2 SHEETSSHEET 2- i a k i 1 anveml'oz Edward Larson 9&1, ms [mite 0142?":
EDWARD ianson, on HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD Lassen, a citizen of the United States, and residing at ,Hartford, in the county of Hartford and 4 State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Spring- Counterba'lance Devices for Window-Sashes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spring counterbalance devices for window sashes, and the object thereof is to provide improved devices of this class whereby the sashes are normally balanced without the use of weights, and whereby said sashes may be raised and lowered and maintained in any desired position and'both sashes closed 'whenever necessary, the sashes being manipulated I by hand.
i The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the'accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters incach of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the window frame provided with improved spring counter-balanced devices v Fig. 2 an inside SBCElOI1&l-:-Vl8W of the top portion of the Window frame; showing the sashes and my improvement, thesashes be ing in a closed position;
Fig. 3 a sectional plan view of one end portion of the construction shown in Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale and showing the parts in a different position; g
Fig. 4 a section on the line 4-4. of Fig.3; and,
Fig. 5 a section on'theline 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawing forming part of thisspecification, I have shown a window frame, or that part thereof in which the sashes are mounted, and said frame, as shown, comprises two similar vertical side members a and a horizontal top member 6, and mounted in said frame are the usual top sash o and bottom sash cl.
. The top frame member is extended at both sides of the frame as shown at 6 and the side members a are mortised into the. top

frame member as shown at a and, in the practice of my invention, I mount on the opposite end portions of the top frame member 6 spring drum attachments 6, comprising base plates e on the outer end portions of which are mounted spring drums 6 on each OfWlllCh is Wound a metal strap The base plates 6 of the spring drumattachments e are also provided adjacent to their inner ends with transverse reinforcing securing the spring drum devices e to' the top member Z) of the window frame.
The said spring drum devices c are also provided with web or spider. frames 71. in which the spring drums e are mounted and i which serve as additional bearings or su ports for the central spindles e of said spring drums, and the spindles e" are provided with sleeves e integral with, or se-' cured to,the base plates o and the springs e of said drums are secured to said sleeves and to the drum casings at each end, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
2 The metal straps f are provided at their free ends with pulleys z, and passed. around said pulleys are cords, j and these cords, or the-separate parts thereof, are passed over the pulleys e of the s ring drum devices 6,
and down through ho es la in the top plate or member 6 of the window frame, and also in the base plate-e of'the spring drum devices e, and one end portion 7" of one of the other end portion 7' to the top sash at one side'of the window or window frame,
while'the ends 7' and j of the other cord y are correspondingly secured to the bottom and top'sashes at the opposite side of thewindow. The connection vofthe ends j of these cords'with the bottom sash are shown at m in Fig. 2, and it will be understood that y y 95. the cords j is secured to the bottom sash and ing and lowering of the sashes by e sli suitable locking devices they bewith the top sash in the some r The position of the hoe 1 and 2 is their normal post n with both sashes closed, and if the bottom sash be raised, the pulleys i will move n opposite directions towarc the spring; in devices c with which they connected by the straps f, and if it is desired to lower top sash with the bottom sash op n, sash is moved downwardly and he pulleys 2' again move in opposite directions, but a direction the reverse of and from the toregoli description cm construction shown, it will be apparent that both sashes may be manipulated ony de-' sired manner, either for or cl the same, and it will be understood that t strength or capacity of the sp dri c" may be so regulated to permit oi. the r c exertion, or application of power by hand, in the manner of raising and loweri g sashes counter-balanced by weights, and s l ashes, or the counter-balancing devices may regulated us to permit the sashes to stand at any desired point oi? adiustn cut, or
main in a, closed position and the sashes for holding them position of adjustment, and for loci, in a closed position.
It will also be understood that the strength of the spring drums e be adjusted. or regulated to window sashes of any weight, and my invention is not limited to any psiticular form or construction of so I drum or drums, nor to any pa :ulor n us or or for mounting the pulleys c in connection with or in proximity to said drums, and the spring drum devices 0 may be constructed or formed in any desired manner, and cords or cables may be substituted the j, and changes in and modifications of these and other features of construction herein described may be made, within the cope of the appended claims without depur from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its ad: vantages,
The top plate or member 3) 0 th window frameis provided, adjacent to each of the spring drum attachments c, with removable panels 07, forming pockets or apertures 7L2 through which the spring druinattachments e may be inserted or passed and, in the construction shown, the panels n are held in place by screws 11," which engage theonds said panels and the corres 'ionding ends of the pockets or apertures, .7 said poo ets or apertures are des, permit 0; and to facilitate the mountij' to. e drum devices 6 in which ope I: It
are passed rough the pockets or uphich operation the outer end portions oi base plates 0 engage the headed screws or devices 9 after which the bolts g are passed upwardly through the top portion of the window frame and through the inner end portions of the plate. c and nuts 9 applied to said bolts for securing the spring druni devices in position, and it will be unlerstood that, if at any time, the drum cevices 6 should need repair they may be taken out by reversing the above tion.
will be understood that the form 01: yolreshoped hearings or supports 6 will the pulleys c are mounted facilitates the op ration of the apparatus and prevents the tune from getting out of order by reason o he fact that the said hearings or re closed at the top and the cords or cables cannot jump out of said hearings or supor become detached therefrom in. any
bu readily understood If it is desired to place my improved sash counter-balancing rotus 1n position, in the firstinstence,
while the Window frames are being formed 1.
or constructed, the method of procedure would, of course, be different, and the etc or apertures 14, would beof no use in this operation. I
ving fully described my invention, wt 1' claim as new and desire to secure by T tters Potent, isz- 1. The herein described means for counterbslancing window sashes comprising spring drum devices adapted to be mounted in the top portion of the window frame, flexible devices connected with and wound on seid spring drum devices, pulleys connected with suidflexible devices, other pulleys mounted in connection with the spring drum devices and other flexible devices adopted to be passed around the first named pulleys and over the lust named pulleys and downwardly and to be connected with the Window sashes.
2. The combination with a Window frame, of sash counter-balancing devices comprising spring drums mounted in the top portion of the Window frame, flexible devices connected with and Wound on said spring drums, pulleys connected with said flexible devices, other pulleys mounted in connectw J, n and slid outwardly into position,
nected with the Window sashes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscrlblng wltnesses thls 26th day of March, 1917.
