FENCE-POST.
esser-i Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Au a, 1917.
Application filed December 4, 1916. Serial No. 134,993.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL O. SCl-IILLING, a
[citizen of the United States, residing at -.Ho'ricon, in the county of Dodge and State -fence post of the metal type and the prin be easily inoved to a position totighten': the
"cipal object of the invention is to provide an improved means for engaging line wires "to tighten the wires and hold the same in tight f e 'gagement with the post.
i construe ',;the fastening device that it may wires ,or 'release themthus permittingthe .Wir'esito be securely but releasably held in place. i
. Another object of the invention to so "i -"construct this wire fastener that all of the .wir
of'gthe wires tightened by a single V opera ion.
Another object of the invention is to so constructthis-post and wire fastener that the 1 wire fastener the wires from that;
ires ill not beigdamaged and therefore alte it unnecessary to spl ce the wires in c as the, line of the fence is changed and 30 the posts bro ghtfat di'fi'e nt points along which I they originally occupied.
Anotherobject of l the invention is to provide a'post and wi'r fastener which will be ry siinple inconstiuction but atthe same time i'fery strong and durable and serviceii'1e.;. 5? Thi sii'ivertti'd 'is illustrated in the accomi ianyiingf draiwing wherein itFiigire 1 i sa vievi showing the improved "ii-istiii elevation yith the wires connected iihe-rewitli,
Fig.2 is a view showing the improved post in vertical section with-the wire fastener in elevation," I v I. Fig. 3 isa tia 'isvcrse sectional view through the post and wire fastener before is turned to the operative pothe fastener sition, and;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 W1illl the turned'to an operative position.
(er/ob ect of the invention ,is to. so"
"-Y:may ;be.'secured by the single device The post 10 may:v be cast or formed of sheetmetal and, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 2, is hollow and terminates at its lower end in a penetrating point 11 which permits the post to be easily driven into the ground. The fence wires 12am passed through the slots 13 in the post and when first put in place will extend trans r versely throughthe post as shown in Fig. 3. 'l he securing bar or rod 14 for the wires is.
positioned in the post between the wires 12 and the slotted portion of the post as shown in Fig. 3 and is provided with lugs 15 having notches formed therein to receive the wires when the securing rod or bar is turned from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4. As this securing 19d is turned,.the lngs'or arms 15 by engaging the wires will force these wires to assume the bent position of Fig. 4 and the wires will thus be held in the stretched and tightened condition, it beingof course understood that the wires had previously been tightened by some other device. The fact that the bar 14- is rectangular in cross section will prevent the bar from having a tendency to turn and resume the position shown in Fig. 3 and therefore the wires will not be released until so desired, at. which time, the securing bar will be turned by a suitable wrench'thus releasing the wires. It will thus be seen that by means of this improved post and securing device, the, wires can be securely held in engagement with the post and further held tightly stretched without it being necessary to damage the wires. v
What is claimed is 1. A fence post comprising a hollotv body provided withtransversely extending slots to receive fence wires extending through the post, and a securing bar rectangular in cross section and extending into the hollow body through the slotted portion thereof and pro vided with lugs having notches formed therein, the lugs engaging the wires passing through the post with the wires seated in the notches when the securing bar is turned in the post from an inoperative to an operati ve position. i
2. A fence post comprising "a hollow body provided with transversely extending slots to receive fence wires extending through the post, and :1 securing bar extending into the In testimony whereof I niiix my signature hollow )ost throlwh the slotted iortion in n'esenco of two witnesses.
