Description

CLARENCE E. YOUNT, OF HAW'ARDEN, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA.
nennen.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
Application lcd December 29, 1913.5. Serial No. 69,257.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CLARENCE E. YOUNT,
l a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Hawarden, Province of Sas-v have invented new andkatchewan, Canada, useful Improvements in Needles, the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to needles, and particularly to sewing machine needles; and it has for its primary object the provision cf a needle of this character which will be constructed so as to simplify the operation of threading the saine and for eliniinatinthe necessity of having to extend the thread directly into the eye and transversely of the shank `of the needle.
Another object of the invention is the rovision of aneedle of this character w ich will be constructed so as to positively prevent the accidental disengagement of the thread from the eye or any working of the eye into the guideway formed in the shank of the needle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a needle of this character wherein the entrance guide for the thread will be positioned at such point on the shank so that when the needle is used upon relatively heavy work the guide will serve as a brace to strengthen the needle and prevent the shank from being accidentally separated from the stock.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as 4will be hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of the needle, showing the application of the needle in the ordinary foot; and
Fig. -2 is a longitudinal section through the needle.
rlhe needle as herein designed is provided with any suitable well known form of stock or attaching portion l which is adapted to be connected in the customary manner with the foot 2 and to be secured in place thereto by means of a 'fastening screw 3. From the stock l extends a shank l pointed at its lower end, as at 5, and provided with an eye 6 of substantially elliptical forni.y
The said shank 4t is split longitudinally to form a thread guide 7 having a lower curved branch 8 provided with a lateral portion 9 which cpens directly into the eye of which 6 at one side thereof and in such manner that-the portion l0 of the eye forms a guard to prevent the thread after it is 'extended through, the eye from being accidentally drawn into the portion 9 and into the guide 7. rlhe needle as thus ldesigned will be found extremely desirable for use by persons having poor eye sight and under ordinary Vconditions lits use will result in a material saving of labor, particularly when such materials as silk or the like are to be used by the needle. rlhe shank at its point of juncture with the stock l. is provided with a pair oflugs ll, 1l which extends approximately at an angle of 90 to the axis of the shank and which are arranged relatively so as to form. aninitial guideway l2 which opens at 13 into the main longitudinal guide 7. The inner surfaces of the lugs 1l, l1 are slightly curved longitudinally along their inner surfaces so that at their outer ends the surfaces collectively present a relatively large flared mouth by means of which the thread may be readily extended into the main guide 7. At 14C, the inner surfaces of the lugs 1l, 1l approximately come togetherso that the upper lug forms a brace for the lower lu and both lugs forni a brace for the shank o lthe needle when the needle is used upon heavy fabric and the needle penetrates the fabric to -a point where it is .brought to bear against the under lug ll.
llfhen threading the needle the terminal of the thread is placed in a horizontal p'osition and held between the fingers. of thel hand 4of the operator and pressure in a horizontal direction is brought against thc thread to cause the same to enter between the lugs 1l, 11 andlnally become positioned at the axial center of the shank 4. Pressure in a downward direction is then applied against the thread and finally the thread is brought to a position Where it will enter the lateral branch 9 of the portion 8 and it may be then made to freely enter the eye 6.
l claimz- A il sewing machine needle provided with an eye and also provided with a longitudinal guide way forming a split in the needle and extending from the eye tov a point spaced from the eye and at one side of the needle, so that a spring portion is formed between the split. eye, and the upper end of the split, the needle being provided with a laterally extending lug at a point coincident with the
