechanism, a conveyer, and means for operating said sewing mechanism and conveyer, including a plurality of shafts arranged one above the other, a plurality of clutches, one of which may be operated for connecting the shafts, and the other of which may be operated for driving one of said shafts, devices for connecting one of said shafts to the sewing mechanism, and devices for connecting the other shaft to the conveyer.
16. In a filled bag sewing apparatus, a
