Specification of Letters Patent;
Application filed September 10, 1915. Serial No. 50,047.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. ANTHONY, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Devices for Gas- Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention relates to safety devices for gas stoves having separate burners or sets of burners, having each its individual gas connection and control. More essentially the invention relates to that type of gas stove having a burner or burners for heating an oven and also a separate broiler burner located within the chamber of the oven.
The object of my invention is to safeguard against explosions and also against overheating the stove which is not only a thing to be avoided but in itself might lead to an explosion.
As experience has demonstrated, where there are several burners or sets of burners, eachhaving its separate gas connection and control there is danger of explosion if one burner be lighted and gas be admitted to the other burner. For example, if the oven burners were lighted for heating the chamber of the oven and gas were admitted through the broiler burner, this would a1- most invariably lead to an explosion provided the oven door was closed as it naturally would be. If one should light both burners. simultaneously, those for heating the oven and the broiler burner, assuming the oven door to be closed, not only would the oven be excessively heated, which is injurious, but there might be such lack of air or oxygen at the broiler burner that th1s burner might go out, when gas'would es-' cape into the chamber of the oven and would eventually become ignited causing an explosion.
It is to avoid dangers of the kind to which I have referred and other difficulties which might arise that I have provided the safety device constituting my invention, and which consists essentially in a movable guard which will prevent gas from being admitted to more than one burner or set of burners at the same time thoughpermitting the admission of' gas to one or the other burner or set of burners as occasion may require. The invention also comprises other details of construction to which reference will also be made.

Referring to the drawings 1 represents the stove and 2 the side thereof to which the safety device is applied, or,
in other words, that side of the stove through which the gas connections extend which connect respectively with the burners for heating the oven of the stove and also with the broiler burner. Of these connections-5 represents those connecting with the oven burners (not shown) and 6 that connecting with the broiler burner (not shown). These connections consist of the usual gas inlet pipes through which gas is admitted from the common inlet or source of supply and of which the pipe connections 5 are controlled by gas cocks? and the pipe connections 6 by the gas cook 8. All of the gas cocks are provided with handles 9 which are'turn'edfor opening and closing the gas cocks in the usual manner. When closed the handles of the gascocks assume positions substantially parallel with the side of the stove and the gas cocks are opened by turning the handles outwardly. 1
Intimatelyassociated with the gas cocks 7 is a guard 10. This guard consists of a curved plate pivotally arranged to turn within brackets 11 fixed to the side of the stove. The relative disposition of this guard is such that it may be turned down over the handles of the gas cocks 7 when these cocks are closed, or upwardly away from the same.
the guard will prevent the gas cock 7 from being opened inasmuch as it lies within the paths of the handles of these cocks. When occupying its upturned position, however, the guard is turned away from the handles allowing the handles to be turned outwardly and the gas cocks opened in the usual manner. For turning the guard it is provided at one corner with a handle 12.
Connecting with the guard 10 is a bar 13 which extends upwardly and is provided at the top end thereof with an angularlyturned arm or guard 14 intimately associated with the gas cock 8. The bar 13 is pivotally secured to the guard whereby it may be raised and lowered and the arm or guard carried by it moved upwardly and downwardly as the guard 10 is moved up or down. The pivotal connection between the bar 13 and the guard is obtained by a slot 15 cut in the guard and crossed by a pin 16 to which the lower end of the bar is pivotally secured. The relation of the arm or guard 14 to the guard 10 and also to the handle of the gas cook 8 is such that when the guard is moved downwardly for preventing the opening of the gas cocks 7 the guard 1 1 will be moved downwardly to a position out of the way of the path of the handle of the cock 8, permitting of this handle being turned and the gas cock opened in the usual way. When, however, the guard 10 is turned upwardly, permitting of the opening of the gas cock 7 the guard 14 through the intermediary of the bar 13 will be moved or shifted upwardly to a position over the handle of the gas cook 8 and in the path of this handle, preventing its turning and the opening of the gas cock 8 controlled by it.
The lifting bar 13 is supported in its up and down movement by a. lever 17 which has a pivotal connection 18 with it, one end of H the lever projecting beyond the point of the pivotal connection 18 and slidably contained within'the housing 19 formed on the side of thestove. The lever 17 is pivotally secured to the stove by a pin 20 interposed between the wall of the stove and a strap 21 beneath which the lever extends. From the point of its pivotal connection with the stove the lever extends backward'toward the rear of a the stove, and the end 22 of the lever is made forked to loosely contain the handle 23 of a damper Qet. This damper controls the opening (not shown) leading into the flue or outlet passage 25 from the stove and in i only a movable support for guiding the bar 13'during the simultaneous operation of the respective, guards, but also to provide a 7 means for automatically opening and closing the damper. The damper is automatically opened by the lever when the guard 10 is occupying its downturned position and access is had only for admitting gas to the broiler burner, and is closed upon the reverse or upturned movement of the guard 10 when access is had only for admitting gas to the oven burners.
Vhile the lever and automatic control of the damper might be dispensed with and any simple expedient employed for loosely supporting and guiding the bar 13 during the operation of the guards, yet the automatic control of the damper is not only an advantage, but safeguards the proper operation of the stove.
While I have described an embodiment of 'my invention as applied tothe particular type of stove shown, yet it is obvious that other embodiments thereof might be employed as applied to different types of stoves without departing from the essential prin ciples of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patend of the United States V 1. The combination with a gas stove having an oven burner, a broiler burner, an outlet passage, a damper controlling said passage, gas connections leading respectively to said burners, and gas cocks arranged within each of said connections for con trolling the entry of gas to the burners, each of said gas cocks having a handle for opening and closing the cock, of a safety device comprising a primary guard arranged to turn into an operative position over the handle of the gas cock in the oven burner connection for preventing the turning thereof or into an inoperative position permitting of the turning thereof, a secondary guard pivotally connecting with said primary guard and movable therewith to 00- cupy a position admitting of the turning of the gas cook in said broiler burner connection when said primary guard is occupying an operative position, and movable into a position for preventing the turning of the handle of the gas cook in said broiler burner connection when said primary guard is occupying an inoperative position, and means for supporting said guards, the same comprising in part a lever connecting with said damper and movable with said primary guard to open said damper when said primary guard is occupying an operative position and to close said damper when said primary guard 1s occupying an inoperative po s1t1on.

connections leading to the respective burners, a gas cook within each of said connections for controlling the entry of gas to the burners, each of said gas cocks having a handle movable laterally for opening and closing the cock, a primary guard pivotally arranged to turn down over the handle of the gas cook controlling the entry of gas to the oven burner preventing the turning of said cock, or upwardly into an out-of-theway position permitting of the turning of said cook, a bar pivotally connected to said guard to extend upwardly therefrom and be movable thereby in reverse directions as the guard is moved between its upturned and downturned positions, a secondary guard carried by said bar and movable thereby into a position over the handle controlling the entry of gas to the broiler burner when the primary guard is occupying an upturned position or downwardly into an out-of-the- Copies of this patent may be obtained for way position, permitting of the turning of the handle of the cock controlling the entry of gas to the broiler burner when the primary guard is occupying a'downturned position, means for supporting said bar and guard carried by it whereby they may be reversely movable as aforesaid, means for pivotally supporting said primary guard, and a pivoted lever interposed between said bar and said damper and connecting respectively therewith whereby said damper may be controlled by the movement of said bar and occupy a position dependent upon the positions of said guards.
