To all whom t may concern: n
NARo, a subject of the Kingof-GreatBritain, and resident of 493 Ontario street east, 5 in the cityV of Montreal, Province'ofl Quebec,
in the Dominion of Canada, havelnvented certain new and usefulvmprovements in Step-Ladders; and l do hereby declarethat the followingisa full, clear, and exact description ofthe same. j
' The-invention relates to improvements -in step ladders, as described in the present specification; and illustrated inthe accom-1 panying drawings that forml part of the same; v 4 l' The invention consists essentially of the novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby an additional frame folding to the main frame 'forms a support Vin the open position'of the ladder for the utensils of the worker.
The objects of the invention are to devise a convenient form of step ladder that will be particularly useful to cleaners and workmen generally, to insure safety for the personengaged at work, and' gene'rallyto provide a simple and durable ladder that-willv meet all the requirements yas furnished by a strong and steady scaffolding or stand.
the ladder in its open position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical side sectional view of the ladder in its collapsed position.
Fig. 4 is a detail showing a preferred form of connection between the supporting rear frames and the main ladder frame.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a preferred form.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 are the steps extending between and secured to the uprights 2, said steps extending slightly beyond the front edges of said uprights 2, and said uprights at their upper ends and 1n the rear thereof having the recesses forming the shoulders 3.
4 are the rear props joined adjacent t-o the lower end by the broad rail 6, said props at the extreme upper end thereof fitting un. l
i der the shoulders 3 and joined to the up- Y. rights 2 by the link hinges 7, said links 7 being pivotally mounted over the plates 8 by the pivots 9, which extend through said' In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective'r plates into theA uprights, said `plates v8 extend- Be it known that L-NICOLA MARIA MARI- ing upwardly kand in the open position of the ladder meeting at their upper ends and inner edges, the 4latter being liush with the lnn'er edges of theuprights and-props, the latter` also i i theladder. Y. Y i
lIt willbe seen that the props and up` rights are secured together by flexible 'hinges and that the plates and the said up# rights andprops meet in the open position of the ladder,in order toprevent' the ladder spreading. `The spreading ofthe ladder is also provided' 'against` by the bar hooks 10 secured tothe uprights 42 and fasteninglinto the'eyes l10n thepropjs 4.A
412 are the sidera'ils of the platform'supvportinngframeat the rear joined together at n the lower end by the cross rail 13 into whichthe `pivots 14 extendA through tothe props 4 immediately'above the rail 6. The lower .endsof the side rails 12 are meeting in theV open" position of preferably curved as. shown in Fig. 4 and l turning said rails 12 rearwardly the rail 13 binds onv the rail 6 making the latter a sup-` port for the rails 12 and limiting the rearward movement of the rails 12. v
Intermediate of the height of the rails 12 at the beginning of the reduced upper ends thepcross rail 15 joins thesaid rails 12 and adjacent to the extreme upper end they are joined by the cross rail 16. The open frame formed by the side rails 12 and cross rails 13, 1 5 and 16 folds closely to the props 4 and uprights 2, and at the upper end extends considerably above the ladder.
17 is a platform which is equivalent tothe ltop step of the ladder and is pivotally secured to the uprights 2 midway between the upper step and the extreme topends of said uprights, .said latform extending rearwardly considera ly beyond therear props 4 and therebetween and having at the under extending downwardly from the under side l l of the platform 17.
21 is a shelf hinged at the upper crossrailV i I 16 and folding upwardly and outwardly therefrom and lsupported by the brackets 22,
the latter being' pivotally secured on the said rails 12in order ytoy fold yinwardly inf the collapsed position of theisaidA shelf.
23 is a hook secured to the rails 12 and fastening into the eye 24: on the shelf 21," so" as to fasten said shelf securely in its col` lapsed" position.
